SHADOW AND BONE — 2x05: Despise Your Heart (2023)

i liked the idea of tradition by the way of ‘in the tradition of a specific artist’ and landed on magritte. the most direct inspirations were two of his paintings, 16th September and the Banquet (non animated version will be up later!)

“Ember Island Players”, but the version where the show decided it was actually important to address that kissing people without consent is not okay, even if you think that person is your “forever girl”. Especially if you think that person is your “forever girl” but she kind of just rejected you. Remember kids, unless you get an enthusiastic yes in consent, then the answer is no.

Aka in this house we stan Katara, and are still upset 12 years later about how the forced kiss was never mentioned again when homegirl is a major character and was clearly very upset by it.

Also, if you think it would be fun to learn how to create gif manipulations and decide to teach yourself…. choose a less ambitious first project than creating an entire “missing” scene from a cartoon. I am very tired.

EDIT: I had someone ask why Aang kissing Katara in this scene was a bad thing if they end up together, you can read my explanation here.

this is actually….something i didn’t know i needed. wow.

i love bby boy aang, but in this moment (in the whole ep, really) aang was pretty uncool. and truly, i think it was a wonderful side of aang to add, bc it showed his flaws and his insecurities and fleshed him out deeper than he had been before, BUT—as it is a kids show that has always prioritized showing the gray area of a character going hand-in-hand with a hopeful/healthy message addressing that gray area—the insecurity aang showed here that led to him violating katara’s boundaries lost impact and meaning because the writers never followed up with a scene that addressed why it was a violation in the first place, or even, how he should approach his feelings and those situations correctly in the future.

anyways, this is a really cool fan-addition to the episode, and i think it would have been a really wholesome and time-worthy scene to animate, even if the comfort and wisdom had come from any members of the gaang (like damn, they could have even thrown in some suki/katara sister like bonding here, but instead, they acted like the two hardly even noticed each other in the whole series lmao).
