i cant stop thinking

stop promoting netflix’s 365 days

so a few friends and i watched the netflix film 365 days. you’ve probably heard it, it’s the film about the woman who gets kidnapped and told she won’t be allowed to leave until she falls in love with her kidnapper. hopefully, that premise already seems sickening to you, as i would have assumed was obvious, but nonetheless, i’ve seen several people i personally know, as well as many many people on social media recommend and treat this film positively, commemorating it for being forward-thinking and sexually positive. so i’m going to go into a  deep dive run-through of this film and discuss why those people are absolutely mistaken and are promoting a film that is not only horribly written, directed, and acted but is also full of sexual abuse masquerading as a sensual romance flick.

this is not an attack on the actors of the movie. i’ve noticed that both (maybe more so michele morrone) have gained quite a large fanbase as a result of the film’s popularity, and i’d like to say i don’t hold anythng against them. i’m sure they’ve lovely people, but the film they participated in is abhorrent and harmful.

please, if you find any of the topics listed below as triggering, please give this post and the movie a skip. if you’re one of the people currently obsessed with this movie, please just take a moment of your time to read this and consider that the media you are praising has some very, very harmful messages and just try to consider it critically for a second.

365 days follows polish executive laura who is kidnapped by italian mafia boss massimo and told she has a year to fall in love with him, if she doesn’t she is allowed to go, but she is not allowed to leave him until that time is up.

so, right off the bat this film will heavily feature a case of stockholm syndrome. for those who don’t know stockholm syndrome, according to healthline.com is “… a psychological response. It occurs when hostages or abuse victims bond with their captors or abusers.” it is believed to be “… a coping mechanism, or a way to help victims handle the trauma of a terrifying situation.”

i’m not an expert on the condition in any capacity, and don’t claim to be able to speak on it as psychological concept as a whole. however i would like to discuss the concept of a relationship foundation being a kidnapping in context of this film. laura is unable to walk away from massimo. she is unable to remove herself from association with this person and she tries to run away several times at the beginning of the movie. her inability to leave factors into her inability to consent in any degree to a mutual relationship and therefore mutual consent to sexual activity. her lack of choice is not sexy, it is textbook abuse. i don’t know how i can paint it any more simply, but the film portrays this “relationship” as a choice for laura to make, which it is not. she may be allowed free one day, but that is a whole year of captivity. i can’t grasp how someone can see that this is a woman who has been placed in a situation where she is a prisoner and sees anything that happens within those confines as sexy, let alone, at the bare minimum, consensual.

so that’s the foundation of the movie, which is enough to make me angry, but even more enraging is the way in which it’s dealt with by the characters, namely laura. more on that in a moment. 

so, after being told she won’t be able to leave for a year and getting her phone and laptop confiscated, laura is taken shopping, during which she momentarily seduces massmio (more on this in a moment), attempts to escape (and this) and i stopped and returned to massimo’s mansion where they have dinner. during this dinner, massimo expalins to laura that he wants her to teach him, “how to be gentle.” lets unpack this bit by bit, shall we:

a) the seduction: for a good portion of the film, laura is shown to understand that she is a prisoner and shows great resentment towards massimo for kidnapping her. but after a while, i realised this film had no intentions of handling a kidnapping in the way it should be - as a serious and traumatic crime. instead, laura decides she’s going to, on several occasions, seduce massimo with seemingly no intentions of actually sleeping with him - i draw this from the times she approaches him seductively, etc. and then walks away. personally, i think it’s incredibly offensive to paint a kidnapping victim this way, boiling something as horrifying and damaging as being made a prisoner to an occasion where she can just be sassy and flippant and playful, but i also understand that there is no one way to react “correctly” to something like this, so interpret that as you will.

