Presentation Reflection

Before I start I just want to congratulate everyone on being done with their projects! It was so amazing to see what everyones interests were and all the hard work you guys put in. I think two of the best presentations came from Zoe and Molly because the time and effort they put in to the project was evident.

First of all way to go Molly for being the first to present and having majority of the project completed before the break. I think her promotional strategies added to the over strength of the project, and the info graphs and flyers were really well put together. Additionally, I think the twitter that she made has the potential of becoming a “trending page” and could continue to gain attention even after the class is over. 

When I first heard the topic for Zoe’s project I didn’t know what to expect but I was completely blown away. The strongest component of her project (in my opinion) was the timeline. She was able to include so much information about the show in such an organized and interactive way that it made me want to read all the facts on my own time! Also, shout out to Zoe for being able to do that without any help from the digital design studio! I wish I would be that tech savvy!

All in all everyones project was amazing and I’m going to miss you all!

Most Effective Presentation- Final Reflection

The most effective presentation of the class was not necessarily the project that received the most likes, views or shares; it was not the project with the most riveting topic, most original goal, nor the craziest presentation topic. I thought it was the presentation that was completed with the most passion and effort, which in my opinion, was Allison’s. Her Facebook posts were mainstream, but the effort that obviously went into creating the YouTube video and interactive online book was more impressive than many of the other projects. Time is an often overlooked resource and in terms of college students, it is the most invaluable; so to see a project that was completed because of a genuine concern for the topic instead of a genuine desire to merely complete the project was refreshing. Not to say that other projects did not reflect a large amount of effort and time and sleepless nights, by no means, but only to highlight the creativity and effort that was used in Allison’s project. Even though there are many other sites and campaigns that promote the same issue, the fact that Allison is only in college and still created propaganda of the same caliber of these other professionals is in itself impressive. I hope that her book sees much success as time goes on and that her idea continues to grow and prosper.

Presentation Reflection

All the presentations have been so fantastic! It’s been so great to see everyone’s individuality and unique interests displayed in their research choices and presentation. It’s really hard to pick a favorite, but I will mention a few that I really liked. 

I really like Zoe’s topic because, as a member of the Doctor Who fandom, I thought her research and remediations and genuine interest in the community is awesome. Zoe, I really hope that you start watching Doctor Who. It’s so great and one thing you probably learned about the community is that we LOVE to see it grow. 

I also really liked Kyle’s presentation because I think he really made his Project 2 into an easily digestible form for broader audiences. His buzzfeed article was hilarious and I already shared it on my facebook. 

I think Molly did a good job on being effective and innovative with her genres. Let’s be honest, we all didn’t think that Project 3 was doable until we saw how Molly did her Project 3.

Assembling a Multigenre Project

I think this may have been the shortest thing we’ve had to read. I don’t mind. 

This chapter was pretty much about project three, it’s too bad all of my genres are done and now I’m just letting time pass while they circulate. This will be helpful when I try to label the things I’ve done cause right now I don’t know what to call them. 

I really liked the breakdown of the different options of genres for the dog paper, makes me wish my project two was about dogs, not newspapers. 

The book tells us that when we are breaking our projects down into genres, we have to consider a few things, like how we can ‘further out purpose’ how we reach our audience and what are modes and medias will be. Then it goes into the steps of a multigenre project, which are: 

1. Introduce your project. This means you write something that lets your audience know what everything is all about, and give information that will help them understand what they see. 

2. Put your pieces in an order that makes sense. The book gives the example where your project is on a problem/issue the first piece should be about the issue and the last part should be possible solutions. 

3. Give your project a title. Seems pretty self explanatory to me. 

4. Create your authors statement. This seems like the introduction to me 

5. Deliver it creatively. Don’t just put it in a folder, be better than that

Reflecting on Chapter 10 (BBG)

The title of chapter ten “Assembling a Multigenre Project” lets us know that the content of the chapter is going to directly pertain to what we’re doing in class right now. Project three is a multigenre project, and so a chapter that talks about how to assemble on is pretty helpful. Once again, The Bedford Book of Genres reminds us of the importance of our rhetorical situations, and reminds us to use the rhetorical appeals to our advantage.

The chapter then goes on to provide us with the steps to assembling a multigenre project. The “introduce your project and provide context” point should be helpful when we write our rationales for our various campaigns since we need to talk about the choices we made in each genre and analyze our pieces rhetorically. The chapter also recommends creating an author’s or artist’s statement for each genre, but I’m not sure if we need to do that for this class or if it’s just something to consider.

Unsurprisingly, chapter nine also includes a guided reading section that provides examples of multigenre projects. While these projects seem a little bigger than what we’re working on, I still think the information and examples are useful.

Reflection Chapter 10 BBG

Wow! It’s the last Tumblr post! Hurrah!! 

