NEXT UPCYCLE COLLABORATION PROJECT ♻️- COLLAGE DESIGN
I wanted to go into and work with paper collage as I felt like this was necessary to expand my portfolio and my designing skills.
For this design, I just went with the flow, putting pieces of paper shirts together and as I went along and eventually I came up with the idea of putting my two different coloured shirts together. I tried to create a sort of asymmetrical flowy style of sleeves, to add dimension but also to link back to my trends research I had previously done. I have also added pockets onto this shirt, making it valuable in terms of holding and storing things.
I like this design although, I could've probably done more to make the shirt more unique. I also feel like this shirt could've been better in terms of creating to make it look more understandable when people look and come across it.
NEXT UPCYCLE COLLABORATION PROJECT ♻️- DIGITAL DESIGNS
I decided to experiment even more when it comes to designing. I did this by then using procreate to create two digital designs, using the same colours my shirts are. I used different brushes in the procreate app to fully understand and experiment with different brushes and textures. For both of these designs, I wanted to use the patterned pieces of my shirt, which is why I had to use procreate to make it easier for myself to do so.
First design:
For this first design, I wanted to make a work-ready, smart, formal looking shirt whilst including trending aspects of spring/summer 2026 such as statement pieces and floral motifs. The collar of this shirt is the pattern of the inside of my actual shirts that I had chosen. I did this so the design looks even more unique and special.
Second design:
When it comes to my second digital design, I wanted to make a more beachy and feminine styled shirt. I took inspiration from asymmetrical features and flowy pieces, and off the shoulder garments with a similar heart shaped top. I included the patterns onto my design in the front of this shirt to add more tropical patterns and details which also links back to my SS26 research.
I don't really like these designs as to me it's they're quite basic and boring so if I was to do this again I would try and add more unique features to make them stand out. I would also try and experiment with layering and different types of shirts.
NEXT UPCYCLE COLLABORATION PROJECT ♻️- ILLUSTRATION DESIGNS
First design:
For this design, I drew out a more fitted style of shirt. This is because I feel like fitted shirts create a more professional look which references and goes back to Next plc which tends to produce professional, trendy and elegant looks. I then went onto creating statement balloon styled sleeves. This is because, I learnt and found out that balloon trousers are very in and popular which in within my trends research of SS26. Linking back to my trends research, I included huge flowers onto the shirt which I would've created using my cyan shirt I had chosen from my two shirts I had to use. Scarf dressing is also a very current trend of SS26 which is why I chose to do a little wrap around situation around the midsection of the shirt. This overall, creates a unique look. Throughout this design, I tried to keep it summery, linking back to different trends such as asymmetrical styles and bold colours. I absolutely love this design, though, I feel like If I was to do this again, I will take into consideration of the sizes of the two shirts I have so that I know I wouldn't run out of fabric.
Second design:
For my second illustration design, I kept this shirt elegant by creating a peplum style. Elegancy links back to Next plc as they tend to create and resell work-ready, smart, trendy and fashionable products. I kept this shirt within the trends as I referenced floral pieces such as the floral pattern and the peplum which is made from my cyan coloured shirt and shaped into leaves. This design is my ultimate favourite and I would've took this one into actually making it if it was up to my decision. Though, if I was to do this again, I would make sure to take into consideration of my time management as I didn't consider this which would've been my downfall for this design as I may not have been able to complete it if I had to create it. For this design, I kept the summer theme throughout, keeping trending aspects such as a polka dot pattern within the pockets of the jorts.
Third design:
For this design, I decided to create a more playful and quirky look by including bold colours and statement silhouettes. For the actual shirt design, I decided to create a more baggier/ casual shirt which sat in a rounded shape at the bottom. I included trending aspects of SS26 into this shirt by the Polka dot pattern and the huge flower in the middle of the shirt. I then decided to create statement, flowy out/ asymmetrical sleeve which further links back to my trending research. The collar of this shirt certainly makes a statement by the oversized style. I love this design and I feel like it could really be unisex and suit anyone. Though, if I was to do this again, I would probably try and reconsider the rounded part of the shirt as since I actually created this shirt, it was hard to do.
Fourth design:
For this final illustration design, I wanted to create a more unisex style of shirt. This is because even though Next plc's audience is prominent women, I wanted to create a shirt where everyone would've felt included. For this whole shirt design, I went with a theme of asymmetrical styles and shapes, linking back to my SS26 trends. Overall, the whole design kept a summer style whilst including trends such as 'scarf dressing' which I tried to showcase within the blue shorts and the sun hat. I like this shirt, though, I feel like it's quite basic and not unique so if I was to do this again, I would definitely try and include more unique aspects.
For all of these illustration figures, I kept them unique and absolutely 'me' by adding multiple eyes (which I adore). I used colourful and bold colours which I'm also obsessed with, using and including trends whilst considering target audience and customers of the sustainable market and Next plc.
As a whole, I think these illustrations are incredible!
Next Upcycle Project Research
For this lesson, over a week, I had to research and look into Next Plc as a company all together. This was so I could gain insight and knowledge on Next and their values, target customers, etc. I feel like I learnt quite a bit about Next as a business when it came to researching.
What is Next?
