earlier this month it was 120 degrees in Australia , but yeah lets continue to mock those trying to save us in the 12 years we have left to slow climate changeâs effects.Â
What is the worst thing that could happen if we listen to scientists and change our ways, and then it turns out they were lying?Â
Slowly dying in a mad max hell world to own the libs I guess.Â
this is literally why scientists stopped calling it âglobal warmingâ and started calling it âclimate changeâ
because these dense motherfuckers couldnât get it through their heads that an increase in the average global temperature is, has, and will lead to an increase in extreme weather events including goddamn polar vortexes.
âFner ner ner, look at all the snow outside, what of your global warming now?? CHECK AND MATE SCIENTISTS so much for your fancy degrees and decades of researchâ of fucking course youâre still gonna get a winter you goddamn dingdongs! The Earth still has a fucking axial tilt â there is always going to be a portion of the year that is colder because thatâs when youâre further away from the sun!Â
(unless you live between the tropic of cancer and the tropic of capricorn, in which case youâre at more or less the same distance from the sun all year, but presumably then you arenât pointing to snowfall as proof positive that scientists are spearheading a conspiracy toâŠi donât even fucking know. reduce emissions? meanspiritedly destroy the fossil fuel industry, which is gentle and blameless and certainly has never been linked to enormous environmental disasters or long-term health concerns orâŠ?)
Conservatives will be the fucking death of us
Also the reason for these extremely cold temperatures happening and doing so more often is directly a result of literal global warming. Due to rising temperatures (thanks to climate change caused by humans which is real and happening right now and fuck anyone who says otherwise), the Arctic sea ice has been melting more and more without replenishing itself during winter. To make matters worse, the more ice that melts, the more ocean is exposed, which absorbs (rather that reflecting like ice does) the sunâs energy, further heating up.Â
This rise in polar temperatures is the reason the polar vortex is currently above the US and making Day After Tomorrow a reality
For those who donât know, a polar vortex is an area of low pressure that likes to chill around the poles (both north and south but the north is more relevant here). These areas of cold, dense air are usually kept in check by jet streams: long, narrow, fast flowing air currents caused by two masses of air that are different in density/pressure/temperature etc. meeting.Â
The polar jet streams in particular are caused by the meeting of cold, dense low pressure polar air and warm high pressure air from the tropics. Itâs usually pretty strong, especially during winter, as the temperature gradient between the poles and the tropics is rather large. The bigger the difference, the stronger the wind, and the less likely that polar air escapes southwards.
However, due to the warming around the north pole thanks to the melting sea ice and warming oceans, this gradient is decreasing.
This results in a weaker polar jet stream, which allows the vortex to meander all over the place, such as down south into the US, bringing the cold dense air with it.
Please go forth and use this information to make sure the idiots using this cold snap as piss poor evidence that climate change isnât real know that theyâre wrong and they should feel bad. Also maybe tie them down and make them watch this video (which is where I got these gifs from) which is a good (but terrifying) explanation of how extreme weather events are becoming and will become more common as a result of anthropogenic climate change.
And yet somehow these idiots donât think parts of the USA literally being colder than the uninhabitable Antarctic is a crisis.Â
the signs grouped
taurus, cancer, libra, saggitarius: mom friend of each element, equally craves balance and excitement, can have lots of emotions but donât always express them in the best way, always unsure of where to focus their energy, indulgent in expensive or nice things
capricorn, scorpio, gemini, aries: the self-proclaimed badasses of each element, intense energy, work hard, can be hard to read emotionally, typically full of interesting things to say and blunt playful/witty banter
virgo, pisces, aquarius, leo: the independent signs of each element, introspective, tends to live in their own world, a lot of energy focused on the self, usually does things a bit differently, wants to stand out

My entire account, all I have ever written, is to convey this.
All I want is for someone to look at my words and say-
âI get you. I understand you. It feels that way to me too. Youâre not alone.â
In case anyone else is wondering, this is a passage from Kazuo Ishiguroâs Nobel Lecture.

