Grace's bike of "i ride a bike to work, and it's not for exercise" fame

I really love that the big twist in phm is that Grace didn't choose to go on the mission. I think it's really interesting from a thematic standpoint; all the stuff about sacrifice and free will and what it means to be a coward or a hero or maybe just a human. I also think it's just skillfully done. Grace's amnesia, which should be suspicious, serves a really important narrative function- it allows him, the expert, to learn information in a way that basically forces him to explain it to the audience. Hypothetically, if he did volunteer for the mission and then woke up with all his memories, it would be much more difficult to explain the situation and the world building in a way that feels natural. Flashbacks and recovered memories are a great way to have a character acquire new skills or information to progress the story without having other people to interact with, and without having to build knowledge up from zero. Grace still gets to be ridiculously smart and skilled, but he doesn't start off the story already at maximum capability. So the amnesia makes perfect narrative sense, and there are so many in-universe reasons for it to be natural that your brain probably isn't going to jump to conclusions of foul play.

But the thing that I find the most interesting is the way that this information doesn't actually change anything. Grace has known this whole time that a stranger put him on that spaceship, he just thought that the stranger was himself. He has no memory of deciding to get on the Hail Mary, he starts out with no memories at all. He doesn't know who he is or who he was, so is he really the same person at all? The Grace that wakes up in space did not make the decision to be there, he did not make the decision to sacrifice himself, even if he had actually volunteered. And as he remembered more of himself, became more of himself, I think he was expecting to start recognizing that stranger. I think he thought that eventually he would remember making the choice to sacrifice himself for his planet and suddenly be that hero again. He wouldn't be so scared or confused, because that's who he was, really, a hero, he just couldn't remember quite yet. And then it turns out that he was never going to be the man who volunteered to save the world, because that man never existed. A stranger put him on that spaceship, and that stranger was Eva Stratt not Ryland Grace.

And coming to terms with that, with who he is and was, how he was betrayed, and why it even matters, doesn't actually change anything. Grace still has to save the world, he still has to do the work, he still has to rescue Rocky. A stranger put him on that spaceship, but he knew that since the beginning. There was still work to be done.
