steven + cynthia
Steven thanked the attendant when the tea arrived, and poured the both of them a cup of tea. He turned his china cup in its saucer, and said nothing to Cynthia. He was not acquainted with many things outside of his own interests — it was probably selfish of him to cut himself away from the world, but as far as he saw it, it was his loss for not keeping himself updated with the way the world turned and twisted.
"No harm in asking about something you didn’t know," said the man, adding a cube of sugar to his tea.
"And —" he said, "Perhaps that isn’t so far from the truth. Despite being a champion, you are at the beck and call of a trainer who has managed to triumph against the Elite Four — they win, and they demand to see you, and the League wastes no time in dragging you away from whatever you’re doing at the moment to bring you to your Champion’s Hall."
He smiled.
"Nowadays, I prefer hunting for rare stones to study. I’ll climb even waterfalls to find them."
If she didn't know better she'd almost say that sounded bitter. Steven was as full of mysteries as the things he studied, that much was certain, the champion vacantly wondered if he actually did have anyone close to him. Family? Friends— maybe that was the wrong word, it was colleagues, wasn't it?
She pulled her saucer closer to her person carefully, reaching for a bit of cream to cool it and mix the tastes. People in Kalos often compared tea with milk to dirty water, what a classy lot they were. Cynthia watched the man across from her stir in his sugar with an almost practised motion, every movement he made seemed almost planned and well-thought. Assessed perhaps. That or he didn't have much variety to his day to day schedule.
"The price of a title can be a high one," The thought of Steven climbing a waterfall in anything but a suit almost coaxed foreword a laugh. She was a researcher of sort herself, and would admit she found great interest in the study of stones, but to pursue that alone? She didn't seem able to get a particularly interesting answer out at this rate, so she switched her game plan. Leaning towards the table, Cynthia knitted her fingers beneath her chin and elongated her smile.
"If you invest all your time in your research how are you ever going to get married?"
She herself was not gung-ho on the thought of marriage, but Steven's answer may prove interesting enough.
"Looking for someone?"
"And so my prince arrives. You'll spoil me if you come whenever I call."

Steven glanced at Cynthia, feeling a tad bit guilty. Was he to take her words for the truth, that she thought that he would invite her for a cup of tea if she had come all the way to Hoenn? He smiled, shrugging. Most of his time was no longer spent in Hoenn, and whatever free time he had was spent chasing elusive fossils across mountainsides and caves. Cynthia was an ex-colleague, too —
— but maybe this was why he didn’t have much friends. Some goodwill and friendly gestures on his part would do wonders for his post-retirement social life. An ex-champion had little to do with the current state of the League unless they called upon him to specifically attend meetings as a guest of honor.
He was stirred from his thoughts by a question from his companion. Steven couldn’t say that he hadbothered to keep in contact with anyone from the League — even Wallace was someone he met sparingly. Lance, Alder and Diantha were all just names and faces to him. Not personalities, not more than ex-colleagues.
"I haven’t been the most social," said Steven, "Other than Wallace, you’re the only other champion that I’ve seen in a long while. I’m a retired champion, after all. Nothing more than to spend my time according to how I prefer it."
He glanced at her, then added an afterthought:
"Which apparently means that I haven’t been interacting with anyone.”
The look Steven gave her was measured, perhaps finding her assumption a bit silly or tactless, she could only smile. Perhaps Steven didn't care for the social side of things, that could prove challenging, but Cynthia adored a good challenge. The waitress returned and sat down a steaming pot of tea and a pretty set of cups, she nodded to Cynthia and had the gesture returned before departing once again.
They seemed to be at a dead-end here, perhaps she thought Steven still kept a finger in League business, but it seemed to not be the case. She mindfully watched the steam curl and rise in vapors from the spout, a soothing herbal smell wafting about the table.
"I see." She sighed whimsically, a smile taking up it's place upon her lips once again. Did she even bother mentioning the events that had taken place in Kalos? Surely he had heard about the destruction amidst Lumoise City— but what could he offer besides what she already knew? "I guess that was a silly question. " For a moment she reviewed her companions words, a laugh hovering about her but not escaping her throat
"You make it sound as if being a League Champion has taken all other meaning from your life." She leaned on a pale palm, flaxen hair shifting as she did so. "How do you prefer to spend your time, Steven? Locked in a room with the cold steel you fancy so?" It wasn't uttered in a ruthless way, in fact; it was more curious than anything.
