"Thank you - ehm" een voorzichtige blik glijdt langs mijn naamplaatje. 

"Elisabeth!" triomfeert hij.

Ik gun hem een vriendelijke glimlach en wens hem smakelijk eten.

"Anything else I can do for you?" vraag ik. 

"Well, Elisabeth, where are you from?"

"From Belgium, sir." glimlach ik terwijl ik naar mijn naamplaatje wijs.

"Belgium? Ah! We went there, didn’t we, honey? We went to - now, what’s the name of… Bruges!" eindigt de  vijftiger trots.

Mijn innerlijke Ongeduldigheid slaat met veel allure haar ogen ten hemel, maar ik ga enthousiast de conversatie aan over hoe mooi Brugge wel is, hoe prachtig het Middeleeuws decor is en - ja inderdaad! - het bewonderenswaardig is hoe goed het bewaard is gebleven. 

En zoals gewoonlijk herhaal ik voor de twintigste keer het verhaal over hoe Brugge een UNESCO-domein is. Ik eindig de conversatie door erop te wijzen dat met al dit praten hun maaltijd koud wordt. Geen mens die mag weten dat ondertussen vijf tafels wachten op hun salade, andere 2 op hun water, en een andere tafel die haar dessert moet krijgen.
