Group 11
Group 11 were given the coordinates 52°37â40.9âł1°17â35.9âłE52.628031, 1.293307  as our given location from which to work.
Group members are:
Sacha Baldwin, Agne Kusaite, Alice Leon, Sarah Lancaster, Jess Lovelock, Yury Kim, Nanlita o Kan, Marlene Lees, Charlotte Johnston
The coordinates took us to a location known as Gentlemans Walk.
Group discussions began over coffee, regarding an approach to the brief, with particular focus on personal interests, and practice. Â Ideas emerged:-
Gentlemans Walk the location â âstalk male passers-byâ in line with the road description.
Explore idea of fitting the title to the theme i.e. a gentleman
Explore/discover history of the location
Explore turning the idea of a gentleman on its head â change it
Explore representation of a gentleman â class and society
Consider asking random passers-by to wear a hat to see if their behaviur changes in line with being a gentleman
Interview people with questions about being a gentleman
Explore characteristics of a typical gentleman
Role reversal â Open a door for a gentleman/man record the response
Explore idea of manners/rudeness â the opposite of being a gentleman
Explore stereotypes
Explore location/placement of Gentlemans Walk â why next to the Marketplace?
Look how people walk. Â Observe shoes, outfit worn â does this change the style and method of the walk. Â Does the outfit change the way the man carries himself?
Explore idea of a display of hats
Explore Voice and language of a gentleman. Â Is a well spoken man a gentleman even if he isnt dressed as one? Â e.g. busker, homeless person etc.
What distinguishes a gentleman? Â Footwear, coat, Body language?
Compare gemntlemen today and of yesteryear
Some observations of male passers-by were recorded in photographic format and film. Â These are featured on our group Facebook page: Â https://www.facebook.com/groups/533119596869707/
Research suggestions:
âMon Uncleâ â Jacques Tatife âThe Girl Chewing Gumâ â John Smith âKitchen Storiesâ âWalking around a squareâ â Bruce Nowman Explore theme of âMass Observationâ
Outcome ideas:
Viewpoint from Cafe Nero window looking down. Â Perhaps as each person passes by e.g. in the form of a film/animation, the image of the person opens up displaying a response.
Gathering visual research of âgentlemenâ.
Interviewing gentlemen.
Stopping a few âgentlemanâ of different age ranges asking them the same four questions:
What do you consider a gentlemen to be?
Do you think clothing makes a gentleman? Or is clothing irrelevant?
Do you consider yourself to be a gentleman?
As generations have moved on do you think gentlemen are disappearing?
Interviewing more gentlemen.
After conducting some interviews on Tuesday we decided to go back to Gentlemanâs Walk and speak to a few more people. This time I decided to also ask a couple of women to look the female perspective on gentleman. The way in which the interviewees speaks is something we found it very interesting as it represents some of the characteristics of the speaker. we are also fascinated as to how their voice impacts and generates the listeners visualisation of them.
Quick on location observational drawings made into a zine.
we summarised the key themes coming out of the audio interviews. Â The opinions from the male point of view appeared to to be :-
Outside influences can lead to people going down the wrong path
Respect
Dress-sense
The Gentleman has disapeared
Politeness to ladies
Appearance
Doing better than your upbringing
Being surrounded by females perhaps makes you a better gentleman than being raised surrounded by males.
Class/Society

Key Themes of a gentleman from the Female point of view appeared to to be :-

Paying the bills
Upbringing attributed to the role

We decided to record funny quotes or comments made during the interviews. Â Male quotes were:-

âMy sonâs a gentlemanâ

âFashion is a funny thingâ
âEveryone does their own thing nowâ

âSomeone with mannersâ
âYou can tell alot by the way they dressâ
âMy dad is a true gent. Â Clean-cut, always offers to pay for thingsâ
So what?
We now had a good selection of work from which to make something. Â We agreed that the interviews were a very strong outcome of the research. Â They portrayed the image of todays gentleman very well, from the point of view of visitors to Gentlemans walk. Â The tone, content and personality of the interviewee were captured very well.
It was felt that a film combining the audio recordings with a visual element being hand-written text saying one of the âfunny quotesâ, and the films made by Jess, Marlene, and Agne would be effective. Â Hand-drawn work could be represented in the book âzineâ describing our work.
Examining the strengths of the members of the group, it was discovered that Jess based alot of her practice on film-making.  After narrowing down what was felt the strongest interviews, agreeing the length of the film etc⊠Jess went to work making our exhibition film.