b) the escapes: by this point, laura has attempted to escape several times, all of which have been met by rough intervention by massimo. The first two times, during the scene where she’s being told she’s been kidnapped, this rough, physical intervention includes massimo groping her breasts, pressing his body against her and grabbing her face. i don’t think i need to tell you that this is all sexual abuse. blatant, textbook sexual abuse. there is no two ways about it.

c) “how to be gentle”: in short, it was clear to me at this point that this was some ridiculous, abhorrent attempting at making a kidnapper appear sympathetic to the audience which is, again, textbook abuse. also, it’s stupid film making as well because at no point is it brought up again in a cinematic context, but i digress.

 so already we have:

1. a situation where she is physically unable to leave;

2. several instances of sexual and physical assault when she attempts to leave and/or fight back against her kidnapper;

not great, but it gets worse.

the issue of an inability to leave comes up again later on. during a scene in a hotel wherein, again, laura goes to seduce massimo and then decides to leave, the hotel room door is locked. she cannot leave. she asks to leave and in response, massimo restrains her to the bed while she is struggling and wriggling to get away, gropes and sexually assaults her in several ways and then brings in a prostitute to perform a sex act on him in front of her. after that, massimo says (threatens) he will have sex with laura (portrayed in a sexy “i’m gonna fuck you so hard” kind of way) while he’s pressed up against her. he assaults her again while she’s still restrained and while she is saying “please” and “i am begging you”. 

something to note here is that i do not know if those comments were meant to be taken in a way as she’s begging him to continue or begging him to stop - the film does not make that clear, but therein lies the issue. it is not clear if she consents. she never says no, but not saying no is not saying yes. i’d like to add here that this is all portrayed as a sexy, desirable scene and not portrayed as it should be - as sexual assault and attempted rape. the scene ends with laura being untied and ordered to dress up to go out (note: she dresses in a similar way to what the prostitute did. take that as you will.)

so, at this point, i’m exhausted. i’m angry, i’m upset, i’m drunk and i hate this film and everything it stands for.

the next scene is in a club with laura attempting to seduce and rile up massimo by dancing on another man. this man tries to rape laura which massimo freaks out (because only he’s allowed to do that) in a moment seen in several romances (ie, twilight) in which a woman is heroically rescued from one scum man by another. i get it. it’s a fantasy thing but also it’s boring, and overdone and i hate it. but again, i digress.

so now we’ve had:

1. a situation where she is physically unable to leave;

2. several instances of sexual assault when she attempts to leave and/or fight back against her kidnapper;

3. another incident of sexual assault and two of attempted rape. 

and there’s still an hour to go.

the next morning, laura, massimo and massimo’s mafia friend is on massmio’s yacht. there’s some stupid subplot hear about the trouble laura is causing amongst the family and their deals or whatever but at this point i do not care. laura gets angry at massmio for blaming her for her attempted rape (not by him, by the other guy - rest assured his attempted rape is never brought up) and during the argument, laura falls overboard and is rescued by massimo. when she comes to and after a small discussion between the two of which i don’t remember much, there is - and i shit you not - a five minute sex montage of them having aggressive sex on the boat. i’m not here to kink shame anyone who enjoys hardcore sex, but within the context of this film and the violence seen from massimo already, this montage is uncomfortable to say the least. i guess now laura is just okay with still being a prisoner and now it seems that she and massimo are on the same wavelength and happy or whatever. again, this is my problem with the way this victim of kidnapping, several instances of sexual assault and two cases of attempted rape is being portrayed. offensively, is the word for it.

the rest of the film spirals into this horribly written and acted mess of a romance movie, but i’m going to add it anyway just to round out how awful this movie is:

after a masked ball wherein someone threatens to kill laura, there’s another sex scene and after a declaration of love, massimo has laura sent back to warsaw with, from what i saw, no reason nor contact. so now this victim of kidnapping, sexual assault, attempted rape and sufferer from stockholm syndrome is cut off from someone she supposedly is in love with. any realistically written character would at this point be severely traumatised, but of course not, this is a fun romance film! 

