Why do you think Sam always attacks Dean's intelligence level whenever he's influenced by supernatural forces and forced to let out his resentment? Because this is one of the things Sam is self conscious about—that Dean is constantly and repeatedly demonstrating the breadth and diversity of his intelligence on cases on the road in ways Sam admires but also feels just a little bit jealous about.

Sam worked his ass off to get into Standford with a full ride. His brother with a GED is getting him out of jail with nothing more than a clever story. His brother is coming up with brilliant plans to get rid of monsters that are nothing more than a collection of public thought. His brother is using his social intelligence and connections to find clues and leads on cases. His brother isn't violating his own principles and sacrificing someone to kill 30 demons he's coming up with a brilliant plan to mass exorcise them all without doing that. Dean is unraveling the entire case by himself in the episode where Sam screams that Dean has no mind of his own, deducing the location of and finding multiple hidden areas then fooling his own brother who's trying to murder him into trading out his shotgun for an empty pistol. Dean is reading straight through the threats and manipulations of angels and demons. Dean is prophesying the exact way your demon girlfriend is going to betray you and exactly how she is continuously misleading you. Dean is seeing through the fact that you're going to go behind his back and making a plan to steal your demon bestie's knife. Dean is reasoning through the psychology of a ghost based on nothing more than a few scraps of paper in order to find and save his brother. Dean is observing patterns and symbols and objects and things out of place that other people are not observing.
