Just got the news that the most senior in our residency decided to quit. For circumstances beyond his control, he is now in his 5th year in the department then one day he woke up and that's the only thing set in his mind.
That scared me, to stay for that long and just abandon it like you haven't given your effort, sweat, and tears on that training/job for the past, hello? Five years! But I admire his courage for doing that, perhaps he felt like whatever he is doing does not serve him anymore and does not contribute to his growth as a person, or his career and he just cut it out of his life before it will exhaust him.
Which then brought me to my quitting ideations, ever since 3rd month of residency I wanted to quit already, because of an issue that was blown up into something big and everyone somehow got involved that I had to write a letter of explanation, and breaking down in front of everybody in the residents room, and in front of that junior consultant who made me a bait for her gambiting. I broke down for weeks. Core memory event right there. For some dumb reason I stayed. I loved working with my other senior friends, I loved the interaction I have with patients, I loved the place, and I took pride to belong. (Actually, I was scared to go back in my hometown and be a disappointment to everybody who supported me in my journey all the while I haven't gotten any salary YET from that hospital) Everyday thereafter was a journey to prove myself that I wasn't the person they judged me to be based on my psychological exams. That fucked me up. To be judged based on the things I wrote there.
Even when things got okay somehow, it seems like I am becoming the boy who cried wolf to my boyfriend's eyes because everyday was like "mag quit na ko, ayaw ko na" and still be there the next day doing my shit like I just did not have a panic attack the night before that. Even considered speaking up about it to my seniors but I have this thing with proving myself and having tough persona in the department.
It was tough being the only legit first year doing admin work because my batchmate allegedly is bad with computer stuff and half the year she was gone for a training and basically, I was the only one doing the first year stuff (nothing new, felt like that even when she was there anyway). Wanted to get out of there so bad, I talked to a friend doing PGIship in a davao hospital to ask about psych residency there, but found out I have to do first year all over again if I wanna transfer, which sucks because I don't want to do that shit for another year (but I'm still seriously considering even when I'm halfway thru 2nd year and just done with my training in military) but it will also be sad to leave the work friends I made along the way who made residency life so much easier. Letting go seems like something out of my niche jud HAHA or maybe staying in a traumatic environment is something is my learned helplessness kicking in (my childhood saying "you're welcome" in the background)
I did not have my salary until November of that year which really broke me because I can't even do the things that make me happy or eat the foods that will rejuvenate my spirit. Which got me dependent on my boyfriend A LOT. He was like basically taking care of a kid, me, the whiny-angry-irritable-needs-comforting-a-lot kid. Maybe that's why he got tired of me and then the self-pity kicked in and I was just lost and autopilot was on. my patients going back to being psychotic like I am close to being one or was one. (Disoriented? Hearing voices? Wanted to jump off the seventh floor while interviewing an ongoing referral? Yup, that me.)
I'm staring at everything that happened for the past year and so and it kind of made me glad I survived that shit. I remember jokingly voicing out everyday I wanted to quit whenever I am in the residency room and one time I got super late for two consecutive days (when I found out my boyf was cheating on me) with swollen eyes and all. The second day, my seniors clapped when I entered the residents room and gave me man a small hug congratulating me for not giving in to my quitting ideations. Which was comforting even when they did not know the personal stuff I was going through. That gave me the energy to face my patients for that day. Rhose little inside jokes with them "see u tomorrow... I guess?" "Congrats, di tayo nag quit today" "see you in hell" "those kind of humor we get to do made somehow my life a little lighter. To know we are all in the same fucked up hell of a training and still staying for the sake of taking care of other people and proving people that we are capable of the things they thought we can't do.
My residency is bittersweet. I stayed there for a stupid reason-I want to have a proper and not LDR kind of a relationship with someone I was just starting to know. Now, I'm staying there because I want to help people I am just starting to know and want to know about.
What do I know? I'm barely just scratching the surface. I barely just started 2nd year. I hope I don't lose the tiny spark I have. The fact that I'm still afraid of losing that means I still want to continue doing this despite how exhausting this thing is.
being the pawn for accompanying a patient that MIGHT escape during a procedure done outside our hospital... it's kinda giving me scared vibes cuz like who do u think will run faster???? Me, a sedentary lifestyle girly whose last cardio sesh was months ago OR a military person. Like... girl
approx. 4 months more and I'm done with first year of residency WTF guess you have to have (+) quitting ideation everyday for you to survive hahahaha
Perooooo parang gusto ko lumipat ng institution 👀
First time I got to attend a scientific meeting of mostly psych residents all over the ph. I learned a lot and had an insight how different institutions utilize their resources when prescribing medications or how they approach clinical cases. I never got hungry the whole day too.
I was from duty and had to sit in this cozy auditorium with this very ergonomic chair, which was so tempting for me to fall asleep into.
My westernizedt dinner cuz I didn't get rice and thought I could go for another round but i got so full jud!!! I also got to meet my classmates during Normality Lectures at the other table and it was so nice to finally meet them and talk to them. "Akala namin tahimik ka, tahimik ka kasi sa zoom". Lmao I'm tahimik during zoom meets cuz I just don't know shit. Hahahahahaha
Me and my v supportive senior during games. Which was the initial tequila shot after we lost. Apparently for all the games this evening, penalty is tequila shot. Had to head back to our table and consultants with a tequila bottle in hand were doing rounds and giving us shots back to back to back, and we, as being indoctrinated by the military could not say no esp to seniors/consultants.