Basically my life right now.
When body becomes liquid
âImagine having a child that refuses to hug you or even look you in the eyesâ
Imagine being shamed, as a child, for not showing affection in a way that is unnatural or even painful for you. Imagine being forced, as a child, to show affection in a way that is unnatural or even painful for you. Imagine being told, as a child, that your ways of expressing affection werenât good enough. Imagine being taught, as a child, to associate physical affection with pain and coercion.
As a preschool special ed para, this is very important to me. All my kids have their own ways of showing affection that are just as meaningful to them as a hug or eye contact is to you or me.Â
One gently squeezes my hand between both of his palms as he says âsquish.â I reciprocate. When he looks like heâs feeling sad or lost, I ask if I can squish him, and he will show me where I can squish him. Sometimes itâs almost like a hug, but most of the time, itâs just a hand or an arm I press between my palms. Then he squishes my hand in return, says âsquish,â and moves on. He will come ask for squishes now, when he recognizes that he needs them.
Another boy smiles and sticks his chin out at me, and if heâs really excited, heâll lean his whole body toward me. The first time he finally won a game at circle time, he got so excited he even ran over and bumped chins with me. He now does it when he sees me outside of school too. I stick out my chin to acknowledge him, and he grins and runs over and I lean down for a chin bump.
Yet another child swings my hand really fast. At a time when another child would be seeking a hug, she stands beside me and holds my hand, and swings it back and forth, with a smile if Iâm lucky. The look on her face when I initiate the hand swinging is priceless.
Another one bumps his hip against mine when he walks by in the hallway or on the playground, or when he gets up after Iâm done working with him. No eye contact, no words, but he goes out of his way to âcrashâ into me, and I tell him that itâs good to see him. He now loves to crash into me when Iâm least expecting it. He doesnât want anything, really. Just a bump to say âHi, I appreciate youâre here.â And when heâs upset and we have to take a break, Iâll bump him, ask if he needs to take a walk, and we just go wander for a bit and discuss whateverâs wrong, and heâs practically glued to my side. Then one more bump before we go back into the room to face the problem.
Moral of the story is, alternative affection is just as valid and vitally important as traditional affection. Reciprocating alternative affection is just as valid and vitally important as returning a hug. That is how you build connections with these children.Â
This is so goddamn important.
I verbally express affection. A LOT.
My husband⊠doesnât. I donât know why. For the longest time part of me wondered if it meant he loved me less.
At some point I told him about a thing I had done as a kid. Holding hands, three squeezes means âI Love Youâ.
Suddenly heâs telling me I Love You all the time.
Holding my hand, obviously, but also randomly.
taptaptap
on my hand, my shoulder, my butt, my knee, whatever body part is closest to him, with whatever part of him is closest to me
All the time.
More often than I ever verbally said it.
Itâs an ingrained signal now, I can tap three times on whatever part of him, and get three taps back in his sleep. Apparently I do the same.
Itâs made a huge difference for us.
People say things differently.

When I explain cultural misappropriation to children, I use the example of The Nightmare Before Christmas. Â
Itâs effective because especially for children, who donât have enough historical context to understand much of the concept, you can still fully grasp the idea. Â
There was nothing wrong with Jack seeing the beauty and differences in Christmas town, itâs when he tried to take what is unique about Christmas town away from those it originally belonged to without understanding the full context of Christmas things is when everything went wrong.
When Jack tries to get the folk of Halloween town to make Christmas gifts for children, etc., children understand that the Halloween town folk do not have the full context for the objects they are making, and they are able to see that the direct repercussions and consequences are very harmful.
what i like about this is the implication that if jack had taken the time to understand christmas town, bringing christmas to halloween town would not have been harmful. thatâs how it works, folks. cultural sharing is GOOD, itâs only misappropriation when itâs done in ignorance and disrespect.
Thereâs an interesting level here in that Jack tried to understand Christmas town. He could see the magic while he was there, and he did try to explain it that way to citizens of Halloween town.  But they werenât interested in the kind of life he was describing, so he started ârebrandingâ Christmas so that it was not like Christmas but was like Halloween. The people of Halloween town, never having actually encountered Christmas, have no way of knowing that what theyâre being told about Christmas and âSandy Clawsâ is inaccurate. Jack also tried to study Christmas and its culture, though he couldnât quite get it; eventually, he literally decides to take it for himself, even as he knows itâs not really for him.  He started out feeling sad the others in Halloween town didnât âget it,â but he then decided itâs not important to fully âget itâ but instead to have it.
So itâs not just accidentally removing things form their context; he has intentionally disregard the meaning of the rituals he purports to be recreating, making them more fun for the recreaters but not like what the rituals are supposed to be and without the related significance.
This is the best way to conceptualize the wrong way to share culture I have ever seen and I think I finally get where people are coming from when they talk about âcultural appropriation.â
