the thing that drives me up the wall about “anti/proship” discourse is that it frames grooming as like, primarily an ideological practice in which the threat is that kids will “think adult/minor relationships are morally ok”. which sure maybe that happens idfk but the thing is that grooming is in practical almost entirely divorced from ideology and is so much more about individual exceptionalism… which I think is especially true for fandom-aged demographics! these aren’t kids who are just freshly learning the basics of right and wrong, most of them probably already generally know what pedophilia is and think it’s bad, it’s just that they’re also particularly susceptible to individualized attention that makes them feel uniquely special and mature.

like. I don’t know. it’s just incredibly frustrating to see people continually talking about CSA like it only happens because the perpetrators and victims believe pedophilia is morally permissible rather than because they think that their own personal circumstances exonerate them and make it uniquely acceptable and not harmful.

it is overwhelmingly my experience that kids and teens who met and then “dated” adult partners struggle to think of themselves as victims of CSA because for whatever reason it just didn’t count—not when it was them. they were too precocious, they had too much agency, their abuser didn’t mean any harm, and what would have been a terrible criminal travesty if it had happened to anyone else was just a weird but understandable fluke situation that they brought upon themselves.

I've said it before and I will keep saying it until the gods themselves strike me down together, but dehumanizing groups of people you find unpleasant or reprehensible will neve be a progressive tool, ever. You need to understand that by using a tool, you are validating its use by saying "You can do this, if you justify it hard enough." You put it on the table, for anyone at your table to use.

No matter what groups you name or how you define them, that definition can and will be expanded to allow others with their own agendas to justify using that tool on others. And just to make sure y'all fucking get me, I'm gonna say it straight.

Get the fuck over the pedophile scare. Get over it. It's a conservative rhetorical tool designed to shut off critical thinking by weaponizing your disgust, outrage, protective instincts, and righteous anger against you. It doesn't matter what you mean when you say "pedophile" or anything else that means the same thing, those with political power are classifying inconvenient minorities, primarily queer people, primarily trans women, primarily people of color, as pedophiles.

You need to put down your bloodlust and you need to love victims more than you hate abusers. You need to set your disgust aside and figure out how to let even the worst of us be human beings, too. You need to stop letting "think of the children" whip you up into a righteous frenzy, and you need to recognize that authoritarian methods are bad because they infringe on human freedoms, not because the wrong people are trying to use them, not because they're being used for the wrong ends.

There's no "right" way to use authoritarian methods. By using them, you legitimize their use to meet any ends one deems "worth it," and you need to recognize that not everyone thinks like you and shares your feelings, even on stuff that feels so obvious as to not even warrant consideration to you. So other people will find other things "worth" being authoritarian over, and by making space to employ authoritarian tactics like censorship and policing, you are making space for those tactics to be used at all, and that will be abused.

The world is scary and on fire and full of apocalyptic injustices left and right, I know. I'm angry too, angrier than I can put to words. But there are better ways to address that outrage, healthier outlets, safer, more constructive tools. We can't fix things by using the same methods that got us into this mess. We need to make something better, by trying something better. Otherwise all we accomplish is creating the same world that ruined us with a fresh coat of paint and a sparkly new name.

If you spend all your energy hunting pedophiles to punish them endlessly, you abandon victims and give them nothing. Many if not most victims would happily let their abusers go unpunished if it meant they were given access to resources to recover and stay away from them. Many if not most victims would rather their abusers be given help, so that they learn to address whatever the fuck made them do that in a way that ensures they never will again.

Punishment doesn't fix things, it doesn't mend anything. It won't save us, and even if we could hunt and kill every pedophile on earth with complete accuracy, more would still appear, because it's not a fucking contamination that spreads, it's a form of abuse that arises and is allowed to persist due to environmental factors, social structures, and human psychology.

If you really care about "fighting pedophilia," you should focus your efforts on advocating for childhood sexual education, and deconstructing the fascist ideal of the nuclear family. The former is proven to have a notable impact on reducing CSA, and the latter seeks to dimantle something that is proven to create the precise kinds of power imbalances that enable and cover for abusers to abuse.

