all empires must fall, all kings must die — but the club remains.
it is with a heavy heart that the admin team has decided to put CHECKMATEHQ ON AN INDEFINITE HIATUS.
we sincerely apologize to all our current members who have been so supportive and enthusiastic to watch the club's story unfold along with us — but we've lost a few of our writers and haven't had enough new applicants come in to maintain our numbers, which ultimately led to the recent dip in activity. we completely understand that this is just the nature of roleplay! despite these challenges, we'd like to think we held strong, if not by the effort of the admin team, then certainly through the mammoth effort of our lovely members! we've lasted longer than most roleplays in the current day, with almost daily ic posts throughout the whole two and a half months we've been running! for this, we'd like to personally thank each and every one of you for your continued dedication, members past and present!
when we first launched CHECKMATEHQ, we were admittedly nervous about how our dual timeline and elaborate canons would be received. but seeing the level of enthusiasm and creativity from all of you has filled us with hope for the future of the roleplay community! it's clear that there is still room for complex worldbuilding and dedicated writing. knowing that each of you put in just as much effort into your muses and threads as we did into conceptualizing this premise reassures us that this chapter, while closing, is one we can be proud of. we're so happy with everything we've achieved together and cannot wait to see what the future holds!
don't think of this as a goodbye — think of this as a see you later! we know we'll cross paths again one day, whether it be a new and improved CHECKMATEHQ or in a different community entirely — this time, as members eagerly watching other stories unfold alongside you!
while we've crafted our lovely canons, we wholeheartedly believe that each of you has made them your own, so we encourage you to further develop your muses and even carry on with your threads if you wish to!
thank you for everything! we'll miss this and most importantly, we'll miss all of you! we know it in our hearts that we'll see all of you again, though — after all, you never really leave the king's club ❤️
it's brutal out here, ain't it? sorry bud, but you didn't make the cut.

about the event, what are the results? who did best and those rankings! don't want to overstep anything
hello, great question and we're really sorry we took so long to get to this! in terms of who was crowned winner among each competing duo, we're leaving it entirely up to you! that said, there are certain factors that you may wish to consider before crowning the winner. the obvious factor to consider is how good your muses may be at hunting not necessarily in general, but in comparison to the initiate that they're competing with! more than that though, who are the evaluating chessmasters joining them on their hunts? as detailed in the event, the evaluating chessmasters are in charge of vouching for your muses' kills, and while your muse may be better at hunting either through experience or more likely a stroke of luck — can they trust the evaluating chessmaster(s) accompanying them to be honest? or have the odds been stacked against your muse from the very beginning?
of course, that's a lot of power to hand to just one chessmaster, hence why the ritual was broken up into two hunts with two chessmasters evaluating the same duo! additionally, while the evaluating chessmasters are in charge of vouching for each kill, they are not the ones with the final say as to who wins and who loses! rather, at the end, the chessmasters will gather and state their case, and the winner is decided by the majority vote of all chessmasters present — of course, minus the chessmasters who nominated them or their competitor! for this reason, we encourage all initiates to plot with all chessmasters, not just the ones evaluating your muses!
additionally, we'd like to stress that this is just one of twenty rituals! it's canon that by the end of the initiation process, all playable initiates have successfully won their seat, so realistically, how your muses fare for this particular ritual doesn't have much bearing in the grand scheme of things. they could very possibly lose in this ritual, but win in all else! have fun with it, and please don't feel like your muses need to win this ritual in order to win their seat!
If there’s anything anyone knows about Noh Hyungseo, it’s going to be that shit-eating smile. Today, he pairs it with gesturing arms and a laugh, too chipper for daybreak.Â
“Beautiful morning, isn’t it?” He trods towards the boot of his car, parked so it faces initiates and chessmasters alike, each one bleary-eyed and huddled together in the cold of Baegaksan National Park. “No better time to ring in the hunting season.”
It’s typical of Hyungseo, how he never waits long enough for the bated breath. Two taps on the boot of his car and on cue, it pops open. Hidden beneath is the startling pile up of air rifles, ammo, and backpacks. The sight invites whispers to break out amongst the crowd, but Hyungseo steals the protest on everyone’s minds with a single sentence paired with a taunting brow, “Of course, if you’re too much of a coward, you can always resign.”
The silence invites the smile. “Thought so,” he mutters, loud enough for everyone to catch his self-satisfaction. “So here’s the deal: ten tracks, each leading to southeast of the mountain. We take a rifle each, and in three hours, we hunt everything in our sight. The greater the kill, the better the score.”
