Manipulating Tumblr/Tumblr Tricks
I’ve been using tumblr for two years (since 2009, and I wrote this in 2011) and am still surprised by what I find/figure out. Missing e is no longer - Get NEW Xkit for Chrome This is more for other little integrated things that is seems a lot of people don’t know tumblr will/can do. NEW: Tag Filtering!
Original tag viewer: In settings/lab turn on “reblog graphs” and now on the bottom of posts in feed you will have a “bubbles” icon click the “bubbles” to see original tags!
LIKES: You can search your tumblr likes with pages just like you can with your dashboard! http://www.tumblr.com/likes/page/*pick a number* - for example my first likes happen to be around http://www.tumblr.com/likes/page/290 - yours may be higher or lower depending. It makes it much easier to find something if you have over 3,000 of them like I do. Want to see someone else’s likes? http://www.tumblr.com/liked/by/callmeblake (only works if they have their likes public though). Just insert their tumblr name at the end of that URL (in place of callmeblake). TAGS: Tags are a wonderful way to organize your blog, and most people don’t seem to realize that if you reblog a post, it will not show up in tumblr search with your tag, but only in your own blog. Only ORIGINAL posts will show up in the main search with your tags so make the most of that. (Edit February 26th, 2017) Avoid ,“/”,“%” and question marks “?”, (right now) “+” and dashes/hyphens “-” tumblr tags don’t know what to do with these and if someone clicks on that tag on your blog they will go nowhere. You can link people to these tagged pages in your sidebar, or in your blog just use http://*yourblogname*.tumblr.com/tagged/*tag you wish to link them to* For example, my Halt and Catch Fire tag looks like this: http://callmeblake.tumblr.com/tagged/halt%20and%20catch%20fire Whoa! “What’s with the %20 you say?”, it’s what tumblr turns the spacebar into, you can also use an underscore and tumblr will still find it. TRACKED TAGS SEARCH LIMIT?: I know it’s frustrating, but you can in fact only have twenty tracked tags before the tags you are tracking will not show new ones beside them anymore. You can still use it to get SEE them, you just have to check them all manually. I also read something last night that said after a certain amount of tags on your post the extra ones will no longer show up in search, don’t know how true it is though. Edit: according to justcantdescribeu “Normally, tumblr only indexes your first 5 tags on any post, and tumblr only indexes tags if it’s on an original post, not a reblog. By indexing, I mean the part where you search up tags on tumblr through the sidebar on your dashboard (tumblr.com/tagged). The sixth and further tags won’t be indexed, but they can still be searched up on your own blog. ” and from yetanothercriminalmindsfanatic“re: tags, first 5 of OP’s post show up in the tracked tags. the first 10 of any post are searchable within a blog. posts retain the first 20. attempt 21 or more, and the extras get swallowed up/disappear after clicking publish/queue/save to drafts. (i’ve had the misfortune of encountering this before)” So to get all that’s tagged on your blog specifically you will have to use something like: http://YOURURL.tumblr.com/tagged/*your tag*“ CHRONO: Want to see tags in order from the first post about that subject, well, first? Add chrono to the end of the tag: http://callmeblake.tumblr.com/tagged/gif/chrono Know you need the third page? http://callmeblake.tumblr.com/tagged/gif/chrono/page/3 DAYPAGES: Find a post and want to know what else was going on on their blog that day? add ”/day/*year*/*month*/*day of month*“ after their tumblr url, it will render them in chronological order, too. For example, this link will show what I posted to my blog on July 3rd, 2011 : http://callmeblake.tumblr.com/day/2011/07/03 SEARCH: No search window on the main on someone’s blog? Type: http://*theirblogname*.tumblr.com/search/*search term* If I do: http://callmeblake.tumblr.com/search/gif on my page I used to get one gif. Edit: Tumblr has improved search quite a bit since I wrote this. So the rest of this section may or may not be relevant anymore. OR : *search term* site:*url* for example, to search the term "gif” on my tumblr: “gif site:callmeblake.tumblr.com” For “gif” for mine, this gets 8 results. However, tumblr’s search is/was quite crap and I suggest using google internal search if you want better results. I get 10 pages of results because it’s just BETTER. We know I have several pages tagged with that. Always try tags first. (Edit: I actually try search now first, since the improvements). Other fun little things: Audio parser- See all the audio posts someone has posted to their blog: http://www.trntbl.me/callmeblake http://whiskie.net/tumblr/callmeblake Tumblr Mosaic Viewer: See only the photo posts from someone’s blog (though I’ve noticed it does not seem to find uploaded photos to text posts). http://tmv.proto.jp/#!/callmeblake http://tmv.proto.jp/tmv2.0/#!