Your feelings of disgust are not a moral guideline, they are not a political compass. They are feelings, and they're just as likely to say more about you as they are to say something about what you're reacting to. Stop thinking with your knee-jerk feelings and start thinking with your fucking head.

Like, this also ties in to people's lack of understanding of nuance too. Is the big bad of SU comparable, if not worse, than many real-life dictators? Yes. Are the showrunners trying to impart the moral that being kind to genociders can and will make them stop genociding? Absolutely fucking not. You need to understand that this is a show for CHILDREN. Children encounter lots of people on a daily basis, especially other children, who they earnestly believe to be completely irredeemable and evil for extremely benign reasons. Children are not fully developed emotionally, and this is meant to prime them to try and handle these situations that they PERSONALLY encounter with some level of empathy and understanding. Steven universe is not making a statement to the president of the United States that they think evil dictators just need a hug. People need to understand the intended context of who the show will be watched by, where, and when. A show for adults like Bojack Horseman MIGHT be trying to make a statement about society at large, and geopolitics, and things that concern adults. But shows for children are not. Steven Universe contains some pretty heavy shit for a kids show, but again, these are typically in relation to a given persons personal relationships, and not politics. For example, Steven Universe tackles lots of different kinds of abuse. This is useful for children and adults alike, twice as much for children who will grow into adults. I think part of the problem is that people were primed by the discussions of serious themes like this into expecting more "realistic" handlings of other things. Like space dictators.

Like, the sentiment of "I am angry that [children's show] was written with children in mind in terms of both theme and execution" will never cease to baffle me, in regards to any show. Some of my favorite shows are made for children. There's no shame in enjoying media for children, but expecting it to cater to adults merely because adults enjoy it is just unrealistic. Teaching children that some people just have to be killed and can't be redeemed just isn't a good idea. Most children, even once fully grown into adults, won't be dealing with Hitlers on a daily basis.

So anyway, yeah, I thought Steven Universes ending was fine.

Honestly it's crazy how being an anti slowed my recovery from my abuse because my brain deciding to develop fetishes based on what happened to me, according to everyone around me, clearly meant that I put myself in that situation on purpose and that I was at fault and actually enjoyed it 😬🙄😒 No one hates victims more than antis. Speaking as a former one seeing how I acted towards other victims because I was impressionable and "trying to be right" still makes me ill. I hope anyone who has been harassed by antis and told they deserved what they got finds peace. And anyone who is an anti and feels disgusted at themselves for experiencing trauma "the wrong way" finds not just peace but better friends too 😕

from what i’ve seen, antis do all of this in the name of “saving the kids” or “preventing abuse” and they either don’t realize they’re perpetuating abuse directly or they do realize it, and they’ve just convinced themselves that because of their target, it’s okay (which is abuser 101 but they seem to ignore that). and since they can’t actually do anything that matters (like supporting and listening to victims, donating to organizations that help victims) since it doesn’t give them any direct satisfaction, they take it out on random people for shipping, idk, bart simpson with marge or some shit. they don’t even care that reading/drawing/consuming random ship content is too broad a category to consistently catch actual criminals. at the base of it, they don’t give a shit about real victims. they just want a vague enough entity to “protect” so that they have an excuse to seek out things that they don’t want to see and act like assholes

being an anti and a writer interested in creating dark fiction was really fucked up. my antagonists were shallow and when i tried to write central conflicts (like dealing with the repercussions of CSA, emotional incest, etc) i danced around it because i was afraid that people would think i was a nasty proshipper who was glorifying bad things, that i deserved what happened to me, et cetera. looking back, im so glad i got out of there, because if i didn’t everything i write would be so shitty and emotionless because of that same fear. i’m proud of you for getting out of there too, anon. it takes a lot of courage and maturity to admit you were wrong especially after you were trying so hard to be right
