Presentation Reflection

All the presentations have been so fantastic! It’s been so great to see everyone’s individuality and unique interests displayed in their research choices and presentation. It’s really hard to pick a favorite, but I will mention a few that I really liked. 

I really like Zoe’s topic because, as a member of the Doctor Who fandom, I thought her research and remediations and genuine interest in the community is awesome. Zoe, I really hope that you start watching Doctor Who. It’s so great and one thing you probably learned about the community is that we LOVE to see it grow. 

I also really liked Kyle’s presentation because I think he really made his Project 2 into an easily digestible form for broader audiences. His buzzfeed article was hilarious and I already shared it on my facebook. 

I think Molly did a good job on being effective and innovative with her genres. Let’s be honest, we all didn’t think that Project 3 was doable until we saw how Molly did her Project 3.

I’ve never watched Doctor Who because I have never really heard much about it. However, Zoe’s project interested me and makes me think I might start watching this too. You can tell Zoe put a lot of effort into this project and she did a great job presenting. The timeline was a great idea and I’m glad she stuck with the idea even though she came across obstacles (having to use multiple programs). I probably would have given up on the idea whenever it started to cost too much time and aggravation. Good job Zoe!

Most Effective Presentation- Final Reflection

The most effective presentation of the class was not necessarily the project that received the most likes, views or shares; it was not the project with the most riveting topic, most original goal, nor the craziest presentation topic. I thought it was the presentation that was completed with the most passion and effort, which in my opinion, was Allison’s. Her Facebook posts were mainstream, but the effort that obviously went into creating the YouTube video and interactive online book was more impressive than many of the other projects. Time is an often overlooked resource and in terms of college students, it is the most invaluable; so to see a project that was completed because of a genuine concern for the topic instead of a genuine desire to merely complete the project was refreshing. Not to say that other projects did not reflect a large amount of effort and time and sleepless nights, by no means, but only to highlight the creativity and effort that was used in Allison’s project. Even though there are many other sites and campaigns that promote the same issue, the fact that Allison is only in college and still created propaganda of the same caliber of these other professionals is in itself impressive. I hope that her book sees much success as time goes on and that her idea continues to grow and prosper.

I thought Allison’s children’s book was such a neat idea too. I’m sure it took a lot of time and effort to come up with the story and of all of the images and details. You definitely have to respect her for committing to this project! I am going to look for her YouTube video now!

Presentation Reflection

I think all of the presentations were great and all of the topics were fairly interesting, whether the composer thought other people were interested or not. I think the best presentations, however, were the projects that included unique genres, so I will mention 2 projects here instead of one. Allison’s presentation was very interesting. Not only did she upload a video, but she also created a children’s book which is really impressive. I didn’t even consider this as an option so I consider it very creative and I’m sure she put in a lot of time into it. Kyle’s presentation was also one of my favorite presentations because his topic is interesting, he used a buzzfeed article, a podcast, and a photo essay. His buzzfeed article got an impressive response (although mine got 110 views hehe). I automatically respect anyone who does a podcast because I can’t even stand to listen to my voice on a short video. Also, he shared his photo essay with actual people face-to-face on campus and got them to respond to a few questions. I would have never voluntarily present my project face-to-face, so respect. I didn’t even like promoting my genres on my personal social media accounts.

BBG Chapter 10

Ah yes, another reading in the dreaded Bedford Book of Genres.  It seems like is has been so long since we’ve had a reading in that I wasn’t ready for the accustomed long and drawn out chapters.  However, this chapter surprised m, not only in its length but also in it actually being a good read.

I think that the list of genres and how the y can be utilized is one of the most important things I’ve read from the BBG and I will gladly use the information presented for Project 3.  I hadn’t really thought that certain genres have an innate purpose for the audience, but with this in mind changing my audience and purpose for my genres will definitely strengthen their arguments.  

On top of this, the examples were very interesting to read about.  Being an outdoorsy person, nature deficit disorder is something I’ve researched and discussed to people so this caught my eye.  This was a good example for me to understand how the remediation of genres can be effective in order to accomplish different goals that are set forth by the genre.

