It was Saturday morning. You had spent the night at Jos’ after school yesterday. You and Jos were the first ones awake since you got to bed early last night due to a headache. Margot was busy and left the house way earlier, Rob on the other hand, was home. “Want some breakfast?” Jos asked while you followed her down the stairs. It creaked, the skies were gloomy, casting an eerie atmosphere throughout the house, heck, the city.
It was the norm, but given the recent events. You were shaky, Jos was on edge…worried. For you, for herself.
“I’m…not that hungry, Jos.”
Her brows knit together in worry. “Is it the headache?”
“Everything is the headache.”
Jos bit back a sigh, kissing your cheek, “You’re okay.”
“No.” You chuckled, “No one is okay. W— all the girls are being treated like freaks with this Power. Still. Though that just explains why we even got it in the first place. They can’t stand seeing us being in control.”
“We’ll work through this, together. Don’t focus on anything else or anyone else. Just yourself, just us. There’s a lot going on in the world and you can’t change most of it. Don’t look at the news anymore, it’s not doing your anxiety any good.”
“The news is everywhere, Jos.” You sat down at the island, chewing on your nails. Then, you got a zap and quickly pulled away, seething. “Are you hurt?”
“No.” You huffed, resting your hands on the countertop, “Just startled, that’s all.”
“Good. What do you want for breakfast?”
“Anything, I guess.” You answered lacklusterly.
Jos decided on French Toast with some fruit. One of your favourites. She hoped it would cheer you up, even just a little bit. You were happy just watching her work in the kitchen. Until…she turned in the induction stove and you stood up. “Actually— Jos, maybe…you shouldn’t— you shouldn’t touch an electric stove?”
“I’ll be fine.” She assured, but you weren’t too sure about it. Several weeks ago, it was the microwave. Then the stereo in Rob’s car. Then she accidentally zapped her brother on the eye while fighting over the remote. And now, you reached over to her hand to get it off the stove but it was too late. Of course it was, she didn’t know how to control the Power yet and hurt herself. Since your hand was already on hers, you got hurt too. Her eyes went wide and she gasped, “Shit. I told you I’ll be fine, why did you— God.” At least nothing blew up this time.
“I’m fine, I’m fine.” You took a look at your hand, nothing wrong with it. It just felt like static shock, but somewhat more intense. If anything, this was an improvement. “Are you sure?” She hurriedly took your hand to see for herself. “Babe, yes.” You let out a chuckle at how worried she looked. “I’m sorry, I just— I don’t know that happened.”
“Me neither, but it’s fine. I’m not hurt. It just felt like static shock.” You told her, “Watch the french toast.”
“Right.” Jos sighed, pressing a kiss to your hand then flipped the egg-dipped slice of brioche over in the pan.
“I heard something. Are you girls okay?” Rob came down the stairs.
“I got zapped on the stove trying to get it on. Her hand was on mine, but we’re fine.”
“Sure?”
“Yeah.” You nodded, “All good.”
“Well, good to see you girls keeping busy on a weekend and doing something.”
“Dad, you want some french toast?”
“Not too much of a sweets guy, but yeah, I’ll take some.” He shrugged, sitting down at the island with you, “And you, no más café para ti.”
“Ay, noooo.” You held your coffee-filled mug protectively with both hands. “I need my coffee.”
“All that caffeine is probably why you have so much trouble falling asleep. And the lack of sleep is why your headaches have been at an all-time high.” He told you while reaching for a mug and the coffee pot.
You narrowed your eyes at him playfully.
“Point taken.” He laughed, “But I did a surgery last night— lasted till early this morning. I deserve my coffee.”
“You just got home?” Jos blinked, slightly taken aback.
“Got home around 5am. It is now 8:30, so minus the time I took for a shower? I got a whopping three hours of sleep.”
“So what are you doing up? Go back to sleep.” You muttered, taking a swig of coffee and putting your mug down.
“I tried.” He laughed, Jos put a plate of french toast in front of him. He walked up to the fridge to get the bottle of syrup and box of blueberries. “You want blueberries?” He asked, looking over his shoulder at you.
“No.” You muttered, accepting your plate of food from Jos, grabbing a banana off of the bunch in front of you on the island.
“Alright, then. You want strawberries too, Jos?”
“Sure, yeah.”
After breakfast, you went back up to Jos’ room quietly. “Niña, stop. Wait a second.” Rob stopped you before you started walking up the stairs.
“Yeah?”
“Are you alright? Do you have a headache again?”
“Again? No. I’ve been having it for two days.” You told him, biting back a scoff.
“That’d be a migraine.”
