Bad At Casual
Fives x reader
description: stream of consciousness fluff tbh, you and Fives are in a friends with benefits situation but realize you both want more
warnings: very mild suggestiveness
The thing about Fives was that he seemed impossible for you to keep at a distance. You had tried, at first. You'd both tried. Your arrangement was a pretty simple one: late nights when he was between campaigns, easy kisses, laughter muffled into pillows, and absolutely no promises because neither of you felt like you had any right to make them.
But he'd been spending more time with you lately. And leaving things at your place like he was expecting to come back to you regularly. A spare set of blacks folded badly in the corner of your drawer and a half-empty bottle of soap in your shower that you were pretty sure he only pretended to use because he liked using yours better.
Honestly, you probably should've minded, given how casual this was supposed to be, but you didn't. Instead, you'd started buying the caf he liked just to keep it stocked for him and counting down the days until he was supposed to get back from campaigns.
Now, he was stretched out beneath you on your couch, his hands kneading your hips gently as you straddled him. His armor had long since been abandoned in a careless pile by the door and his curls were mussed from your fingers.
"You're thinking too loud," Fives was murmuring against your mouth, squeezing your hips. "Something important or am I just not kissing you hard enough to distract you?"
You huffed a laugh against his lips, your fingers slipping into his hair again to watch his eyes flutter half-closed. "Maybe both," you teased. "Maybe you're losing your touch."
Fives made an offended sound, but was grinning anyway. "Losing my touch? That’s what you’re accusing me of? After all I've done for you?"
You raised an eyebrow. "You mean leaving your boots where I can trip over them?"
"That's strategic," he retorted teasingly. "Keeps you on your toes."
"Pretty sure it keeps me on the floor," you shot back with an eyeroll.
Fives laughed, sliding one arm up your back to press you closer to him. "Come on. Whose arms do you fall into every time?"
"You were in the kitchen last time," you pointed out, though you allowed him to tuck you closer, your chest pressed against his.
"Emotionally," he said, completely solemn, "I was there."
You laughed fondly, and Fives looked so pleased with himself that you simply had no choice but to kiss the smugness off his face. That was the plan, anyway, but the kiss went soft too quickly, slow and languid as his arms locked around you to keep you close.
When you pulled back, his eyes were still half-lidded, his smile smaller now. He stared at you quietly for a moment, and you tilted your head slightly. "What?" you murmured.
"Nothing," he replied, his thumb brushing along your side. "Just missed this."
You smiled fondly, your gaze flicking over his face affectionately as you kept playing with his curls. "Me too."
You were both quiet for a long moment until you noticed the way that Fives' small faltered just slightly like he was getting caught up with some thought. You tried for a tease to break the moment. "…You know, I think maybe we're getting worse at this friends with benefits thing."
Fives exhaled through his nose, his smile coming back, though there was still something thoughtful in his expression. "Maybe," he said, tracing lazy shapes at the small of your back. "Can't say I'm entirely certain why we're doing casual anyway."
You blinked down at him, surprised. "Because that was the point…?"
"Maybe at first," he admitted, his voice low, leaning up closer to you till his nose brushed yours. "But, baby, I don't think I've been very casual about you for a while."
Your breath caught as his lips skimmed your jaw, tender enough to make your whole body soften against him. "Well then maybe this should be...you know. Not casual," you mumbled, just a little tentatively.
Fives pulled back again, slipping his hand up to the back of your head to tangle in your hair, gently tugging you down till your forehead touched his. "Mm." He hummed agreement. "Thought it'd be easier this way," he admitted. "So…it's been months of trying to…trying to pretend like…"
"Like this isn't more?" you finished quietly.
His grip tightened around you. "Yeah."
You swallowed and then smiled, small and shaky. "...So let's not pretend," you murmured. "We're both bad at it. And it kinda seems like you've set up semi-permanent camp here anyway."
Fives huffed quietly. "Semi-permanent?" He searched your face for a moment, brushing his thumb over your cheekbone. Suddenly, he laughed quietly. "Thinking about it, I guess we gave up on the casual thing a while ago."
You grinned, leaned into his touch, and nodded. "Guess so."
Fives hummed and gently pulled you down into another kiss, slow and smiling, one hand warm on your cheek while the other settled at your waist. You melted into him with a soft sigh, your fingers tightening in his hair as he kissed you once, twice, then again.
When you finally pulled back a little, Fives chased your mouth with a quiet laugh. "So," he murmured, lips brushing yours, "permanent camp?"
You smiled against him. "Don't push it." But you kissed him again anyway.
