The most glaring thing about Gregoriska to me is that he’s set up like this eagle on a pedestal, unmoved before the Savage Hordes as a stone cold judge for all to obey. But the second the subject is Kostaki, he starts frothing from the mouth all over the floor and ripping his hair out. “Listen. Only when he learns Kostaki has risen does he rally again, even if it means dying with him.
they have more in common than either of them would ever admit, and in spite of their antagonism they are bound to each other, perpetually existing in parallel.
something something gregoriska's life ends when kostaki's does, even if he does not literally die. that he dies alongside kostaki the second time is righting the balance. neither can be without the other.
