Chelsea Clinton Gets High-Profile Inaugural Role - Directing the National Day of Service.
"There is no more fitting way to mark a presidential inauguration than a day of service," Clinton said in a statement sent to Yahoo! Shine. "Coming together as a country to strengthen our communities has always been part of the American spirit. I am deeply grateful that President Obama and his administration have put service at the center of the Inauguration weekend and I am proud to be part of a nation-wide service effort, honoring the service and legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and building a brighter future for all of us."
Politics aside, community service has always played a major part in her life, Clinton said. "When I was growing up, my parents and grandparents taught me that engaging in service, helping our neighbors and building strong communities are all part of being a good citizen and a good person," Clinton wrote in an essay for CNN on Tuesday. "When we moved to Washington, service remained an important part of my life. In high school, I helped head the service club, and in college, I volunteered as an America Reads tutor and in the art therapy room at the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital in California. I loved talking to my grandmothers about my volunteer work, and I agreed with them: I received more than I could ever possibly give."
Saturday's event will have seven themes of service: community resilience, economic development, education, environment, faith, health, and veterans and military families.
"Nineteen years ago, my father proudly signed the bill making Martin Luther King Day a time dedicated to serving others," Clinton told CNN. "As we think about the future of our communities and our country, we each have the ability and the responsibility to participate."
JUST ONE!
Our chalenge to all Champlain College upperclassmen is to do JUST ONE community service event of their choice...
Today is a great opportunity. All day today (Monday) we will be providing you with materials to make blankets which will be donated to shelters in Hurricane Sandy damaged areas.
Stop by Fireside Lounge and help us make over 100 blankets!
Most important thing to do...
is register to vote. It doesnt matter if you agree with what Sen. Bernie Sanders said tonight at Champlain College or not. The point he was trying to make is we all have an important job. You can vote for any party, any candidate, and base it on what matters to you.
NEXT THURSDAY 130-3 IN THE HAUKE COURTYARD WE'LL BE THERE TO HELP YOU REGISTER AND VOTE IN THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION NEXT MONTH.
TELL A FRIEND. SPREAD THE WORD!
Whats more adorable than little kids in costume?! Come volunteer!
On Wednesday, Aug. 29 over 30 Champlain College students, ranging from first-years to seniors, gathered at Edmunds Elementary and Middle schools to welcome students back on their first day. They even got up at 7 a.m. to meet on campus! We truly have the best volunteers.
It was great to share the enthusiasm and memories of our first days of school. Students, parents, and teachers really appreciated the presence of college students, and I think it will be memorable for them as well.
Good luck in the 2012-2013 school year students K-8! We'll see you at various other volunteer opportunities at Edmunds this year!
Community Service Summer Launch Trips
We're incredibly excited to be hosting two community service summer launch trips this year for incoming first-year students!
Vermont Bike Tour will be from July 17-19 and will feature a day of biking in Burlington, and a day spent biking in Stowe. Students will get to experience what Vermont is all about while being active and making new friends.
Community Service in Montreal will be the following week, July 24-16. Students will get to experience Montreal, where Champlain has an abroad campus. Students will partake in various service projects over the course of two days while making friends and maybe learn pour parler du français.
Two student facilitators and the Center for Service staff will be there to answer any lingering questions about coming to Champlain in the fall. We can't wait!

"Don't be a wiener. Do JUST ONE!" @ChamplainColleg was a great success last Tuesday. We had 90 students fill out commitment cards to do JUST ONE service activity next year!
Thanks to everyone who came out. Good luck with finals this week and have a great summer!
Sincerely,

Students, faculty, staff and friends: The Center for Service began cooking community dinners at the COTS (Committee on Temporary Shelter) Family Shelters in December of 2011. Since then, a group of students cook at one of two COTS Family Shelters once a month. Frequent volunteer, first-year Nick Veazey expressed, "When I did my first COTS dinner I didn't know what to expect. But I honestly had a blast. COTS dinners give you a unique experience where you interact with the residents as you cook them a meal. The adults are extremely grateful and the kids are a riot too." Unfortunately, students and the residents at COTS do not have the best cooking materials to work with. They have a limited number of cookware and cooking utensils in each shelter, and they are not in very good condition because of frequent use and age. This is where you come in: We need any lightly used cookware that you don't use or have run out of room for in your kitchen so that we can gift it to the COTS Family Shelters. This will greatly help COTS residents make meals for their families throughout the summer months until Champlain students return in the fall and start providing monthly dinners again. "Better cookware means better food, and better food means better company," said Veazey.
