power series — telekinesis [ˌteləkiˈnēsis]
the ability to manipulate objects with one’s mind. those blessed with telekinetic abilities have the power to move and potentially fully manipulate that which surrounds them. if their mutation is honed, the user may develop the capability to lift and manipulate fellow beings, including themselves. expert users may even obtain the power of flight. despite its great advantages, the consequences of poorly trained telekinesis may be dire, and users are often plagued with accidental destruction of that which surrounds them before they properly train their ability.
shows and movies blow tf out of me when characters just allow people who they know are going to come back and try to kill them to live. mimi is not one of those people lol. if she thinks for a moment a person is going to become a threat to her or her family, she's eliminating them ( even if in the long run, it could cause other issues ). the only person she has left alive is her brother, eze, and that's for obvious reasons.

↬ OF MERMAIDS, MASQUERADES AND MAGIC.
scenarios inspired by various settings, encounters & magic tucked between pages, fashioned by the author. tw for drowning mentions.
+ feel free to change pronouns / roles !
MERMAIDS.
‘ beyond the winds and past the shores, strange magic lurks about. ’
‘ will you go to the lagoon with me ? it’s unsafe to go alone. ’
‘ they say a siren’s call alone can drown a man before she swallows him. ’
‘ quick ! cover your ears. ’
‘ what did you imagine as you heard the song ? ’
‘ i can feel a voice like claws sinking beneath my skin. ’
‘ one can pray to the ocean, but the waters answer in strange tongues. ’
‘ careful, or we’ll hit the reef. ’
‘ the sea-folk are flighty as their fins, and illusive as shimmering scales. ’
‘ i should like to find myself a sailor fit for a feast. ’
‘ sometimes i wish there was more than the endless waves. ’
‘ do you see that ? there, beneath the surface ? ’
‘ that’s no fish, and no woman either. ’
‘ what lies off the edge of the map ? ’
‘ the sea has monsters, but beauties too. ’
‘ i’ve heard that merfolk make bargains, and trade in the ocean’s magic. ’
‘ i’ve never seen a pearl like this one. ’
‘ the ship will go down if we don’t turn about ! ’
‘ what is that, out there on the rocks ? ’
‘ won’t you listen to my song ? ’
‘ mermaids love shiny things. keep a careful eye on yours. ’
‘ if we hide in the kelp, we might see them as they pass. ’
‘ i’ve heard the tales. to catch you means to gain a granted wish. ’
‘ i’ve never seen your likeness, only heard the myths. ’
‘ come with me, beneath the sea and foam, and be mine. ’
‘ some of us live in the ocean, others in rivers and streams and even trees. ’
‘ falling in love with a human is an old tale. tell me a new one. ’
‘ so you gave up your fin for legs ? ’
‘ soon i will be nothing but seafoam. ’
‘ what is a heart, but an ocean of secrets ? ’
‘ you’d let yourself be undone and remade for someone you’ve never known. that is not love. ’
‘ let your dreams sink to the depths. they’ve done you no good. ’
MASQUERADES.