He leans into his boot, picks up a gun, and he’s almost careless, the way he juggles its weight in his hands. “Find your competition, pick a chessmaster, and get to it.”
He throws the gun towards the first initiate in front of him and chuckles at the way they catch it, how it betrays their apprehension. Hyungseo picks up another rifle from the boot, and he digs the stock into the ground. “First round starts at seven.”
If there’s anything anyone knows about Noh Hyungseo, it’s that he’ll make sure no one ever forgets him or that shit-eating smile.

event details this event is set on november 5th, 2016, the day of noh hyungseo’s ritual. where this ritual is concerned, you may explore anything leading up to this event, during, and their reactions after! context tip! the hunting grounds on which this ritual is held was once popular for hunts, but had been closed off back in 2015 due to various reports of wild animal attacks. for safety reasons, hunting on these grounds is now considered illegal and, if caught, can incur a hefty fine. additionally, noh hyungseo has obtained air rifles from unknown origins that all initiates and chessmasters are expected to carry. chessmasters are not expected to participate in the hunt, but given the dangers of the grounds, they have been armed to protect themselves. reviewing gun laws in south korea! according to south korean law, the youngest that an individual can apply for a gun license for hunting purposes is the international age of 20 years old. the application is a very long, expensive, and stringent process. additionally, guns must be kept at the police station at all times and may only be retrieved during the hunting season between the start of november to the end of february. due to the laws surrounding this, it is likely that the majority of muses would not have had a gun license — or even know how to shoot a gun! — prior to this ritual. this is with the exception of men who have served in the army, though note that the earliest that they may enlist for conscription is the international age of 18 years old. on average, the length of conscription is two years.
ooc info this is a two-part event — this first part is set in 2016. please tag all posts as #cm:prey. the second part of this event will be set in 2024 and is scheduled to be released on 29 september, 8pm pst. all event starters may be posted up until 13 october, 8pm pst and should be wrapped up by 27 october, 8pm pst. participation is optional, though it is understood that your muses would have been present at this event. admin care tip! we understand and respect that there may be individuals who may feel uncomfortable with the topic of guns explored in the first part of this event. please note that participation is optional. currently, none of our members have informed us of any triggers relating to guns, but if this changes, please let us know! to be on the safe side, we ask that you tag all threads exploring guns in any level of detail with #tw guns. if you would still like to participate but prefer not to thread, we suggest releasing a list of headcanons detailing how your muse has navigated this event! the level of detail is up to your discretion. a list of 5+ headcanons will count as 1 thread activity and can be claimed twice in this event: once for the first part in 2016, and another for the second part in 2024.
thank you for your interest and we hope you enjoy part one of this event! we’d also like to wish everyone a belated happy 2 months with us — you’ve all been such a pleasure! if you have any questions or concerns, we are happy to receive them through the askbox or dms!
wait till you hear about this next nominee: BYUN HYUNWOO, born on the 29th of DECEMBER, 1995 and bears a striking resemblance to NAM JOOHYUK. they’re a FIRST year BACHELOR OF MEDICINE student and IS THE TOP RANKED STUDENT IN HIS YEAR — impressed yet? rumor has it they’re hoping to be a SURGERY RESIDENT, but personally, i think they should aim a little higher — something like the king’s club, for one. now, that suits them a little more, don’t you think? guess we’ll just have to see if they’ve got the talent for it in our upcoming recruitment round.
BYUN HYUNWOO IS THE KING'S CLUB'S 2019 WHITE ROOK.
his struggle for acceptance from seoul’s elite had never really been a priority of his back then. coming from humble beginnings with his father multiple failed business ventures, all that hyunwoo had seen was the hard work that was put in to try and make things work — from shoe cleaning services, laundry shops, restaurants and everything in between. add that to being raised in a family filled with love and adoration for one another, such a tight knit family that would’ve had those elites jealous or even stunned that such a family could even exist outside the movies.Â
seeing how his parents struggled and worked for the family once inspired hyunwoo to work just as much as they do. from his academics to even his extracurriculars, shaping himself to become this golden child that his parents could brag to their friends. after all, he figured that if his parents were trying to raise them up from the possibility of drowning in debt, this was the one way that he could keep them afloat.
