How is your day so far?

This is a really odd ask to get within 10 minutes of being back on this blog after a really, really long absence.

It’s good though, fam. Read some good fic. Dipping my toes  back in Naruto things again. Positive feelings all around.

They're in something of an odd place, he and her. Well, he is at least. Karin doesn't seem to have changed in the slightest since she saw him beat a man half-dead into the ground save for a few odd glances his way, a bit of conversation every so often. Plenty enough for her to decide on something one way or the other maybe, but him? Not so much. He brushes her shoulder on the way out of class, gets her attention. "Got a second? Wanted to ask you something."

He’s right -- she hasn’t changed one bit. The violence did nothing for her. On the scale of dark secrets, his probably rates about a 6, but to someone like her anything less than a 7 isn’t worth batting an eye over. 

She only notices he’s being weird about it when he starts to be really weird about it. Hovering, making small talk he didn’t use to make, trying to find ways to be around her when previously neither cared the other existed. Karin figures he’s trying to figure something out for himself, so she’s not at all surprised when he reaches out.

“Don’t touch me,” she says, immediately batting his hand away, but not making any more of a scene than that. She’ll only tell him once. “Ever. I don’t like it when people touch me.”

She gives him that second he asks. Nothing. Is he deliberately trying to waste her time?

“Well? Did you have something to say or what?”

He’s forgotten the number of attempts they’ve tried to ‘get along’. Bond really, because by twist of fate they’re related. Cousins maybe? Something like that. Or that’s what he believes....okay not really. He’s not sure what he thinks on this. Though he stills feels some sort of expectation to do something. “Wanna grab a bite to eat? Doesn’t have to be ramen!” He tried that avenue already.

It’s lonely in Konohagakure. It’s lonely everywhere, and no matter how many times Karin tries to tell herself she doesn’t need anyone, at the end of the day she always comes face to face with the fact that she’s telling a lie. She’s tired of being alone. 

It’s a humiliating thing to admit. Konoha almost feels like home did, back when she had one. And it feels so much like Kusa, too, that when she closes her eyes and tries to hell herself to relax, she always opens them with the hope she’ll see a few familiar faces. 

She never does. There’s never anyone she misses waiting for her. 

It’s really just her, stuck here, earning some sort of amnesty she’s not sure she even cares about. Surrounded by people who she knows don’t care for her. Just surrounded.

Naruto has the kind of wonderful, terrible timing that means he always shows up when she wants to see him least, but needs to see him most. Even if he’s unsure about his invitation -- his chakra radiates a sense of unease so strong she can almost taste it -- she’s going to be selfish and take it.

“I am really worn out on ramen,” she admits. There’s a thank you hidden in there somewhere for offering to take her somewhere else. And she’s trying to be nice -- really, honestly trying, for once too worn down by the silence around her to find something about him to pick at. 

“Does Konoha have any sea food? We could get fried squid?”

drew ma fav uzumakis during lessons and had a fun time with kushina’s hair! not as much fun with the chains tho, which I will forever curse my classmate for pointing out, as it’s part of kushina’s arsenal.

She has overstayed her welcome. He wants her out. She needs to go back to her mama, to her place, and come back maybe never? Fine, later. His mama wouldn’t be happy if he said that aloud. Hmph. 

Peeking into the living room, he clutches his stuffed fox as he watches as his mama let her sit on her lap. She’s looking over some hairpins, meanwhile is ma is brushing out her short hair. His ma let’s out a deep laugh and Naruto takes a few steps closer. Now he’s watching over the armrest of the couch. 

Why is she gettin’ so much attention from his parents? He doesn’t want to share them any longer! That’s why yesterday…he pushed her out of the way when he saw his mother bending down to give her a kiss. Well it looked that way!

He drifts back from his thoughts and realizes two pair of eyes are watching him. He ducks behind the couch and holds his fox closer and he pouts to himself. 

“Ready to say sorry to Karin, love?” He hears his mom ask. Naruto shakes his head. No he really isn’t, so he stays quiet and keeps huffing. Kushina looks at Karin and shakes her head. 

“Guess it’s just Karin, dad, and me goin’ out for ramen. The brat wants to stay home.” She shrugs while setting the brush aside. She takes the hair clip Karin selected and smiles at her. Naruto decides to stomp out from the couch at the moment, face scrunched into a scowl. More like pout, his cheeks erase anything menacing about his expression. 

“I want ramen!” He shouts, stomping his foot. He climbs onto the sofa and looks at Karin, who he catches is staring back. Maybe glarin’ at him. 

“Sorry,” he says looking off to the side, but his mother’s shakes her head clicking her tongue. 

“Do it right brat,” she says pinching his little nose. Then she gestures for him to give it a second chance. Naruto wiggles out his nose before he crawls over to the side Karin is seated on. He looks at her with a frown, still not entirely into this. When she matches his scowl, he blinks. 

“Do I gotta give her a kiss, like I do to you and pa,” he asks looking at his mother. He really doesn’t want to…but his mother shrugs and doesn’t help. Grrr. 

“You decide.” Naruto cheeks puff out again and he gets closer as he’s leaning forward to plant one, he’s suddenly thrown off balance by a harsh shove and a loud ‘no!’ When he regains his bearings, he sees Karin is looking at him with her own scowl. 

Naruto lower lip trembles. 

Kushina closes her eyes and sighs.