so instead, she and her best friend go out drinking, laura meets her ex-boyfriend who follows her back to her apartment, and back again to save her from unwanted male attention is massimo. the two fight which ends in dubiously consented to sex and laura herself confesses her love for massimo. the two get engaged and head back to italy where he informs her she’s not allowed to have anyone except for her best friend at their wedding. her best friend is flown out, and there’s a glimmer of hope for me as she tries to convince laura that she’s “in a cage” and asks her to leave massimo, but this is brushed off because laura is pregnant and she decides she’s going to stay with massimo. 

then she, uh, dies? i don’t know, it’s stupid, i don’t care, but something happens, it’s a cliffhanger: i’ve heard there’s possibly going to be a sequel and that it’s a book series and she’s actually just kidnapped (again, but i doubt that kidnapping will be as sexy as this one !) but at this point i’m almost blackout drunk and i don’t care for anything anymore.

so, to draw a conclusion, this film is a portrayal of a kidnap, sexual assault, attempted rape victim who is cut off from her family, and paints her in a sexy, heavy romantic relationship with a violent, abusive kidnapper. this film romanticises abuse and stockholm syndrome and people are acting like it’s the new fucking pride and prejudice movie because both of them are attractive people.

please, please, please. if you have made it this far, please reblog and spread the word. my best hope is that people who are claiming this film is good are just blindly naive and ignorant to what abuse is. if you have anything to add, please do so.

if you enjoyed this film, i highly recommend you reevaluate why and if you still continue to defend this film, you are choosing to defend a film that, again is a portrayal of a kidnap, sexual assault, attempted rape victim who is cut off from her family, and paints her in a sexy, heavy romantic relationship with a violent, abusive kidnapper. i can’t put it more simply than that.

again this is not an attack on either of the actors nor on people who enjoy a more kinky sex life. it’s simply an explanation of why this film is harmful and horrendous to be promoted as a sex positive, good film. there are plenty of other kinky sex positive films out there! we can bring a positive like to less mainstream sex in a way that doesn’t involve coerced consent and abuse.

please spread the word that this film is deeply harmful to women who are survivors and women susceptible to this kind of disgusting romanticist of blatant abuse. i cannot stress this enough, please stop promoting this film.

Common signs that an autism resource is bad

Person-first language (”people with autism”) The autistic community are very vocal about preferring identity-first language (”autistic people”) over person-first language (”people with autism”) so use of person-first language in an autism resource shows a lack of contact with the autistic community/an unwillingness to listen to autistic people.

Mentions of a supposed cure for autism. There is no cure for autism and many of the proposed “cures” are both dangerous and abusive. Resources and organisations who try to sell you a cure are either knowingly scamming you or very misinformed about the reality of autism.

Advocacy for finding a cure for autism. The majority of the autistic community don’t want a cure for their autism - they want society to change so that autistic people can be accepted, respected and included as they are. Advocacy for finding a cure for autism shows a lack of contact with the autistic community/an unwillingness to listen to autistic people.

Functioning labels. Functioning labels (“severe autism” vs “mild autism”/”high-functioning” vs “low-functioning”) are at best useless and at worst harmful and the autistic community doesn’t support the use of them. Use of functioning labels in an autism resources shows a lack of contact with the autistic community and a lacking understanding of autism.

Autism Speaks. Autism Speaks is a very harmful organization which isn’t supported by the autistic community. Positive references to Autism Speaks/connections with Autism Speaks shows a lack of contact with the autistic community and an unwillingness to listen to autistic people. 

ABA. ABA (”Applied Behavior Analysis”) is an abusive therapy which isn’t supported by the autistic community. Positive references to ABA shows a lack of contact with the autistic community and an unwillingness to listen to autistic people.

Claims that vaccines cause autism. Vaccines don’t cause autism, this has been proved over and over by various independent studies. Claims that vaccines cause autism shows a lacking understanding of science/a lack of scientific objectivity.