After reading this, although I will still probably freak out about Project 3 being due soon, I feel a little bit better about getting it done.

It is neat that you were able to find something you could relate to in this chapter (the example with Nature Deficit Disorder) and learn from it. I thought that his project was really interesting, especially the presentation of his poster! So thoughtful...

BBG Chapter 10 11.18.15

The time has finally come. The last required reading in the infamous Bedford Book of Genres. I have to say I’m not even mad about it. When it comes to creating a Mulitgenre project, there are so many options when it comes to the execution and I think that is what excites me. Knowing that all of us are creating something unique will make the presentations interesting. While reading through Chapter 10, one thing that I found interesting was the idea of creating an author’s or artist’s statement. An introduction to our work is important considering that we want to provide clarity through our presentations, but I never really thought about calling it a ‘statement.’ But truth be told whatever we are presenting we want to make a statement with, or at least we are hoping to make a statement. In the end, the goal for all of us is to reach our target audience. In every step of creating our Mulitgenre project it has been important to keep our target audience in mind. The chapter as a whole just really wrapped up project 3 in a clear manner. Simply put in my own words: Create something interesting, stick to your plan, appeal to your audience, and execute your campaign on the right platform. We are coming down to the wire but success can be achieved!

Thank you for letting me know this is the last reflection from the BBG. That is honestly the best news I have gotten today. Granted, I haven’t gotten that much great news... Still. However, that does mean class is nearing the end and deadlines are also creeping up. Also, good realization. We are all trying to make a statement with our genres. Good luck with project 3!

Chapter 10 BBG

Reading just the name of this chapter made me cringe. My reactions only got worse as I continued to read. This chapter made me think about the final part of the project, where we write about our genres and reflect on them. However, one thing that I found interesting is that the books states you can choose different perspectives on an argument throughout your different genres. I had not considered this. I wouldn’t do this with my topic, but it is still an interesting concept.

I am using Instagram as one of my genres. I have already done an introduction to let my followers know that I will be bombarding them will posts about yoga, something I have never posted about. By the way, ***GO FOLLOW ME ON INSTAGRAM AND LIKE MY PICTURES CONCERNING PROJECT 3.***

This chapter is a great guide for the final project 3, but definitely does not get me excited. Instead, I am overwhelmed by the seemingly immense amount of work I still have to get done on this project.

Throughout the examples, Dawson Swan’s really caught my eye. His project consisted of a poster staked into a little red wagon filled with dirt and grass. That is commitment. Do not expect me to bring a red wagon to class on presentation day. That is all I am saying.

Design Reading Reflection

Although I have only just started the process of creating project three, I am already planning on the design process taking up a majority of my time on it. Creating something the follows a logical format and is visually appealing to its reader is what determines the success of a piece whether it is conventional artwork or writing.

While project three is a compilation of several different genres, it’s also very much a project based on our ability to present our ideas successfully. The readings provided lots of information, some of it helpful and some of it intuitive, that can be used to strengthen the presentation of our three pieces. The reading on page layouts was particularly helpful in explaining how to present material in a manageable way for readers. Most of the tips here are things that we already do as writers such as choosing appropriate fonts, arranging words based on their relevance, revising our work, etc. The reading on color scheme was also quite helpful. Project three is the first time that we’ve been allowed to really utilized different color schemes to evoke different emotions with readers. Understanding how to go about it effectively will be to our benefit not just in this class but in other situations in our futures.

Each of these readings discusses elements of effective design layouts and how to best present our work. I think that most of us go about the process instinctually. If we see something that looks awkward to us, we change it or adjust it in someway to make it more visually appealing. For me personally the hardest part in this is knowing how to use the tools provided to achieve a more successful design layout. I’m not tech-savvy or artistic so creating anything digitally has always been a challenge for me. I understand when something looks awkward or needs to maybe be adjusted but knowing how to is the problem and is another concern of mine moving forward in project three. These readings don’t teach you how to change that unfortunately.