the byuns would continue their climb to the top of the ladders, being tossed back down to the ground with each struggling business and at the brink of them being completely wrung out comes along the life-changing idea that his father came up with: gaining money off of what people called love, or lust, or whatever the hell was in between. it had been their final shot, the last loan that the bank was willing to give them and who would’ve guessed that was all that they needed? everyone was thrilled with the load out that they got from it, even hyunwoo. after all, the more money his family made, the more opportunities opened up for them and it wasn’t just moving out of their bungalow house to better neighborhoods. it meant getting into better schools, needing to worry about scholarships and actually being able to create his own dreams. he had been so proud, and so content with how his life was turning out to be — until the king’s club, at least.
the king’s club was one that he had simply heard of as rumors, never really believing that he would even get a shot at it with just hearing what it implied. surprised was practically an understatement when he had been recruited and being forced head to head with hyungseo, who was practically a shoo in. it leaves him questioning why he was chosen for it, but at that time he figured that maybe, just maybe these people recognized his father’s efforts to rise out of the ashes with the booming chain of love motels. spoiler alert: it wasn’t that and he learned fast that he was nothing more but a filler, a stand in so hyungseo’s acceptance in the club wouldn’t raise any suspicions.Â
the discrimination with him had been so evident the second he stepped in for initiation, like he was thrown off to the deep end. whispers about how embarrassing his father was for gaining his wealth over love motels, laughing about how much of a joke his mere presence was there, talking about he could never truly be one of them would make hyunwoo want to prove them wrong. he would surprise them as he pours 110% of his efforts into every process of the initiation, hoping and praying that he could get in and show it to everyone’s faces that they weren’t any better than he was. suppose fate, the gods or whatever above was in his favor as his opponent’s death came to play. granted, he wasn’t relieved with such tragedy, but at some point he wondered if that was his opportunity to prove them wrong. he may have hoped that this was how his family was finally going to be taken seriously, but it only took a toll on him as rather than being accepted he was further ostracized from the rest.
one would’ve thought that with how he was raised, hyunwoo would’ve brushed off the jokes and stood up for his family, but it ended up with him wanting to do nothing with the family business. from studying business administration when he first got in, he took his stellar grades and opted to shift programs and take up medicine instead. he wanted to do the complete opposite of what his family started it, choose a more prestigious title so no one could speak badly about him again. he used none of his family’s newfound connections, nor did he seek help as he slowly distanced himself from them to try and break away from the reputation that was engrained with the family name. he wanted to do anything that would help stop the talking, and to be taken seriously, to be accepted by the people that thrusted him into this club.
as the years passed, hyunwoo thought that he might be able to brush off the talk about him and his family, make a name for himself. unfortunately, that would be no more than just a mere fantasy of his. just after his graduation, it proved that the club’s perception of him would haunt him just the same as how his family gained their wealth. none of the benefits that it could’ve given him would come through as he struggled to find a hospital to even take him in. one rejection after the other, coming up with the most imaginative excuses like how it just so happened that someone applied earlier than he did, only to find out that there were a few more slots left. they just didn’t think a man of his prestige deserved it. his frustration, as one might imagine, grew to a point where he continues to distance himself away from his family to tame the demons that screamed at him from within.
no alcohol, nor wallowing away would silence his mind, nor the minds of others, but by some miracle — a brand new hospital had been desperate to take in surgical residents for training. just like him, this hospital had nothing to offer to the top tier of the society. there were already big named hospitals that everyone would clamor to try and get into. as much as hyunwoo dreamed, this was the first step he’d take to finally scrubbing his father’s shame off his being, or at least that’s what he thought. after all, a new hospital didn’t mean that none of seoul’s royalty wouldn’t seep their claws into it and besides, what’s a faster gossip mill than a hospital?Â

the world building is incredible and i’d love to join, is there a particular skeleton that members would like to see taken up? they’re all great so i’d appreciate some input to help me decide.
hello and thank you so much for your kind words! it's messages like these that motivate us to keep pushing forth! as for canons, we'd really love to see hyungseo's ex-girlfriend, Rxa8, filled as we believe that she is one of the more central canons to the premise! alternatively, Rh1 has always been our personal favorite as we've always felt that his devil may care attitude serves as an excellent contrast to the other type a-esque members of the club! members, if there are any particular canons you'd like to see filled, please comment below to help the anon out!
wait till you hear about this next nominee: MIN YURIM, born on the 18th of MARCH, 1996 and bears a striking resemblance to JUNG SOOJUNG. they’re a FIRST year BACHELOR OF POLITICAL SCIENCE student and PUBLISHED RESEARCHER — impressed yet? rumor has it they’re hoping to be a SOCIALITE, but personally, i think they should aim a little higher — something like the king’s club, for one. now, that suits them a little more, don’t you think? guess we’ll just have to see if they’ve got the talent for it in our upcoming recruitment round.
