The power of Who
Today, I was one of the adult chaperones on a field trip to go see the LA Opera with the kids that I volunteer with. On the way there, I sat next to a kid who is now in third grade. But he was in the first grade class I volunteered with and then the second grade class. He asked me if I knew what opera we were seeing and at first I thought it was Puccini, but I was wrong. It was Figaro by Rossini. But for some reason I mentioned the Magic Flute and then I said “fight between good and evil.”
He said, “Oh, that sounds like Once Upon a Time, my sister watches that.”
I said, “What do you watch?”
He said, “Doctor Who.”
I said, “Which one is your favorite Doctor and companion?”
He said, “Tenth and Rose.”
Then we talked about it all the way to the opera and all the way back to school. Before we got off the bus, he said.
"Miss Cecil, I’ve been waiting so long to meet someone who also liked Doctor Who. No one else I know watches it. I was so surprised when you said you did. I thought it would never happen."
And it got me thinking about those great moments when you meet the people who like the same things that you do. And they get what is cool about it. That is what I love about being a nerd. And sitting with this little nerd, my heart just grew about twelve times. Because he really loved the show and knew so much about it. And because I felt like I had reassured him somehow that liking what you like is ok even if you think you are the only one who sees something special about it. And even if you feel alone, eventually you will find other people who feel the same way about that thing you adore.
To see his face light up and his relief at the realization that someone understood why Doctor Who was cool? Well, it felt like a win for glorious nerds everywhere.