Analyzing Visual Rhetoric The first part of the selection “Analyzing Visual Rhetoric” is very similar to what we have been doing all along in this course. You determine who the audience is, what the purpose is, what the genre is, and what the medium is. All along, we have been determining these genre conventions. However, this selection adds more. This calls you to look more at the structure, organization, and layout of a design. These are things we have never considered in detail. While this stuff makes sense, seeing it on paper is new to me. This reading tells you to look at margins, headers, lists, colors, and fonts. It reminds you to consider if some information would read more efficient in a list, graph, or table. When I read over this short section, it reminded me of Ms. B suggesting we do an infographic (I think that’s what it is called). All of these things would be very important if you were doing one of these for Project 3. After giving it more thought, I kind of regret not doing an infographic. I think this reading assignment would have helped, but I think it will still help with my blog. SFH Layout and Pages What I immediately noticed about these readings is that they would really be helpful for advertisements, infographics, resumes, and brochures. Luckily, the genres I chose for Project 3 are mostly already laid out and I don’t have much control over it, especially my Instagram. My blog post also has a predetermined layout, but I have options to change my text, add colors, and add specific features too. Blogs already have headings too, so it isn’t necessary for me to worry about those here either. I will definitely refer back to these when I am finalizing my blog and spending a lot of time on it. As of right now, I am focusing on getting my information out there. As I am forming my posts, I need to pay more attention to my fonts! My third genre is a collage. I don’t see how this chapter really relates to that genre because there isn’t any text that needs to be formatted, blocked, or rearranged. Overall, I think this reading would be very helpful if I would have chosen to do a brochure or advertisement like I had originally planned. Is it too late to change? SDH Images and Photos All of my genres incorporate pictures. My blog posts haven’t seen any pictures yet, but I plan on posting some. Every Instagram post is built around a picture. My collage is solely images. The reading states, “Photos and illustrations let you show readers – at a glance—aspects of your subject that would otherwise need lengthy description.” This is a big part of my Instagram genre. If I upload a picture of myself in a yoga position, it is so much easier to see and understand the position than trying to picture it in your head based of a text description. I am still deciding if I want to gather pictures for my collage from parenting magazines or from the internet. It will probably be from the internet since it is so easy to gather and so easy to edit to conform to the idea in my head.

Viral Marketing

When I looked at the assignment, I was quite confused, because I had never really heard the term “viral marketing” used before. However, as soon as I clicked on the Wikipedia website, I made the connection. I was quite happy that all of my genres for project three were all used as examples for viral marketing! 

This reading assignment was by far my favorite! Soooo many funny videos, my favorite definitely beign the sheep art and also the one with the german guy, “What are you s’inking?” I laughed probably too hard when I watched that

Anyways, on to the questions! Viral Marketing are campaigns posted on the internet and are then passed through social media. After reading all of the articles, and watching the videos, it is easy to say that the best way to capture an audience’s attention is by short but funny videos. This way, it makes the viewer want to share the video with others, and therefore the campaign gets more attention. To first attract attention, though, the company/person who made the advertisement needs to publish the ad where it pertains to an appropriate audience. If there was an ad for car insurance, the company will get more results if they first publish where they know adults with cars would see it. They would receive no luck by trying to advertise a car insurance campaign at a high school, because  teenagers don’t care about that. However, if the ad is humorous or even heart-breaking, it makes people interested, no matter the company producing the ad. 

These articles have given me plenty of ideas for my video that I want to produce to advertise my topic for project 3!

What is Viral Marketing?

The term Viral Marketing refers to the a very powerful and common marketing tool that companies use to successfully advertise their products and services by using the power of an active fan base spreading the message and doing the work for them. This form of viral advertisement, where the public shares the ads, can be much more powerful than normal advertisements and be at minimal costs.

What does it do?

Viral marketing strategies try to increase awareness and sales of a product or service. They function by stimulating the public to share their advertisement with friends and family. Through viral ads it becomes an efficient and easy way to spread information. As a result, companies lose control of their message as it is left to be controlled by the masses; actively sharing, promoting, attacking, and altering it.

