This photo of John playing chess against someone in 1978/1979 has always intrigued me so much.
I can't be 100% sure about the placement of black's queen and kingside rook & pawn, but the board looks something like this, and I have so many questions:
Who the hell is playing black?? I need to know!
what kind of crazy risks do you take in the early game to end up with a board like this? John must play like an absolute beast
whose turn is it? it's a critical question, because if it's white's, John wins in two moves. If it's black's, black wins in half a dozen moves. Based on John's happy grin, I'm guessing he's winning! ;)
If anyone can see the positions of the black pieces better than me, let me know! Lets puzzle over this chess game together!!
