Talons as sharp as knives touch the skin. But the time has passed for claw strikes. No, the talon-branches had done so well. It feels its prey for a pulse, for a struggle, but no such sign reaches its form. Gleefully, it parts its jaws and tears into the flesh with little resistance.

On the other side of the talon-branches sits a beast of orange and white. Its amber eyes lock onto the small form that perched upon that wretched bush. Skeletons were pierced by the bush’s claws and the orange beast curled its lips in disgust. How could something so small have so much malice in its form?

The fox takes the hint and walks away, leaving the butcherbird to its feast.