“So…”
“So, get some rest. Shut the curtains and lay down, sleep.” He suggested. “Does the coffee help?”
“Actually, yeah.”You arched a brow, “Anyway, I’m gonna go take a shower because the heat helps too. Jos, excuse me.”
“Be careful, babe.”
A little after you’d gone into the bathroom and started the shower, Jos was still in the kitchen with Rob, drinking coffee and chatting. Izzie and Matt were away at camp for a few more days, so the house has been quieter than she was used to now in a long time. “She gets those a lot, huh?”
“Stress is a big trigger for her migraines, I’ve noticed. And with what’s going on lately? All over the world?” Jos glanced at him, “It’s been some time since we got The Power, it’s a good thing, y’know? Self defence? There are so many bad people around, some just blend in. Why do they feel so threatened if they’ve got nothing to hide?”
“Some people, some guys…they just don’t like seeing girls in power, in charge. Because to them, girls are supposed to be the weak ones. But that’s not true. And, I know you’re still figuring out how to control the Power, that’s fine. It hasn’t been long since you got it, it takes time. Babies don’t learn how to walk in a day, Jos. Go easy on yourself for that.”
“Thanks, Dad.” Jos smiled and gave him a hug, “I’m gonna make her some more coffee.”
“Of course.” He returned the smile, “And, make sure she doesn’t go overboard on the coffee. And get her to try other stuff to help if meds don’t do the trick.”
“I’ll make sure.” Jos chuckled, “It’s…weird being in a house this quiet so far. I haven’t experienced this in years. Matt and Izzie would always be squabbling, or me and him these days.”
“Enjoy it while it lasts.” He laughed too, patting her on the back, “I heard from Mom what happened at her house. It’s good she’s confiding in you and knowing that staying here for awhile would be better for her. Especially with that migraine now.”
“They fight all the time, her mom and dad. About the same things, over and over again. It’s stupid, and annoying how they refuse to hold themselves accountable and change. For her, for her siblings.”
“You might want to talk to her about spending most of her time here instead of home. Get her away from that environment, it’s a huge stressor. She’ll always be in pain if she stays at home.”
“I’ve been thinking about it.” Jos nodded solemnly, “It’s hard to get her to prioritise herself. I’m surprised she even talked to Mom. But it’s good. I’ll talk to her later.”
“Good. Hoping for the best, mija.”
“I’ll uh, I’ll go check on her then make sure the room’s all set for her.”
“Okay. No funny business in the bathroom.”
“Dad!” She seethed, “Of course not.”
Jos knocked on the bathroom door, you could barely hear it over the sound of the water. “Yes?”
“It’s me.” Jos spoke louder, “You doing okay?”
“Yeah. Why?”
The door opened and she peeked into the room, “I got the room all nice and dark for you once you get outta here.”
“Thanks. Don’t even think about joining me in here.”
“I’ve been warned, so no. Don’t worry.” She bit back a laugh.
“I’ll be waiting in my room. Take your time, yeah?”
You walked into Jos’ bedroom a good thirty minutes later, dressed in her sweatpants and baggy t-shirt. She opened up her arms and you just straddled her and sat in her lap, inhaling the comforting scent of her favourite vanilla and rose lotion. “Hey.” She whispered, pressing a kiss to your cheek while rubbing your back, “You wanna lay down?”
You shook your head.
“That’s alright.” The soothing motions of her palm continued.
After a bit, you broke away from the embrace. “Maybe…I want some funny business.”
“What?” She chuckled, “Ohh. Alright.” Jos had her hand going up your cheek, cupping it before she tucked some hair behind your ear. She looked at you in a silent ask. You nodded, she crashed her lips onto your own. “I didn’t lock the door.” You murmured.
“I got it.” Jos sighed, “One sec.” You climbed off of her, spotted the tumbler on her nightstand and took a gulp. It was coffee. Ice cold coffee. Once she’d locked her door she rushed back to you, eager to kiss you again. “Let me see your hand.” She requested when you climbed back onto her lap, with your knees on either side of her thighs.
“Jos, I’m fine, It didn’t even leave a mark.”
“I know.” She hummed, her fingertips tracing your palm with no particular pattern. “I just feel bad, you were looking out for me and you got zapped.”
“I get it, but don’t feel bad. I’m perfectly fine, and it was an accident.” You assured.
She chuckled lowly, gently holding your cheek once again, “Let me make up for that and help you with your migraine. He did say to make sure you try other things. Besides…he only said no funny business in the bathroom. This isn’t the bathroom.”
You grinned, “Be my guest. I’m all yours, Jos.”
