I'm genuinely curious, why the hate for the Bobby Flay? I've seen that sentiment shared in the fandom and I'm a newcomer and from what I've seen on TV, he seems talented but also respectful of other chefs and a good sport. I figured that someone who seems so talented must have some dirt but I don't know what it is pls help
I’ve definitely given a serious answer before but you really gotta scroll to look for it so I’ll bite and give you my two cents.
I think a lot of the problem with bobby flay is the unfairness of his shows and the fact that he represents white mediocrity. Time and time again he’s disrespected food culture and family recipes.
personally it’s really annoying to watch a person of color to come on beat bobby flay with a dish that represents their whole cultural identity and bobby says, “I haven’t ever heard of that” completely americanizes all of the flavors by utilizing this weird set of south western flavors that he *always* uses and then wins anyway with a dish that barely even passes as a representation of the original.
I think that while I owe him for making it easier for a LOT of people to make easy, good tasting recipes, after growing up on food network I’ve noticed that his flavor profile is really same-ish. And it kind of perpetuates this whole weird attitude towards food thats against playing around and testing how different flavors interact with each other. I mean, honestly, why would you play around when you could always fall back on pablano peppers just like bobby?
anyways tl;dr curse this wretched midwesterner and his pepper recipes
Also don’t forget that time in Iron Chef against Morimoto where Bobby considered himself the winner and stood on the cutting board! And then ended up losing to Morimoto.
Bobby is just super disrespectful. Also he’s really ugly.
that episode planted the seeds of me disliking bobby as a child.
And while I admit that was years ago and he could have changed, he really seems to have not improved. His arrogance is still just as high, if not heightened by his show, and he still doesn’t seem to grasp how cuisine is really culturally important.
My dad tended bar for a decade at a restaurant here in Vegas called the Palm, inside of Caesar’s Palace. Bobby Flay opened up his restaurant Mesa Grill in Caesar’s, some hundred yards away from the Palm. To provide some background, the Palm is a pretty famous, popular, high-end chain of restaurants dating back to the 20’s, a series of fancy steakhouses that would NEVER go out of business, they’re classic, they’re timeless.
Now, Bobby Flay is in his newly opened restaurant, as it’s his first and only restaurant in Las Vegas, a pretty big deal. It’s not quite 5 pm yet, so both restaurants are mostly empty. Bobby Flay crosses the casino, walks into the Palm and requests a to-go order. This is fine, it’s Las Vegas, the staff see celebrities in the restaurant and casino all the time. What’s weird is that he doesn’t sit at the bar or in the restaurant, doesn’t say please or accept any offers of beverages, he just STANDS. He stand with his arms crossed, bouncing on his feet, just looking around at the interior of the Palm, giving off a hostile vibe according to my dadm Bobby Flay receives his chicken parmigiana, with a side salad and bread, all to-go. He receives it, pays without saying thank you, and walks out of the restaurant. About halfway back to Mesa Grill, Bobby Flay stops, takes a quick glance into his $45 dollar chicken parmigiana meal, then dumps the entire thing into the garbage before continuing on his way.
My dad never liked Bobby Flay after that. OP’s reasons and this story make me dislike him, too.
Tl;dr: Bobby Flay’s petty ass scoped out the restaurant where my dad worked under the guise of rudely ordering food to-go, then dumped his expensive ass meal without even opening the containers.
Also, two of his big shows are all about someone who makes something really well and having Bobby Flay try to show them up. It especially seemed crappy in Throwdown With Bobby Flay where people would think it was a different sow and he’d basically ambush them. And he’d always sort of wave off their version, saying “I’m going to put my own spin on it,” which, shock of shocks, was almost always putting peppers in it. Plus he acts like he’s some master of southwestern cuisine when he’s from fucking Manhattan. Don’t you try and tell me about southwestern flavor profiles, ya fucking New Yorker.
Bobby Flay, the master of knocking off other people’s cuisines, and “elevating” them with sauces in squeeze bottles.
I think “White mediocrity” sums it up pretty well… If it’s any consolation, he’s (generally) not thought of well in professional circles.
Understand that there is a huge difference between someone finding you physically attractive and someone who actually respects and values you as a whole person and sees you in their future
“Would you ever hurt me sober?”
“Of course not.”
- he says sober
