Beggar Wolf: These enigmatic creatures followed us for much of our trip, waiting for us just at the edges of vision, sitting and watching as we studied other creatures of the wood.  While none would come close to us, they did make themselves visible in groups of two to ten individuals, quietly adjusting their radial eyes as they followed or observed us.  While this initial observation left many members of our group ill at ease, we found that they simply seemed to take a spectator’s approach to our presence.

‘HCF’ For The New Yorker

Illustration I did for a review of AMC’s Halt and Catch Fire, about hackers in the 80′s technology boom. HCF is old computer command which sends the code into an inescapable loop forcing you to either shut down or let it overheat, kind of a metaphor for the times, so I of course decided to show them as the program and have them glitching out in pixels.

Day 2: Centaur

Ogura’s usual work was bijinga: paintings of beautiful women. This self-portrait is pretty uncharacteristic of her style.

The Japan Times says:

This emphasis on the idealized Japanese female reminds us that nihonga, as with so many areas of Japanese culture, was very much a man’s world. It is surprising, therefore, that even though Ogura was the first woman to be accepted into the Nihon Bijutsu-in, in 1932, most of her works share this fixation with the female form.

Moreover, there are few male figures in her paintings. Those males that are either have their back turned, such as the foreign priest in “A Joyous Baptism” (1936), occupy the background, as in “My Family” (1959), or are androgynous spiritual beings, as in “Bodhisattva in Motion” (1968). Indeed, one painting I initially took to be a frank frontal view of a short-haired man turned out to be a 1962 self-portrait!