Next is a global clothing, footwear and furniture retailer. Primarily popular in Britain, they have gained loyal and trustworthy customers.

Researching these topics on Next and current trends will overall help me with this project as I will now be able to know what to specifically take into consideration of features and aspects for my upcoming designs and my final shirt garment. Practicing my research skills will also be valuable as I will now be able to improve and learn more about researching for future exams, adapting my abilities for the better.
NEXT UPCYCLE COLLABORATION PROJECT ♻️- SHIRT MANIPULATION 6
When it comes to my second design, I wanted to incorporate a SS2026 trend of statement pieces. I created a casual looking tank from the front but changed it to be upside down. This links back to the Next customer of millennials as they're mostly looking for casual and comfortable outfits, suitable for everyday or work wear. However, this design is unique by the spin off, of the upside down shirt in the front. For the back of this garment, I tied the back together, this creates a summery vibe which suits the Spring/ Summer style.
If I was to do this again, I would try and change the back possibly to try and make this shirt better as I don't really like what I did with the back of the shirt.
I named this design 'the upsi tank' for it's obvious upside down shirt in the front and the tank style. I shortened it down to 'upsi' for a more cute and Gen Z approved aesthetic.
NEXT UPCYCLE COLLABORATION PROJECT ♻️ - SHIRT MANIPULATION 5
For this design piece, I just knew I wanted to make more statement pieces throughout shirt manipulating so this is what I came up with. I tried to keep the same length of the shirt to suit the Next customer of millennials whilst keeping and maintaining the sort of styles within shirts that Gen Z people love. I feel like this shirt overall gives a beachy vibe which links back to the spring/summer reference I was going off. I really love this shirt design, it's probably one of my favourites so far. However, I feel like If I was to do this again, I would definitely try and do something to fix the back of the shirt or the bottom of the shirt as it sort of looks plain. I feel like this shirt gives off a casual yet luxurious/ elegant style, perfect for any time of the day!
After I had done this, I then went onto creating design boards for each shirt manipulation design for my portfolio.
NEXT UPCYCLE COLLABORATION PROJECT ♻️ - SHIRT MANIPULATION 4
For this design, I was inspired and wanted to create a unique garment with an asymmetrical touch. This is because, when doing my earlier research, I found out that some SS26 looks included asymmetrical styles. This will make my design reliable in terms of meeting my projects criteria as it links back with trending looks. I then also had the idea of incorporating the patterns within my two shirts as I wanted to include this specific detail. I think it was good to incorporate these patterns as they also link back to Spring/ Summer 2026 floral and tropical pattern trends.
I don't really like this design personally. This is because I don't think I like how I executed the design just to try and show off the different patterns. Next time, I could try and definitely change this design overall for the better.
I named this design 'The tea party' this is because after finishing this piece, I had noticed the 'teacup' handle shape within the sleeve I did. Also, the different patterns sort of stand out, making it look like a party of colours and patterns. This could link back to the Sustainable customer (Gen z) as they're often associated with bright colours and dramatic styling.
NEXT UPCYCLE COLLABORATION PROJECT ♻️ -SHIRT MANIPULATION 3
When it comes to this shirt manipulation design, I actually came up with this design last and wanted to feedback and play into the statement clothing style choices which are currently trending in SS26. After that, I experimented with the white shirt and brought the timeless trend of layering which is popular among generations by creating a little 'wrap-around' moment with the white shirt. This will be incredibly good as it suits a more open customer base.
I actually like this shirt design, fundamentally because I like the statement piece. I feel like shirt manipulation was a good way to experiment and execute my ideas down into real life designs. Though, If I was to do this again, I would try and make it so that the white wrap around shirt and the back of this design are different to make this design even better.
NEXT UPCYCLE COLLABORATION PROJECT ♻️ -SHIRT MANIPULATION 2
For this shirt manipulation design, I wanted to take on asymmetrical styles which links back to my research on SS26 trends which I had previously done. I then went onto layering the blue shirt I was given over the white shirt, creating a flowy and timeless look. I did this as layering when it comes to society within the fashion world and everyday styling will always be timeless and popular. I think the risen collar on this shirt gives an edgy vibe to the already sophisticated and classy design, making it more unique. I like this shirt as I feel like it can be unisex and really be for anyone. Though, If I was to do this again, I feel like I would have liked to focus more with the back or front of the shirt design to make it more exciting.
I like how I used both shirts to create this design and not just one, allowing my abilities to be shown.
NEXT UPCYCLE COLLAB PROJECT ♻️- SHIRT MANIPULATION 1
For this design, I was very inspired by the Gen z (younger generations) summer styles and aesthetics, definitely making me want to take on this look. I chose to do this design as my first one as I wanted to replicate and showcase a simpler design. To match the Next target customer or people looking for more modesty, I feel like this design could have been styled with a long sleeve undershirt. Perhaps I could've done this by using my other shirt I was given for these designs to create a look like this. If I was to do this again, I would've used my other shirt so that I wasn't just using one shirt and used two which will be able to showcase my skills and abilities when it comes to creating and sewing.
I like this design. However, I feel like I could've played around more with the shirts to get a more dramatic and loveable design.
