I'm a displaced Texan who now resides in news junkie friendly DC. I love off-color humor, ordering "a glass of your finest cheap white wine" and fad ideas for how to stave off love-handles now that I'm 30. I also love random "sister, can we talk?" emails. So send one to me at cheapwhitewine at gmail dot com. var _gaq = _gaq || []; _gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-29361624-1']); _gaq.push(['_trackPageview']); (function() { var ga = document.createElement('script'); ga.type = 'text/javascript'; ga.async = true; ga.src = ('https:' == document.location.protocol ? 'https://ssl' : 'http://www') + '.google-analytics.com/ga.js'; var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(ga, s); })();
obama has taken a funeral selfie, so our work here is done
I’d intended for the post below to be the final one here, but then this just happened at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service—not exactly a funeral, to be fair, but I’ll just go ahead and take credit for the whole thing. Thank you, world, and good night!
I love flawed characters, male or female, and I only want to talk about flawed characters, really, in what I do. I think likability is bullshit -- we are complicated beings, sometimes we're likable and sometimes we're not... and sometimes we fuck up radically.
Orange is the New Black (and Weeds) creator Jenji Kohan in Indiewire.
A pro-choice woman testifying against a restrictive abortion bill is escorted away after pointing out that one of the bill's sponsors-- Dr. Donna Campbell who ALWAYS makes reference to being a doctor-- is "just an ophthalmologist" whose knowledge of reproductive health is only helpful if a person gets herpes in their eyes.
Of just as equal note, this testifier gets to the heart of what so many of us feel-- that this whole process has been a sham; that the Texas legislature has no regard for improving health care or education access (in fact, quite the opposite); that women's voices are being ignored and demeaned.
People ask me, “If you could be whatever you wanted to be, what would you be?” My first answer is not “a great lawyer.” It is, “I would be a great diva.” But I totally lacked that talent, so the next best thing is the law.
Radio interview, New York Public Radio station WQXR’s “Operavore" program (Feb. 2, 2013) (In Italian, a diva is a celebrated opera singer.)
Rick Perry, governor (dictator?) of Texas, for declaring that it's too bad Wendy Davis hasn't learned from her own example of being a young, single mother.
Really? Rick Perry on learning lessons?
Interestingly, every person in Texas has heard that rumor that Perry plans to run for president again. Because apparently humiliating himself in 2012 taught him nothing.
Can we do a roll call for all the Wellesley peeps on Tumblr? Just reblog this if you go to/went to Wellesley. If you are inclined, you can add your name and year but it’s fine if you don’t.
In the tabloid press, so much is written about benefits abuses - young women having babies to get state hand-outs. But conference, that's enough on Kate Middleton.
Dave Prentis, the head of the UK's largest labor union
(Side note-- apparently his joke has pissed some Brits off.)
Kagan read aloud from the House Judiciary Committee report on DOMA. “Congress decided to reflect and honor of collective moral judgment and to express moral disapproval of homosexuality,” she said, quoting the report.
It turns out my cleanse is still unbelievably terrible. I spent a good hour and a half going through restaurant food photos on Yelp. NEW LOW?
I've also taken to talking at everyone about my cleanse. And emailing old friends with life updates that are pretty much solely devoted to my raw food cleanse.
One more day of misery. And then I can eat stuff that isn't terrible.
But that's why we take risks, right? Otherwise we'd be living in our hometowns pushing out babies, getting sassy midwestern haircuts and talking about our "hubbies".