How does it work?

Viral marketing campaigns create viral messages that will appeal individuals who are active in communication and will share it with many people. Viral advertisement are spread generally, from person to person. However, with the power of the internet, social media, smartphones, and TV a single person can share an ad with thousands of people. They often function through clickbait ads that lure people in through their appealing characteristics. The same appeal of the ad and the appeal to show others something funny, empowering, or entertaining, causes people to share the ad.

When does it work?

Viral marketing works when an ad evokes emotion, surprises an audience, and is not like a normal advertisement. These elements can lead to a successful ad that appeals to a wide audience of people who use social media and will spread the images, videos, texts, or websites ext through large mediums like popular social media outlets or TV shows. A viral marketing campaign must give the right message that is worth sharing, to the right person in the right environment.

I liked the 7 tricks to viral marketing website, because as you mentioned, one of  the best ways to capture attention is by surprising the reader and doing something unexpected. Even after I read the section header “Do Something Unexpected,” I was still surprised when I watched the video of John West and the Funny Bear, because who would’ve thought that a very convincing bear would fight back like that? It made me laugh, and even though I hate seafood, I would definitely consider buying that company’s brand!

I think it is very interesting to note that the viewers of the ad are actually doing the work for the companies by spreading the ad. I also think this is a very good point: “A viral marketing campaign must give the right message that is worth sharing, to the right person in the right environment.” I think a good example that goes with this statement is beer commercials during the Super Bowl.

Viral Marketing

What is Viral Marketing? Viral marketing is basically advertising in a way that appeals to a large audience. It can be spread easily, and that is the goal. For a company, this is one of the most important marketing components that need to be considered. What does it do? These ads have to catch the viewer’s attention and promote their product, service, or brand. These ads are put out, on the internet, social media, or wherever. Then, the goal is to have it spread so it is seen by as many people as possible. How does it work? Viral marketing can be spread through blogs, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, YouTube, or word of mouth, just to mention a few. If you post something on the internet, there is the possibility for it to be seen by thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, or more people. When does it work? Viral marketing works when it appeals to the consumers’ pathos, making them mad, making them happy, making them mad, or even surprising them. Then, people will want to spread the campaign. If you think about it, when you see a funny ad, you may share it with your roommate, your sister, your boyfriend, etc. That means it was successful and will continue to spread. The video that comes to my mind is the ad for Always. They focus on girls’ self esteems, entertain the idea of the phrase “like a girl”, and it definitely appeals to my pathos, enough for me to share it on my Facebook. That is successful viral marketing.

Here’s a story... about a puppy...

Once I left for college, I was forced to leave my 9 year-old, 18 pound grumpy Yorkie, Thumper, at home with my parents. They still send pictures of him per my request (even though they are less than 2 hours away). The transition away from your family and close friends to a university where you know no one can be very lonely… It had been my lifelong dream to get a bunny (yes, I know I said this was a story about a puppy). Knowing my mother did not want me to get a bunny and would not let me keep it at home, one day I spontaneously swooped up my boyfriend, made him agree to let me keep the bunny at his house, and took him to Pet Supermarket with me… Long story short, I dropped $300 on the cutest bunny ever and kept it for 3 whole days. Why? On the way home from this expensive trip, I broke out in hives. I was allergic to the cutest bunny in the world. My dreams were crushed. No exaggeration. I still get teary-eyed talking about. However, this brings me to my current story. I went to Pet Supermarket again (my mother has learned to hate Pet Supermarket). I almost bought a cat, regardless of the fact that I am very aware of my allergies to cats. On my way home I’m losing hope. Why am I allergic to all cute animals except Thumper? Why couldn’t I get another Thumper, but in puppy form? Thats when fate jumped off my phone screen and slapped me in the face. Scrolling down Facebook I see beagle puppies for sale. So what do I do? I buy the puppy. I buy the puppy food, a food bowl, a collar, a leash, and lots of pink toys. I name the puppy Sadie. I take Sadie to her new home in Tallahassee. I play with Sadie. I fall in love with Sadie. I get my heart snatched out. Wait. What? Yes. My mother broke my heart. Let’s rewind a little. I call my mother on the way home with my puppy. She was mad, and she yelled. I could handle that. “Whatever Mom. I paid for the dog with my own money. I will keep paying for the dog. It’s my responsibility, you won’t even know I have it,” I said. It quieted down for a few hours. I played with Sadie on the green in my apartment complex.  

