Well, this was awkward. Standing in this small room with a complete stranger, no weapons to speak of, and impending doom on the other side of a locked door - keeping danger out, but at the same time keeping Charlie and the stranger trapped inside.

“I really should learn to keep a lock pick handy,” she said aloud, in an attempt at humor. “That’ll teach me.” Already she was scanning the room for a way out that didn’t involve working her way through a horde of monsters.

“Doctor, Doctor,” Charlie says with a smirk. Crossing her arms, she raises a perfectly sculpted brow at him. “Give me the news.”

“I’ve seen it happen,” Gwen assures her new friend. Then, quickly feeling the need to clarify, she says, “The coworker relationship, I meant, not the…” She hesitates, wondering if an amusing little confession would cross any lines. They are likely to be stuck together for some time after all… “Although, I did snog an alien once.”

“...Oh?” Now, that has Charlie’s full attention. “What was that like? Please tell me it wasn’t a Zygon.” She shudders at the thought. It’s not the suckers, though that’s a huge part of the squick factor. No, it’s the teeth. Like shark’s teeth, they are.

If Gwen had any doubts before, Charlie Bewlay’s question confirmed just how lucky she was. “It’s tough,” she agreed. “Even if you’ve got a normal job but, me, I…” she paused and chuckled briefly to herself. “Mr. Cooper. He’ll love that. We’re married but I kept my name. He’s a Williams, actually; and I must’ve done something in a past life to deserve him in this one. All the late nights and secret keeping- you know how it goes, but he hasn’t left me.”

Gwen smiled warmly and mused, “There’s enough of us women kicking alien arse. You have to believe someone out there deserves you.”

“Oh, you did get lucky, then, didn’t you?” Charlie smiles. She feels just the tiniest stab of jealousy, but then, she’s always a little jealous of anyone in healthy relationships. She’s only human, after all.

She shrugs and tucks a stray lock of hair behind her ear. “Pretty sure my best bet is to find someone else in the business.” Grinning, she huffs a small laugh and adds, “Or an alien.”

“Beatrice,” she replied, a lopsided grin on her face, as she shook Charlie’s hand. “You should try the Philippines. Compared to that place, this so much more peaceful and tiny bit deserted. Trust me, I’ve been there.”

“Mm, never been to the Philippines,” she replies with a soft smile. “I take it you do some traveling, then?” Not like Charlie doesn’t already know, but saying so wouldn’t a bright idea. Not like she can use the UNIT explanation. “I never seem able to get out of the country unless it’s business-related.”

“You’re very welcome,” Charlie replies as she hands over the creamer. Bit odd, running into Donna Noble in a coffee shop of all places. UNIT has files on all of the Doctor’s current and past companions. Where this woman was concerned, all intelligence pointed at her not retaining any memories of her time with the Doctor. Strange, that. She supposes there’s a very good reason for that.

She smiles. “Charlie,” she says, holding out her hand. “Bit crowded here, yeah?”

Gwen laughs quietly but she has to concede. “I’m not the waitin’-around-to-be-saved type, but that’s it. I’d let the dog do it, even.”

She trusts the room to both muffle their voices and keep them safely out of sight and reach of the new nightmare creatres but that’s not enough to make her comfortable. “’Shame, but I wouldn’t bet on us against them. We don’t know enough yet.”

In truth, the only concrete fact their teams shared is that the insect aliens are hostile and in no hurry to accept offers of peace or help. Gwen sighs and tries to think of a better topic. “Seeing anyone?”

Charlie purses her lips and huffs a sigh, one of boredom, not annoyance. She thinks of her recent dates, all of which failed miserably. “No, not really. Was married, once. Haven’t really dated much since then. Most blokes don’t want to deal with my work schedule. Dated someone once who wanted me to quit my job and stay at home, raising his kids.” She looks over at Gwen, quirking a brow. “What about you? Have a Mr. Cooper at home?”

“I prefer Charlie, actually,” she replies, as she, too, tucks her pistol away into the shoulder holster kept hidden underneath her jacket. Leaning against a wall and crossing her arms, she sighs. Not much space in here, really. Hopefully they won’t be here too much longer.

Charlie grins ruefully at that, though she’s sure Gwen can’t see it; there’s not much light in here, either. “Yeah, except we’re not going to be saved by Will Smith. More’s the pity.”