‘ i’ve never seen so many unfamiliar faces. ’
‘ he’s / she’s / they’ve been looking at me all evening. ’
‘ would you do me the honor of a dance ? ’
‘ neither of us need know the other tonight. i prefer the mystery. ’
‘ your choice of costume is rather extravagant. ’
‘ what fun would it be, if i took this off ? ’
‘ i’m certain we’ve met before. ’
‘ i’ve always longed for a night like this. it’s something out of a dream. ’
‘ won’t you come away with me ? there’s a balcony just outside. ’
‘ i’m inclined to think we’ve never met before, and perhaps will never meet again after tonight. ’
‘ you look like you know how to waltz. care to ? ’
‘ i must stand up with someone this evening, and i don’t see why it can’t be you. ’
‘ would you stop staring so intently ? what do you think to find ? ’
‘ i’ll stop bothering you if you agree to dance with me. ’
‘ please take it off. i want to see you. ’
‘ i’ve never been to a masque before. ’
‘ it seems our attire makes opposites of us. ’
‘ i’ve never seen a more hideous costume than that one. ’
‘ i can’t stay much longer. you see, i’m not supposed to be here at all. ’
‘ you’ll never know who i am. ’
‘ people like you always make a fool of me. ’
‘ oh. i thought you were someone else. ’
‘ i’ll give you three chances to guess who i am. ’
‘ the next time i offer you my hand, you’ll get more than a dance from me. ’
‘ i’ve wanted to dance beneath stars like these for as long as i can remember. ’
‘ what do you look like ? ’
‘ that look in your eyes tells me all i need to know. ’
‘ you won’t like what you’ll see. ’
‘ i recognize your voice. ’
‘ you’ll know the truth before the night is up. ’
‘ i’ve heard the darkest of dances are the best for falling in love to. ’
‘ you don’t know it now, but we’re friends already. ’
‘ can’t we pretend a little while longer ? ’
‘ it’s when the party is over that we learn to know each other most. ’
‘ happily ever after can’t come so easily as a single night dancing. ’
MAGIC.
‘ i’ve caught you. you have to undo the spell for me now. ’
‘ think carefully before asking for something well beyond the reach of mortal power. ’
‘ i think i know a spell for that. ’
‘ i can’t help you. but there are people in other worlds, in the moors and hills and trees, that might. ’
‘ you must gather the necessary ingredients for such a potion. ’
‘ true love is never the answer to the riddle. not when so much as life and death is at stake. ’
‘ i’ve found and made my way here by right. you can’t deny me the answers i seek. ’
‘ be warned: monsters hide between the trees and whisper in magic tongues. ’
‘ it always makes a fraction of sense to be careful what you wish for. ’
‘ i’ve been turned into an unsightly creature, and i need a way of turning back. ’
‘ not all magical stories happen in castles, or cottages in the wood. ’
‘ preposterous. magic and sorcery do not exist but in the minds of superstitious fools. ’
‘ get back from that cauldron ! it’s dangerous. ’
‘ i don’t mess with things like candles and the stars and the moon after dark. it never ends well. ’
‘ i am something ancient. my name has been forgotten by mortal mouths and is found only in their oldest texts. ’
‘ not all fairy helpers are kind, and not all villains are ugly, or even cruel. ’
‘ if you want my help, you must earn it. ’
‘ is this something i could learn ? ’
‘ i don’t want to be ordinary, and i don’t care what the risks are. ’
‘ you think to put a curse on me ? i will spend my life defying it. ’
‘ stay back, witch, and keep your spells from sneaking past your lips. ’
‘ you must chain a magician in more than metal or rope if you wish to stop them. ’
‘ that’s a parlor trick. show me real magic. ’
‘ only you can break the spell. it is something you are meant for. ’
‘ fate is nothing but an illusion placed in our heads, that we might follow the words of others and not our own intentions. ’
‘ whatever has brought me here, i cannot turn back now. ’
‘ soon the clock will strike, and nothing more might be done. ’
‘ magic requires taking in order to give. it will keep demanding parts of you. ’
Was wondering if I would refer to mimi as a good person and i guess, maybe? But not really. And if you ask her, she doesn't really put herself into a good or bad category. She has always been told she's special. She's the vessel of an orisha -- an orisha of justice and destruction. So mimi is like, she's not good or bad, she just IS. And that whatever she chooses to do is just. She does whatever the hell she wants and basically what serves her ( and her family ). She's not evil but she's self serving. But there are some objectively evil things that she'd always fight against. Ig.
Mimi has two great healers that she relies on, her brother, Omari, and her best friend, Ephraim. She'll go to them when she needs strong healing. ( if they are not already by her side. ). She only knows basic healing magic, and can cauterize her own wounds with her fire. And even though she can be hurt, killing her is hard since she typically always has cast her protection spell.
