âQ: Can creative acts be rebellious when rebellion has become canonised in art, design and media histories? What would a contemporary creative rebellion look like?â
The final project assembles all the concepts that I would like to cover in terms of creative rebellious acts, it has been through a dramatic evolution stemming from an unpopular controversial social concern, to the depressing reality of the current deep web dilemma and finally arrived at a summary of our on-going suffering journey as being a human and the idealised world that portrayed by our imagination.
What Philip Budkin has started â the blue whale movement, as well as similar series of Momo challenge, and establishing a most terrifying character based on a murder story, is one way of contemporary creative rebellion, projecting anger into the society by punishing innocent people or influencing them into a negative light, which most of the horror movies are based on peopleâs fear and weakness. However this type of rebellion is endangering the society, targeting the vulnerable and easily persuaded young generations so that their lack of critical minds will fail them and therefore let them be misled into believing in the darkness. The minority group are unrecognised and quiet that is usually neglected in the real world, and that opens up opportunities to the predators to invade into their minds, slowly and slowly corroded. Internet is such a broad but also private platform for the kids to seek for escape and reveal their softness, and because it is unlikely to be detected through online chats, it can hardly be intervened or monitored by the public.
The red whale is a good icon and a guidance that can empower young people, strengthen their mentality through self-helping practices, and a counter-rebellion for the unhealthy influence in the society. It therefore pinpointed the main theme for this assessment, and could also be known as âThe Defence Against the Dark Artsâ.
The colour red itself has the notion of love, energy, desire and power, it encompasses both the positive and negative experience that we have throughout our life, yet here the main focus is empowerment and resilience that pushes us to overcome or fuels us with energy to fight against human flaws. The white colour left in the rest of the poster signifies purification, as referenced from the White Temple, suggests the hope for us to overcome the human nature and pursue a better state of ourselves rather than being hopeless and dwell in our desires. It borrows the ideology from Buddhism that we are in a living hell to suffer through all the difficulties as well as Danteâs inferno illustrating our journey through the seven sins â pride, envy, sloth, anger, greed, hunger and lust.
Even though we are in a modern world, facing different problems such as cyberbullies, pressures coming from the virtual world as well as the real world, we still share the same problems as people in ancient times, and therefore it is important for us to learn these about ourselves and be sceptical to the temptations and the vast amount of information surrounding us from an early age. It saddens me to see kids die from such a young age and the number is still increasing due to the big web that we all fall into nowadays. Everyone has access to internet, kids advance into the adult world a lot earlier than before, they are not prepared to receive criticism and process dangerous information properly, therefore there should be more care and activist on the internet to discover those vulnerable kids and intervene with potential risky thoughts that they have. Other online users should also be aware of their language and actions, not to cause social panic to the online community, and hence this poster is also morality reminders of them to be able to monitor their own actions and being alert with their morality. It is extremely important nowadays that we keep clean of this virtual reality in various creative ways with our enhanced intelligence and ethical standards.
Contemporary rebellious acts are creative in the way that we are able to utilise different presentations of ourselves through internet, the community is broadened and more freedom and methods are given to people to express themselves, therefore we are expected to be better at critically identify the good and the bad so as to keep us safe while enjoying the virtual world.
