I found myself regularly, checking Soundclouds and Bandcamps of completely obscure and completely awesome musicians who i had become friends with over time, happy to see so many young people building a port folio of demos and attempts at song writing. I wanted to compile a compilation to celebrate the independence in writing solo music, taking the disadvantage of not being able to make a band of stuff and turning it into a dedicated solo venture. The loner-hood of the solo musician is one to be respected, there is strength in it.

So. We all thought it wouldn't happen, that you'd never see them again, that they'd vanish into the passages of time. Well think again, because Maths are doing a tour, the only tour this year, and they've got a new album coming out as well. This. is. very. exciting. stuff.

MATHS (SOUTH) - for some, screamo was a genre of music held complete in a time bubble between an early point in the 90s and an early point in the 00s, never to be disturbed again or understood in the same way. Maths were born about 6-8 years after that period had ended, and not only embody the spirit and ferocity of classic screamo, but could have only been born in and around the late 00s. Thrash influenced hardcore was thriving (the legit Holy Roar roster), adding to their sound, encouraging more concise and intelligible blasts, builds and atmosphere to their sound. They have the wit and passion of screamo but the hard hit and might of hardcore to round their sound off.  It'll be good to be able to see them live again.

My Cassette Collection #9 - WASHED OUT "HIGH TIMES"

I remember about the age of 17, I used to visit Birmingham a lot with a few friends, wander about, be lil' losers and giggle or something. One of the said friends, a girl who lived a few cities out and subsequently discarded me from her life when she discovered university (not bitter), showed us a store called COW, a second hand store, or "vintage" if yr that way inclined. I remember the experience of going in there for the first time, it was oddly mystifying whilst at the same time being quite alluring and otherworldly. I'd never really come across the concept of reusing old clothing from other people, least of all clothes with such loud + colourfully expressive patterns, styles and textures, but it soon became something I grew to like a lot. Couple that with the music playing over the stereos of this large, old, yellow and brick warehouse lot, I hadn't experienced anything like it. The music they were playing was a lot of weird, trippy and pulsy 'old sounding' electronic music, the kind of music you'd expect to be in New York Ripper or some low-budget Blacksploitation film. 

Years pass by, and that sound still resonated with me but i never really had a movement, source or mp3 to link it to, until I started delving into Pitchfork's Forkcast around 2010. I discovered a heck of a lot of weird and wonderful artists, occasionally filtered under the umbrella of an emerging genre 'chillwave'. One of which, which seemed to encapsulate the sound and remind me most of that old second hand store was Washed Out and the song "BELONG". The lofi productions style, the bleachy harmonies, the reverbed drums and the weird synth all added towards this feeling that I had been searching for. 

The pulsing and shake drums and the introduction to shaky tape ambience really addd a different flavour to my musical interests from then on, and I felt i had discovered something new and exciting that didn't remind me of everything else, which was shit and normal. 

Eventually I managed to get a copy of this and i was v glad i did as it's one of my favourite EPs.

FFO: 8BIT/EMO/QUEER MUSIC "ESH, the sound of existentialist queer 8-bit driven pop with emo delivery. Each track serves as an anecdote, a somewhat reactionary situation to another event - homophobia, youthful apathy, growing up in a religious setting, an ex-lover doing better than you post-relationship, wanting to fit in, the pressure of being expected of by elders. The delivery is fast, and the emotions are honest, but the entire sound is a concise, and yet detailed musical diary of a young man, trying to find enough energy to make it through the day." This is a new tape I'm putting out on Monday. 5 short tracks, an EP about 6 minutes in length, but full of life, colour and character.

My Cassette Collection #7: MC12 A COMPILATION 

This was a tape i picked up at a distro that was at a gig I was putting on. It's really cool, full of really intense, rad lofi punk music. Honestly, I haven't listened to it as much as I should have. Will make it a point to listen to it more.

My Cassette Collection #6

From my late teens, I have been incredibly invested in music that has a lot of revealing elements. I found myself to be quite a self-deprecating, double-thinking, sometimes self-hating youth and those feelings are quite isolating, and leave you searching for people to connect with who also feel very similar to yourself. In music, you can find connection between yourself and other people over very similar feelings and is one of the primary reasons why people bond over music. There were times that anxiety, depression, frustration with my existence peeked so high that it was music like OLD GRAY that helped me sort of mourn, exorcise and let go of my feelings just long enough for it to have mattered. 

I've always thought that most music represents a mood of sorts, and with screamo/skramz/post-screamo/powerviolence/whatever, it always struck me as music to release the pent up feelings we have inside us, like a caged bird. Bands like this always made me wanna start a band like it and express myself in a similar way, but it didn't quite happen and I find it hard to truly scream but I like that I have music like this to help me through emotionally rough times.

This album in particular is "An Autobiography", but i will list my favourite songs of theirs, in general.
