It’s a little frustrating to me that there are so many posts on here about the U.S. elections but almost NOTHING about the 2020 census

You care about political representation? Want your neighborhood to get more funding for public programs and services like health care centers, child health insurance, school lunch programs, medicaid, public transportation, libraries, special education, federal student loans, and many many MANY more hugely important things??

FILL 👏 OUT 👏 THE 👏 CENSUS 👏 !!

The first notices will go out in the mail beginning on March 12. This year it’s even easier to respond by going online to 2020census.gov. Take 10 minutes, fill out the form for EVERYONE in your household (even if they’re not related to you) and make sure you’re represented on the census.

And the census doesn’t just count voters or citizens -- EVERYONE living in the United States should get counted. There are no questions on the 2020 census about citizenship status or immigration status, and the census will never ask for documentation of any kind.

But if this sounds boring and you want a funnier pitch for why the census is important, here’s a bit John Oliver did about the census and it’s hilarious and also accurate.

A huge number of people are already getting fucked over when it comes to being allowed to cast a vote in the upcoming elections. Let’s try to minimize what that number COULD be as much as possible. It might also be useful to have the number for the ACLU written down (or already in your phone) so you can CALL THEM while still at the polling place and get whatever information is needed in order to see about having the ACLU sue them. Write down names. Get witnesses. Take photos. MAKE IT VERY CLEAR TO THE POLLSTERS THAT YOU ARE GOING TO HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE. (Unless you have reason to believe they’re going to be assholes and try to have you arrested for doing so, in which case, be as subtle as possible.)

Sometimes I think about the sort of liberal categorization of LGBTQ identities and how they prioritize cishet clarity of definitions over lived realities and histories and it makes me really sad. For years I thought that to be recognized as a lesbian I could not express my gender feelings and explore non-binary identity. And that was because I literally was attempting to be legible as a lesbian to people who were not lesbians, who did not know the depth and complexity of lesbian identity. It wasn’t until I found spaces with (especially leftist) lesbians and bi women & bi non-binary wlw that I realized that my full honest experience is not only perfectly legible as a lesbian identity but also pretty common!

I think especially for questioning folks, it’s worth considering that the definitions you’re taught might be needlessly simple to be legible to cis straights, and the fact that your experience feels too complicated for the label you want might just be that people around you don’t understand the complexity and diversity of experience within that identity

Okay but like I honestly don't give a fuck that Apple and Google have ""nonbinary"" emojis now. I want mandated health insurance coverage for mental health and transitionary care. I want universal self-determination for gender markers on birth certificates and driver's licenses. I want equal access to gender-appropriate or gender-neutral bathrooms so trans kids stop getting urinary infections from holding their bladders in school all day. I want regulations requiring low-income housing and shelters to provide explicitly safe spaces for queer and trans folks who are on the streets.

A goddamn emoji made to resemble a generically androgynous human, as if being nonbinary is some kind of dead-center ""third gender"" that encompasses everything outside a fake-woke cis person's idea of a man or a woman, is not progress or justice.
