Though he is a fictional character, his story is a very specific reference to the Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment which ran from 1932 and 1972. 600 poor Black men in Alabama were told they were getting free health care but in fact they were actually lab rats that were never given their actual diagnosis of disease and were never given the treatment they actually needed, despite treatments becoming available with advances in medical care. 128 men died because of this study. The only reason it stopped is because it was leaked to the press. This is not something I learned about in my high school history class.
