“Well, you do a stand up job.” She hummed, admiring the other girls handwriting and system of taking notes. Rosemary could never be that precise, her notes were usually a jumbled together or lacking in the actual key points.  

“Thank you,” Charity grinned, pride swelling in her chest for a moment. “You can use them for as long as you need them; I’m done with them for the moment.”

“Yes.” She shook her head as if trying to be rid of an invisible threat that had landed on her head. “Positive.” Irma could do positive, even if it killed her, she could smile through anything. Merlin, was she sick of smiling in the face of misery. “Let’s be teens and talk about trivial things like we ought to. Boys, girls, who’s dating who and who drank too much firewhisky last Friday night.”

“Yes! Lets rot our brains with gossip and laughter. If we focus on the heartache, they’ve won,” Charity stated, her words getting more serious as she went. “So, who did drink too much?”

“Autumn in Scotland is… beautiful, isn’t it?” She turned to the person leant on the opposite side of the window frame, looking out on the courtyard. “I do wish the circumstance of this Autumn was as beautiful. I just keep staring out windows trying to pretend nothing has happened and then I feel guilty for trying to forget.”

“Autumn is my favourite season! All the colours are gorgeous and the crunchy leaves... it’s just beautiful,” Charity sighed, her gaze automatically shifting out the closest window. “We need to focus on the good things in life, I guess. Smile a little and keep positive.”

“I know that right now probably ain’t the time to be askin’, but could I look over your notes? I saw they looked so pristine and I’d just love to take a peek.” Rosemary drawled out, her voice meek and timid. “If I don’t pass defense against the dark arts I’m gonna be in a world of trouble.”

“Yes, of course you can! I pride myself on making my notes clear and to the point,” Charity stated, collecting a few pieces of parchment together before handing them over to Rosemary.

“You and I both.” He was quiet for a moment. “I don’t even want to think about that, though. And — maybe it’s best, not to? To think about worst case scenarios? What good’s it gonna do? I … I dunno. It’s fucked up.”

“So fucked up,” Charity echoed, her teeth nibbling at her lower lip. “I’ve asked my mum and dad to write to me daily so that I know they’re okay; I need daily updates to make sure they’re okay.”

“Yeah, yeah. Me too. Can’t imagine going through that.” James scratched his neck, shifted a little. “You can’t feel guilty or somethin’ about that, yeah? Don’t know if you do, but still.”

“It’s families like mine that have been ruined, though. It could have easily been mine, my family in the papers. It makes my stomach churn just thinking of it,” Charity replied, a soft sigh tumbling from her lips.

“Not saying they deserve it..” yes he was. He thought hey all deserved it for being muggle Norns and muggle supporters. Of course he wouldn’t say that. “But if they got themselves killed they probably weren’t smart enough to stay inside.”

Smart enough to stay inside? There weren’t many ways for a muggle to protect themselves within four walls when a wizard had magic on their side. “It still takes a horrible, evil person to end another persons life. I just hope the people behind it all will eventually deal with the consequences.”

Heaving a heavy sigh, Miriam agreed. It was extraordinarily hard to make people realize it, the political climate reflecting how ignorant people were about muggles. “I’ll NEVER understand people finding the most insane ways to justify their bigotry. Without muggles, wizard kind would’ve been extinct a long long time ago and incredibly more inbred if that’s possible.”

“The wizards that would be around would have two heads and scales,” Charity added, shaking her head with a little look of disgust. “Maybe we need to think of a way to convince people that we need muggles in order to survive as a race!”

“We’re not MEDUSA we won’t turn you to stone if you look us in the eyes,” Dorcas commented, rolling her eyes at Charity’s comments. The world had always been horrible to one extent or the other, she could never understand people being shocked by it. “The world’s an ugly place, that’s for certain.”

“I-I know... sorry,” Charity replied, her gaze dropping to her feet. “Bloody ugly. I guess I’m living in a Hogwarts bubble.”

“I think if we just try and practice empathy first it won’t be as hard. You know, I don’t think that they want to make others uncomfortable.”

“No, I doubt they want people being uncomfortable but I’m just lost for words. I can’t believe it’s happened in the first places... And so many people, too,” Charity frowned, her gaze resting on her hands.

“There’s not much we can do, unfortunately. Except be here for the people who have lost someone.”

“I can’t understand how anyone could believe that this is the sort of punishment someone deserves. Simply over blood status?” Charity questioned, her brow furrowed in thought. “Makes me sick.”

“I’ve got no clue. Don’t even know if I wanna understand it,” said James, shrugging a little. “And I mean, they’re still the same people, right? Just gotta be there for ‘em, I suppose, if they’re your mates. And if not, still try, or something. I dunno. It’s fucked.”

“I just feel so sad for them all,” Charity added. “My family are safe - for now, who knows what might happen - and their families have been torn apart.”

“Just like you normally would,” said Alice, looking Charity straight in the eye. “The last thing … these students need is you treating them any differently.”

Her cheeks flushed as Alice spoke. “... I’m sorry. I just... I can’t get my head around it.” Slowly, Charity’s gaze fluttered up to Alice’s face, her eyes scanning the other’s features. “Hi, Alice.”

“Easy solution is– don’t. If they’re family dead its probably for good reason.” Amycus didn’t have much sympathy for those killed by dark wizards, knowing it was those his family kept company with that were doing the killing.

“I don’t think anyone deserves being murdered,” Charity replied, her expression one of shock. “Maybe they did something bad but to be murdered? No.”

“You are one hundred percent right, Char Bear, it’s tiring having people not realize how much we benefit from them,” Miriam agreed, “pass the croissants, will you?”

As she finished her mouthful, Charity reached to grab the plate of pastries. “I don’t know how to make other people realise it, though! To them, Muggles are... pointless, unhelpful humans.”

“What the Hell is going on in the world?” Charity sighed, tossing the Daily Prophet to one side. “How am I going to look these students in the eye?”