MIN YURIM IS THE KING'S CLUB'S 2019 QUEEN.
after being served the divorce papers, yurim forgets how to sleep. she forgets a lot of things that people typically don’t have to remember, like eating or making conversation. her body becomes an alien device, detached from her mind in a way that can only register as vaguely disconcerting in her fugue state. when she tries, with colossal effort, to resume her life in the following days, people notice. it’s very inconvenient having to assuage their concern and avoid their suspicion, because what yurim doesn’t forget is how desperately she wants the reason behind her behavior change to remain secret. she eventually cancels appointments, flakes out of meetings, fades out of view. it’s uncharacteristic, but it’s the only way to postpone the questions. the folder had been sitting untouched on her office’s desk for a week by the time she hears herself cry for the first time in months.
she’s a well tailored success story by the time she enrolls into university, sitting in practiced, smiling humility as guests extol her accomplishments to her parents at dinner parties. somewhere between admiring and bitterly envious, they gawk and fawn at her prestigious schools, polyglotism, piano expertise, precocious publishing history, and most importantly, her beauty, like they’re trophies put on display for their astonishment alone. she sips on sparkling water and barely touches her plate all evening, looking angelic in her gown. on their rides home, they’ll compare their children to her and defend their own ego by minimizing the monumental effort it takes for yurim to be the condescending little bitch who acts like she’s too good for their sons. but, to yurim, the effort is everything. the strain of it, the crushing weight, the scars it etches on the skin – never to be seen, but constantly felt. she’s a series of sacrifices carefully tended over the years, the virgin on the altar that commands the sort of adoration reserved for the sacred.
the big project of her undergrad years is to find a suitor. that is the driving force behind the clubs and the socials she joins, the reason for many unfinished hors d'oeuvres and champagne flutes. it’s the one trophy she’s after. yurim thinks she’s efficient about her approach, putting herself in the rooms where the most eligible bachelors would vie to be and optimizing her prospects through careful analysis and loaded questions. but even when an eventual infatuation would carry her through a number of dates and into some semblance of rapport, she’d find herself frustrated with the expectations placed on her to make a relationship out of the dinners and holidays spent together. by the time she realizes she should be attending the graduate parties instead, she finds herself unwittingly committed to king’s club and the power play its members amuse themselves with. it isn’t terrible distraction, but her priorities don’t waver.
she isn’t blindsided or even surprised. he’d moved out of their house months ago, an argument bleeding into another despite how tirelessly yurim attempted to deescalate the situation. there were times she felt out of her mind, disoriented by his dedication to maneuvering every reassuring sentiment out of her mouth into an accusation. theirs had been a good marriage, she thinks. she was graceful in her role as the companion, the shoulder on which he could lie at the end of the day. she was an abundance of time and warmth, waiting on his calls. he’d listen to her and guide her the way she wanted to be guided, become the mentor she could disappear behind. when she tosses and turns in her bed waiting for sleep that doesn’t come, she racks her brain to spot the precise moment where their agreement was off the table, what she had done to deserve his callousness. he’s the only person she ever begged for, and she never hesitated before prostrating herself at his feet, never thought to spare herself a shred of dignity. if she gets the choice, she’d prefer her humiliation to be private.
her father always says she should marry a doctor, introducing her to families in the tech business before he’d bring home his own circle to meet her. he doesn’t want her to marry someone like him, he tells her over a gentle chuckle. she's been an adoring daughter since she was born, never quite sure how to abandon the myth little girls are taught to make of their fathers. he never refrained from painting himself as a hero in her eyes, speaking with gravity of duty and hard work, the weight of effort. despite never having a strong presence from either of her parents in her daily life, it was always easier to forgive dad. work seemed urgent and necessary when it came to him – it was always explained to her that it was her father who provided for the family – but she always carried the suspicion that her mother chose work over her. it’s her father’s words, leaking beyond closed doors, that she echoes when she calls her mother’s career futile, projects her own sense of ego when she assumes it is out of spite toward her that her mother doesn’t have time for her. when her father’s smile turns a little hesitant, a little wrong as she replies she’d be honored to find a husband like him, yurim still blames her mother.
