Christmas was Kit’s favorite holiday, had been since he was a child, his favorite tradition being the Christmas ball his family threw every year on Christmas Eve. His mother and father may be gone, but now he could share his traditions with Ella.

“Our guests will be waiting for us in the ballroom, are you almost ready?” Kit asked, his tone as excited as a small child’s.

rosy cheeks bright with expectation reflected in glass as figure moves tremblingly to check on every detail of her gown. lace of glittering red adorning her waist she feels not at all ready to play her part in the royal ball. shaky breath agitates her spirits as she paces around the room when sweetening voice rings to her, ferrying the angst that goes in her heart. hands extended she forces a smile through dainty lips as gaze falls upon the ground, refusing to face her beloved. ❛ i don’t think i’ll be ready at all no matter how long i spend pacing around this room. there are too many people out there waiting for us. what if i do something incredibly silly and ruin everything? ❜

“You won’t ruin anything.” Kit reassured her, with a gentle touch to her waist, and taking her hand in his.

“Tonight is about celebrating Christmas and being merry, there is very little pressure tonight. Besides, I will be at your side the entire time.”

It had been Ella’s idea to spend Christmas at the Farmhouse, a wonderful idea if Kit had ever heard of one, so after an afternoon of playing in the freshly fallen snow, the royal couple made their way inside to sit before the fire.

Adding another log on, Kit smiled at his bride.

“Are you warm enough? I can ask the servants to fetch us another blanket if you’re still cold.”

“Somewhere special,” Kit chuckled before seeing her distress, “It’s not far, my darling. You’ll see soon enough.” Holding her hand Kit rapped the top of the carriage to signal the driver, and off they went leaving behind the hustle and bustle of the palace.

“I’ll give you a hint, it’s somewhere you’ve been before, nice and quiet with no royal duties to worry about.”

motionless in her seat she feels her heart skip a beat. head darting towards her beloved kit, even though knowing all her eyes would find is darkness. even so, she can see him. each line of his so adored features memoried by heart. the flick of hope stirrs inside. could her father’s house be the center of kit’s great scheme? and why she suddenly feared to ask and be desapointed should the answer be negative? the corner of her lips arch ever so slightly, a hesitant smile waiting to bloom. “could it be possible that your taking us to my father’s chateau?”

“... Perhaps.” Kit smiled, glad that Ella was blindfolded though perhaps she could hear it in his voice that she had guessed at the truth of his surprise.

“Like I said it’s not far, you will see my surprise soon enough.”

“Today would be a perfect day for a ride in the woods, don’t you think?” Kit said gazing outside at the sunshine. 

“What do you say, my queen, feel up to going riding with me?”

Looking up from her book, Ella eagerly nodded, leaving her book behind on the couch to join him by the window. “Not a cloud in sight.” smiling up at him, she rested a hand on his arm. “Give me ten minutes to change into my riding habits? Last time I went riding with a normal dress my ladies almost had a heart attack!”

“Ten minutes,” Kit smiled kissing Ella’s cheek, it wouldn’t do to wind up Ella’s ladies over a mud-stained skirt.

“I’ll meet you in the stables, we’ll take Major, he needs a good run.”

“You can try,” Kit said as he guided her outside to their waiting carriage where their luggage was already loaded and ready to go. He wanted to keep Ella in the dark until they arrived, so he had planned the entire surprise behind her back.

“Mind the step,” He warned her as he helped her into the carriage.

confidence deflates as she acknowledges the outside space. gracefully she climbs the steps of the carriage feeling even a little more surprised than before. a long moment dissolves into silence. the enginees inside her head almost audible as she tries and fail to guess where this journey would lead them - all alternatives too silly to be voiced. “oh, never mind!” - she states defeated. “i have never been good in guessing games.” - she sits a bit restlessly nearly consumed by curiosity. “can you at least tell me where we are going?”

Technically, Kit’s first act as king was to find the Mystery Princess, but he didn’t dare correct his mother on that tiny detail.

“Ella has asked for kindness,” Kit said instead he knew his mother, knew that this betrayal angered her. But Ella wanted the Grand Duke and her stepfamily to be shown the kindness they had denied her.

“I fully intend to honor her wish.”

they were still alive, which theresia found quite generous already. that was her kindness. when her anger surfaced, it burned like a forest fire with barely anything able to extinguish it, but she was no longer the co-ruler of a kingdom and would have to find a compromise with her son.

she didn’t like it but refused to let the matter become a reason for them to fight, refused to have that damned man get to them like that. “ you know they already get to keep their lives. in any other kingdom, they would have been publically executed for the treason they committed. ” and it would have been the same in this kingdom too were she and her husband still on the throne. “ but very well. i hear her wishes and i will respect them. if i cannot have the usual punishment, then i insist on seizing all possessions and riches, and banishment for all of them as well the death penalty should they ever dare to return. i cannot tolerate a lighter punishment than that. ”

“I know it’s not the punishment you want to give,” Kit said empathetically, “but this is all Ella has asked of me, and I don’t want to disappoint her.” Ella was everything he’d dreamed she’d be and more, she was so good and kind to all she met, even if they didn’t deserve it.

“Besides, I want to be known as a good and just king, like father was, sparing the former Grand Duke in this way will prove that I am not rash in my decisions, that I don’t let emotion cloud my judgment.”

“ your reign should not start with a punishment, it will forever be written down in the history book. no, i will do it. let it be my last act as queen, before i give the title to ella on her coronation. ” hardly as sacrifice on the soon to be dowager queen’s part, and by far not something that gave her grief to do. 

if anything, theresia was itching to deal with the grand duke on her own, to bring about his ruin and damnation, and it was only good her dear husband was not here to see this betrayal. “ you oughn’t be troubled with this matter. spend your time with your fiancée instead, do some nice things with her. she has a lot to learn and needs your attention most, it will help her bear with all the grand changes she has gone through. ”

“So keep the blindfold on, it’s not far.”

light feet firmly follow his pace. each step blindly trusted to his guidance. “so mysterious…” - she teases with a giggle nearly floating in his arms towards unknown mysteries. “can i try and take a guess?”

“I have a surprise for you,” Kit announced as he tied a silk scarf around Ella’s eyes.

“But no peaking!”

the sudden statement sets her heart racing in anticipation. she drops her book on the side table, lips opening in surprise as the world goes dark before her eyes.  when she speaks there’s laughter in her voice. “what kind surprise, if you don’t mind me asking?”

“A secret one,” Kit teased as he carefully picked up his bride. “One you’re not allowed to see until we get there, so no peaking!” He added with a gentle kiss to her cheek.