/callmeblake (again replace callmeblake with the tumblr user’s you wish to see) And this little Sort by post category search It doesn’t have asks in it though :/ Post catergory search is not working there it seems, but you can use tumblr’s in your archive now (January, 2017)!: http://callmeblake.tumblr.com/archive/filter-by/photo (and it DOES have asks) When I went to write this it seems like I had more, I wonder what I’m forgetting. Edit : Some things I forgot: Theme Recovery: Helpful if you are getting into changing your theme through the html editor and make a mistake, saves the last twenty changes. Audio uploads: Choose a song from soundcloud search and upload it as a draft, go in and replace it with a song from your computer - you can do this multiple times and avoid the “one audio upload a day”. No need to open your blog’s dashboard to see how many followers, messages, number of queued posts and drafts are left alt+click your blog title beside “Dashboard” Obsolete: Reblog long text posts as a whole and not as a link: Clicking the gray “As…” button beside “Reblog Text Post” above the post; select “As Text” to reblog the full body of the original post. Find a post’s source: Hover on the post on your dashboard, notice that the upper-right flap of the white background becomes slightly bent. Click the flap to go to the original post address. See ALL your tags : http://post-theory.com/tumblr-tag-cloud-javascript (this tumblr tag cloud currently not working) Alternate tag cloud: https://drunkonschadenfreude.com/ Know of another little trick that’s made your tumblr experience better? See all your UNTAGGED posts: http://finduntaggedtumblrposts.com/ Drop me a line, please! Blake
I love how the search function on this site is absolute garbage. I can look up a post word for word and I will NEVER find it
Pro tip:
Wanna find a post?
Write out what you remember into a Google search.
After you write that out, end with site:tumblr.com
Google will search for your text on just tumblr
In my experience, it’s way more effective than searching through Tumblr
(you can use site:SITENAME.com to search any site btws)
This usually works but for some reason a lot of posts get indexed on google from a person’s URL based on the posts that were recently reblogged on page 1, meaning that this is only a tiny bit more reliable.
I HAVE a solution to this, you have to write down site:tumblr.com/post “ “
and then write a direct quote (could be a fraction of a sentence) into the quotations, I’ve been doing this for years, and it’s so useful, it works like 99% of the time
(the more popular a post is the more likely you’ll find it)
you’re a genius holy shit
Single A Tumblr Theme
The Single A tumblr theme introduces two new features: the sticky post and featured posts. It is a simple, but super customizable free theme.
Sticky Post
With Single A you have the ability to “stick” one post at the top of your blog regardless of the date and time of the post.
Here’s a video explaining how you create a sticky post.
Let’s say you always want to display at the top of your blog:
An “About Me” post
Your most recent original long-form blog post
An introductory video
A quote that you live by, or
An advertisement
The sticky post feature allows you to do any of these things. With the sticky tag you can highlight whatever you want in your blog’s top spot.
Here’s how you set it up: In the appearance options, define the sticky tag and use that tag on the post that you would like to always display at the top of your blog. The most recent blog post with the sticky tag will always appear at the top.
Featured Posts/Tag
The featured tag enables you to display the five most recent posts of a specific tag in the right sidebar. Similar in layout to the Likes display, the featured tag display allows bloggers to display their five most recent original articles, musicians or music lovers to display their five most recent audio tracks, or photographers to display their five most recent photographs. In short, it’s designed to give you an opportunity to highlight your featured posts long after they have fallen off the first page of your blog.
To enable the featured tag, all you have to do within the appearance options is:
Insert a tag in the featured tag text box
Use that tag on at least one post
Define the label for the featured heading
The sticky post and featured tag are just two of the many features that Single A offers.
You can add social media links; control the color of several styles; upload a custom logo or image; display likes, recent tweets, and group blog features; and incorporate the Disqus commenting platform and Google Analytics.

ALL RESPECT ALL CAPS
Create a Tumblr Page to List Posts by the Tag: Want to show a list of your posts based on a particular tag, such as “tips”? Follow the 12 steps above to create a Tumblr page that redirects to a listing of your blog posts with a specific tag.
Have a new primary blog? Tumblr may not have given you the “redirect page” feature, so Step 6 won’t work for you… yet. You’ll need to follow blogs, like posts and customize your theme to get into Tumblr’s good graces.