For the last game, our assistant training officer tapped me and was like, you join this one. 😭💀 So i did. 😬👍 Apparently, it was quiz bee of psychopharmacology with 5k cash prize. 🏆 it would have been ez pz not until u have to fight for the tambourine as a "buzzer" with the other 9 contestants. HAHAHAHAHA and still the tequila shot is the penalty so I HAD TO FIGHT FOR MY LIFE not to go home batshit drunk. In the end I ended up at second place with a book as a price and a bruise. I rly did fight for it. I know most of the answers and I realized, DAMN i am not dumb pala.
Tequila pa more
A patient that was handed over was NOT properly endorsed and now my senior on duty called me to inform that it seems like "my" patient had a seizure, asked me abt their meds, history, neuro PE... and I don't even know what to say and I know it is so dumb of me to just say "idk cuz they were not properly endorsed, i thought continue meds then discharge"
ohmygod like why do u have concerns at 10 PM about something we can talk about tomorrow. Haynako hahahaha but also glad I didn't fall asleep yet so I can give pain reliever to someone in pain at half past midnight. Lmao As what our training officer said, you are expected not to sleep on duty but damn how can I also not. 💀🤭
24-hr duty again and it's raining and it's cold but it doesn't mean I could not get iced coffee hahaha
funny how my last post here was about me doubting myself and here I am now 7 months into residency after doing moonlighting in hospitals as a GP from APE stints, 24 hr OPDs, as far as 120 hrs per week of ward/er shifts.
I know so much now and I am yet to learn so much more.
Huzzah! Just me after doing patient rounds as an "uncomitted" resident using my white coat with another hospital's logo on it 😝
Caught between im responsible for my patients but im not responsible for their actions like cmoooon the number of times i told u not to violate ward rules, and it's me who will be questioned by consultants
Developmental Milestones
There's really a point in your life where you compare your own milestones with other people's, huh? I thought I was over the fact that I am a twenty-four year old postgraduate intern who still lives off my parents' money until I went out for a run and marvelled at the two-storey house of our neighbor. A lot of things went rushing in my head like: 1) Wow, I really haven't been outside for so long! 2) They used to have a humble abode and now rhey are rich rich, 3) They must have a really comfy life now thanks to their kids... Then it hit me! My mom could've had a really comfy life by now if she hadn't spent the last four yeats toiling for my post-graduate education. So there goes the guilt of being an unemployed "adult" as I was finishing my morning run. Hahaha! Imagine going out for ~*mental clarity*~ then coming back home questioning your life decisions.
It's a bummer, I know, and this pandemic has done nothing but amplify the self-doubt and impostor syndrome that's been looming around since med school. Now, even after finishing four long years of medical school, I can't even feel like I'm a doctor :( but, what can I do? We're stuck with doing things online for now and I'm fine with that cuz it's better than having risk of getting covid-19. It really makes me second guess the path I took. If i didn't study to become a doctor, I might be helping my family by now instead of being a bum. Then again, what can I do? I can't think of anything else I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
Sometimes, it's easy to dismiss all the things you have achieved in life because of the situation at hand, but it's noteworthy that not a lot of people have gone through what you have gone through. Even if the milestones you're stepping on seems bland to you, it reflects the green in other people's eyes.

An everyday reminder
WAIT DID I TELL U ABOUT THAT TIME I FELT PROUD OF MYSELF FOR DOING AN ASSIGBMENT BECAUSE IF NOT THEN HERE IT ISSSSS........
ambot ngano di big deal sa akoa ang graduation ceremony hahaha if it means bragging rights then I'd opt for the oathtaking one. Anyways, pasabta ko ninyo ngano sya importante. i might just change my mind.
I forgot what day of quarantine it is. However, what I do know is that we would have finished our Pediatrics rotation in Bohol by now and would be currently on our 3rd day in Internal Medicine rotation. For the past few weeks, I have been looking forward to do IM in Bohol because from what I've heard, you can really hone your practical skills there. They said it's really exhausting but I was excited nonetheless. As much as I wanted to, this pandemic is taking a toll on everyone and I am quite afraid that it will put a strain on my Pediatrics and Internal Medicine knowledge. I can't even concentrate to study in the comfort of my dormitory. All I ever had for these past few weeks are anxieties mainly due to *sigh* uncertainties.
Me tryna read the baby Harrison's book 😆🤭
After what seems like an eternity of waiting for our school to pull us out of hospital duty, they finally decided today to grant us so. I left the hospital relieved that I dont have to report this afternoon but most especially relieved that I can finally quarantine myself at home, away from everyone and everywhere we could possibly get the covid-19 from. I'm now sitting on the floor of my small dormitory, quite hesitant to start doing my laundry when our resident (I actually learned a lot from, plus, she is so kind) texted me. I can't deny it really meant a lot to me, I am overjoyed.