She peed in the floor, and we’d run outside. All the while, I’m smiling because I have a cute puppy that I am not allergic to! I am happy. Until my mother calls me back. “I’m coming to get the puppy.” Two hours later, she shows up at my door. She walks in, “What all goes with the dog?” I put Sadie in her kennel, grabbed her toys, and sit on the couch. My mother grabbed the kennel and her toys and walked out the door. THE END. Literally, thats how it ends. Well, more so it ends with me crying dramatically and not going home for an extended period of time.

Why Puppies are awesome.

Puppies are great. They are even better than dogs, some might say. They are so cute. Some people prefer cats, lizards, or other animals, but puppies are the best. Even people who prefer cats over dogs will agree that puppies (or at least pictures of puppies) are adorable. Puppies are so energetic, so they do not tire easily. This is great for little kids who have so much energy because they can play with the puppies all day long and the puppies will keep up with them. Adults love to play with dogs as well, so even adults find the puppies’ energy levels great. Older dogs do not have as much energy as younger dogs, so they cannot play as long as puppies, and sometimes the older dogs are not able to play at all. The older a dog gets the less they are able to do. This is why puppies are fantastic because they can play for longer periods of time than older dogs. Puppies are great friends to have as well. They are so cuddly. Puppies will cuddle with all day long, and they love pets and belly rubs. People who own puppies will never be bored again. They will have a friend who will love them no matter what happens, and will play with them all day. Then, when the puppy finally becomes tired, the owner will be able to cuddle with the puppy all night long. Puppies are very loyal and lovable. Most of the time, they will wait by the door or the window to watch for the owner to come home. When the owner eventually does come home, the puppy will run up to the owner very excited to finally see them again. Puppies are also stress reliever. There have been many experiments that prove that even just a few minutes of interaction with puppies can reduce stress.

This is a persuasive genre. The writer tries to convince the audience that puppies are great, explaining all of the great things having a puppy entails. This composition is trying to convince the reader that puppies are awesome (I am convinced). Repeatedly, the writer talks about how great puppies are and all of the benefits of having a puppy, such as never being bored, always having a friend, and having something to cuddle all night long. This reading appeals to the reader’s pathos. The writer tells all the great things about puppies, specifically how they are so lovable, loyal, and cuddly. The tone is passionate and cheery because obviously the writer loves puppies and wants their readers too as well.

Ch. 9 Reflection

I was pleasantly surprised to see that the BBG had a short-ish chapter that we were finally able to read. Chapter 9 was all about revising your work and the importance of revising and editing a piece that you have worked on after peer review and observations have been done. I feel that revising after peer review is one of the most important steps of the writing process because it allows a set of new ideas and a brain full of new ideas to look over your paper and comment on ways to improve it. Revisions after this stage can make or break a paper because it’s when the writer learns if his or paper makes sense. If his or her paper gets the point across. If the reader can tell it’s written in the correct genre. College English classes have shown me the importance of having another person read over my paper and edit it before I write and turn in my final draft. This chapter was a good reminder of that, and it also gave several examples of great questions to ask the person who is peer reviewing your paper. I don’t think peer review will be used very much in project 3 because it’s more of a working project unlike a research paper, but I still enjoyed reading this chapter.

I also love having my compositions peer reviewed! It provides a whole new, unbiased perspective. It makes it much easier to revise since I would probably reach the point of “Wow, my paper sounds great to me!” if I were to review my own work all of the time!