I just made a redirect page at http://unwrapping.tumblr.com/tips, which automatically redirects to http://unwrapping.tumblr.com/tagged/tips, to show my posts tagged tips. Why do this? Most themes will display this page link — without tweaking any of your theme’s HTML code — if you set “show a link to this page” on the add page form.
To reach posts with a specific tag on your blog, the URL pattern is: http://[yourblog].tumblr.com/tagged/[yourtag] (omit the brackets).
For multiple-word tags, use either a hyphen or a plus sign between words in the tag URL (such as tumblr-tips or tumblr+themes).
April 8, 2015 Update: Tumblr removed “Customize” from the Dashboard. The “Edit Theme” button on your blog’s home page is the fastest way to reach Tumblr pages.
Historical Minnesota Bikeways Maps
A current Minneapolis bikeways map looks a little different than the ones above, which are undated, but likely date from the late 1970s or early 1980s (The IDS Center–pictured on the cover of the first map–was completed in 1972). Very few off road bike paths existed at the time and the number of unsatisfactory, poor, and fair bikeways were significant.
Today, Minneapolis continues to rank among the top 5 best bike cities. This year Walk Score® rated Minneapolis number one! And protected bikeways are popping up all over the city! Groups like the Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition are working to improve cycling conditions and advocate for an even more bicycle-friendly city.
Each of the above maps also includes a bicycle equipment and packing list. In addition to a first aid kit, bike tools, clothes, and everyday cookware, don’t forget a handkerchief, camera and film, coins for phone calls, and a notepad and pencil. Certainly not the list for your average bike ride, but perhaps something to consider for a cross-country excursion.

When’s the best time to post to Tumblr?
We’ve been consuming the Tumblr firehose for more than a year at Union Metrics. In that time, we’ve processed more than 40 billion Tumblr posts, reblogs and likes! That’s billion. With a B.
We’re often asked when the best time to post to Tumblr is. So to answer that question, we analyzed more than 6 billion Tumblr activites (posts and notes) from the past two months to figure out when Tumblr is most active, and what that activity looks like over time.
We’ve found that weekends are the busiest days on Tumblr and Sunday is the most active day overall. Nights are the busiest times, no matter the day of the week. Post activity is at the highest at 4:00 pm EDT; notes peak at 10:00 pm EDT.
The heatmaps show Tumblr post and note activity; each square shows the intensity of activity during that day and hour. The darker the color, the busier that hour is.
So, what can you do with this info? Well, Tumblr is more active at night, so you’re more likely to have a bigger, more engaged audience then. Particularly later at night, when the highest reblog and like activity happens. But if you want less competition, there’s not much going on in the mornings, so you could give that a shot. If you’re a brand or business, you should consider scheduling content outside standard US business hours, especially on the weekends when more people are spending more time on Tumblr. This is particularly important, because compared to other social networks like Twitter and Facebook, Tumblr is much more active on the weekends.

I’ve always liked this quote. I read it directly after looking at Facebook’s growth figures this morning and it was hard not to draw comparisons between Gandhi’s wisdom and Facebook’s development stages.
Co-incidence? Or am I just insanely bored as I’m lying in bed (a bit ill) and have nothing better to think about? Either way, it’s worth a moment to consider…
First They Ignore You - (2004-2006) I refused to join Facebook at first because my friends were throwing sheep at each other (remember that?) and constantly poking their friends. Growth was pretty slow and was mainly young girls.
Then They Laugh at You - (2006-2008) Facebook starts to become THE platform of choice for people to go to when the want to waste some time, have a laugh and see what their friends are up to. When people realised what an amazing platform it was for connecting everyone you knew, growth accelerated and even brands started taking it seriously.
Then They Fight You (2008-2010) : It’s easy to have a go at the popular kid and Facebook’s insane growth became impossible to ignore. Let the back-lash against this scary privacy-invading social monster begin. Brands worried about PR disasters becoming viral too quickly and large advertisers and agencies (threatened by a new way of doing marketing) started to claim that Facebook (and it’s advertising model) wasn’t sustainable.
Then You Win (2010+) IPO with $104 billion valuation. 1 billion users. 50% active. Most log-in daily (usually on a mobile device). Most popular website of all time. Constantly innovating. $1.6 billion in revenue in Q4 of 2012 - mainly due to the explosion of mobile advertising. Who’s ignoring them now…???