he likes that he was the one to find her, and yurim allows him to believe that. she’s in her junior year when they start dating, and she’s moved into his apartment before she graduates. she puts in the work to make him interested, and he continues to fall in love with her. she’s in love with the way his arms fit around her waist, with the gifts he chooses for her, with how she looks next to him. they’re married as soon as she graduates, moving into a house of his choosing and adjusting to the schedule of his work. she enjoys staying in the back seat and being his to handle, it’s a novel sense of release from all the work she’s done to get here. he concedes when she suggests she should finish her studies and attend law school, they agree it would reflect well on his career. as soon as that’s done, she is the one who chooses to step away from a potential career to lend her image to his political growth. she runs non-profits and builds relationships with the other wives who look down on her for her youth and puts her face out for the public on his behalf. all her life, she’s built herself into an asset, and she makes herself available for him to use.
there are no pictures of her father smiling at her wedding.
it’s not just the dread and the shame, it’s the absence of the anticipation she’s known for the past months. a ribbon that threads through every muscle, every joint in her body, pulling her taut, paralyzed, and one day it simply breaks. the walls of their empty house expand around her, she starts noticing the vacant rooms, made for guests that they never entertain and children they’ll never have, and how long it takes to walk from the kitchen to her bedroom until she just stops bothering. she knows the woman he plans on replacing her with, the kind of girl that would follow her around in school or university, half the accolades and still calling herself a peer. it doesn’t hurt that he’d lust after someone younger, yurim isn’t obtuse enough to gloss over the unsavory details of their own relationship. what hurts is that he thinks, really thinks, that he could find a worthy replacement.
when news of the divorce finally go public, it’s after yurim files a counter suit with evidence of his infidelity. she returns to work not because getting the upper hand makes her less broken, but because she needs to be seen. her suffering needs to be beautiful and tragic and witnessed. getting the upper hand doesn’t fix her, but it relieves her of the burden of humiliation. instead, she reprises her role as the weeping saint, bearing her stigmata on ivory skin, placid through turmoil. another sacrifice offered for the highest boon, the one found not in a man but in her own image: veneration.

KANG YOURA IS THE KING'S CLUB'S 2016 BLACK BISHOP.
“what will an angel say that the devil wants to know?” youra’s lexicon has always been archaic—irreproachable and haughty in the way she speaks down to others, with a hatred that seems to bellow from her stomach, a part of her meant only for nourishment. even as a child, her wit was both facile and cogent. she could skillfully run verbal circles around her grandfather during hypothetical arguments, besting not only him but also the thousands of his blue-collar workers who had to study to be bright. youra, on the other hand, was simply born bright. "a girl far above all the rest," he would laugh, carefully tucking a lollipop into her small hand. apple flavored, of course.
when she was still just a girl, youra found her father’s mistress sauntering about—ripped stockings and red nail polish, the only details that remain in her memory now. out of curiosity, she asked the woman if she was a harlot. the woman laughed, amused. "someone’s been ahead in their scripture readings," she teased before confessing, "i’m your father’s lover. your mother is simply his wife—a fleshly distinction a god-fearing woman like her can’t quite understand." then, almost musing to herself, she added, "that’s why men love whores." youra, who once believed nothing holier than the communion between man and wife, felt something shift inside her. to be told that lust could subvert loyalty, that desire could outweigh devotion—it unsettled her. she knew then it was easier to surrender to sin than to fight it. suffering could feel religious if done right.
youra sees that same woman again—this time dusting off her father’s desk, bringing him supper, folding her sunday best on saturday evenings. she watches her closely, studying the grace in her hips, the curves of her body, the way her lips twist and pucker when she speaks to him. what power did this woman possess that could rival her father’s duty as a clergyman? youra’s world was ruled by power: the power of men, the power of god, the power of her own predestined life. how could one menial woman challenge all of that? could youra ever be a woman like her? a woman who wielded the gifts of god to roguishly fool men? had she already been preened in her image? none of it made sense.
that woman’s face haunted her, appearing wherever debauchery thrived. she saw her superimposed on the scum who somehow slipped through the untasteful rituals that the king’s club so enjoyed. it was here, amidst this corruption, that she first encountered real pushback against the ideology she had covertly formed. she was called "dated," with terms like “bible-beater” thrown her way. the more the world around her grew foreign, the more youra clasped her hands in prayer, desperate for answers. what god, she wondered again and again, could she possibly pray to for understanding?
she sees that woman’s face in the mirror these days. promptly, she found herself swept up in the commercial side of her grandfather’s legacy. of course, it was his idea. a tongue as serpentine as youra’s shouldn’t go dull due to disuse. the “holier-than-thou” act has lost its authenticity with her, but she’d rather repent in silence than show that she’s got bloody hands herself now.