Protections spells have a caveat though. And while she is not worried about it, she has been warned. Dying and being brought back with protection spells can eventually lead to insanity and it is best to avoid it. Though, given that Oya is a goddess of death as well, she wonders if she should even heed such a warning.
going off this one ... mimi often wears white body paint. body paint is used in alot of their celebrations and milestones and rites, can also be used like makeup for beautification. different colors can mean different things, and the more intricate designs are usually for those with a higher status. mimi often wears the paint on her hands and on her face. the designs she wears most often are for her protection. basically like sigils.

thinking ...
i actually did go through with the impulse to create a canon verse for mimi where she does go through the engagement with ayo and ends up marrying him, and in the future does have a son with him. that actually will be her official canon since that is the duty of a princess. but it's also official that this marriage is for duty and that it's loveless. there is respect there and she will protect him like family because of their son, but that's about it.
physically and emotionally, mimi had no intentions to be faithful to him, and ayo honestly doesn't care and had no plans himself ( though he cares little for physical pleasures like that, but mimi does ). mimi has her own lovers, and he's able to take some as well if he chooses. she just doesn't flaunt it around. it's more like an open secret.
but i will say, if mimi did marry for love, she would be faithful. but because this marriage was without it, she finds no reason to be.
i had way too much fun with this one, y’all.
mimi comes from a big family, but actually doesn't want a big one for herself. when she eventually has children, because she does want them, she wants 1-2 max. she did have some insecurities about what her short-comings may be as a mother, but given that she was often taking care of her younger siblings, she feels like she has the temperament for it.
1st row — omari, nailah, xiomara
2nd row — rufaro, ephraim, ami
in mimi’s canon verse, she’s from a country called dhar tahiti. she’s the first princess, but it wasn’t always going to be like that. her father was not in line to be king nor was he born with ‘ royal ’ blood.
not many would dare to say it aloud these days, but mimoa’s father, rashidi, is a usurper. the late king was a tyrant and was going to run the country into ruins. rashidi, only nineteen at the time, believed that this country could be something more — that it should be something more. he was one of the main leaders of a rebellion that would last for six years.
it was difficult to gain support in the beginning for a lot of reasons, fear being the number one, and a lot of people who initially started the rebellion did die within the first year, snuffed out by the late king and his assassins. and it was kind of messy with some internal strife that weakened them — basically fights over the vision of where they wanted the country to go ( some wanted to close their borders, others to expand them, etc. ). but eventually, they named rashidi as leader, decided to follow him, gained support and started to become a real threat to the crown. especially when rashidi prayed to the gods and they listened, granting him power. so, of course, people rallied behind him.
mimoa’s mother, onyeka, was one of the people who was in the rebel group. she was fighting on the front lines and only really took a break when she was pregnant, first at 22 then at 24 ( 3 years and 1 year before the rebellion ended and the rebels won ). so, mimi was actually born during the rebellion, and became princess when her father won the war. though obviously she remembers none of it.
the birth of her and her brother did serve a lot as a morale boost, tbh. the rebels had started to feel fatigued after fighting so long, but the birth of rashidi’s children ( and the circumstances of them — meaning the omens that many took as proof of the gods’ favor ) renewed their fervor.
it’s been twenty-five years since the war ended. and though rashidi is still semi-young ( 50 years of age ) and in good health, he’s thinking of passing on the mantle of king to omari sooner rather than later. as for now, though, the kingdom is working on forging alliances and expanding their reach. and mimoa is one of the people at the forefront of that.
edit: so, as king, her father has been slowly expanding their land, but first had to work on stabilizing their country ( a six-year long rebellion definitely meant he had some work to do in restoring peace ). and then he would focus on claiming unclaimed land or taking cities. of course, he’s always focused on forging alliances. only recently, within the last decade, has the focus been on claiming other countries.
Queen of Swords. Art by Taylor Hultquist-Todd, from Myths & Legends: An Illustrated Tarot.
The queen of swords is Oya, a powerful Orisha celebrated primarily by the Yoruba religion. She’s the goddess of weather, queen of the Niger River, and a fierce warrior.