Even more, it was short! woohoo!

So basically, the chapter was the rhetorical situation, conventions, steps, an examples. For the rhetorical situation, you really need to figure out who your audience is so you can easily target them. If you’re topic is dogs, it doesn’t make sense to put all your work out into the cat lover community. Your work won’t get noticed, you won’t reach your community, and you’ll be sad that everything you did went to waste. And if you want to really get to your community, really emphasize the different rhetorical appears. Use cute pictures of puppies and say you’re a certified puppy expert for credibility! The fun thing about these kinds of works is that there aren’t really any conventions except that there has to be an Artist statement, or a purpose. 

You then need to introduce your project and give its context, arrange the pieces into a way that is most effective in getting a response out of your audience, it needs a title, it needs an artist statement, and it needs the finishing touch of a cute pink bow! Or maybe just good packaging. 

With all this in mind, the next step is Project 3! Good look, 26ers!

SFH Readings and Analyzing Visual Rhetoric 11.17.15

This was an interesting set of readings for this project. Being a self-proclaimed artist myself (I try not to get too carried away), I can say that most of the information I read about editing images and using them in projects (i.e. placing, cropping, and modifying) as well as using color schemes were all familiar concepts to me. I grasped them easily and can confidently say I see myself having no trouble in this department for Project Three. 

The section about fonts did peak my interest though. Because I plan on making a website for my Project Three to house my three genres, I now know that the best fonts to use would be san sarif fonts because they are easy to read on a computer or other digital device. I will also be sure to listen to the advice of using white space to your advantage when building my website. I will only be uploading three pieces to the page but clutter is easy to come by. To avoid clutter I will be sure to space everything out and maybe even put the genres on different pages. The final reading on analyzing visual rhetoric will be most helpful when doing a final revision of my project, as it is essentially a checklist on your project’s organization, readability, images, and layout, while as always analyzing its audience, purpose, genre, and medium.

It seems like a challenge, but you seem confident and I’m sure it’ll be amazing! I’m writing a blog post so I was really concerned with fonts as well.

SFH Readings and Visual Rhetoric Reflection

These readings were extremely helpful for working on Project #3 because it gave tips on how to make the topic seem the most appealing. 

I found the part about fonts,colors and organization to be one of the most helpful since I am creating a website for my project. Making sure the website has the right spacing, format, and fonts is important because that will determine the amount of feedback and comments I receive. Besides the feedback it is also important to the appearance of my website; if it looks bad then people won’t respond to it or just close it out on their computer. The same goes for the paragraphs: if they are too long or it looks boring people won’t read it. Including colors, fonts, and breaking up the text will help make it more appealing. 

It is also important when creating your website (or any other form of social media) to consider your audience. Who your audience is and the message you are trying to convey is extremely important when I am setting up my website. The questions for determining your audience in “Analyzing Visual Rhetoric”  will be useful when I develop my website and other forms of social media further.

Wow, a website seems like quite the undertaking! But thanks to these readings, you’ll spend less time worrying about the best fonts since the book gave a few good pointers on that. I’m writing a blog post on a blogspot blog I made so it was really helpful for me, too!

11.17.15 Readings

So these readings were pretty helpful for both our Project #3 and the ePortfolios. 

Basically, even though content is important and #1, no one will even look at the content if it is not presented well. If the page takes forever to load because I have to scroll 1 million thousand miles to read the blog post, I’m not going to read it. Sometimes it’s annoying to have to load new pages to finish an article, but it’s actually better. Cracked always breaks its articles up into a few pages because shorter pages make the material faster to read because of less loading time but mainly faster to exit out of in case you find that your boss is looking over your shoulder at work (not a joke, that really is an important reason why they do this). 

But what’s really nice about this reading is that it matches up with the stages of our Project 3. We’ve already gathered the information we read, so these readings are telling us how to present the information. The first reading gives us some helpful questions to consider when we are done with our projects. Depending on our answers to the questions it asks, it gives some helpful pointers to how we should edit our work to make it better. The second reading gives a lot of particular help with formatting as well, but in more detail. It’s really helpful to me because I plan on making a blog post for one of my remediations. The last article talks a lot about photo editing and use. I have not idea how to do anything with photos on the computer at all, so I’m staying away from that with my project. But overall, the readings were really helpful to give professional advice on aesthetics in your work.

Viral Media

Judging by the timing, these articles were assigned so as to incite us into creating viral campaigns for our project three genres. I suppose if a deodorant brand can do it, so can we.

Viral marketing is the use of media tactics to spread a concept or product like a virus. It travels between person to person, relying on audience participation instead of companies spending money on advertisement.

One article recounted the purpose, campaign, and reasoning behind the success of several viral media events. If I were to pinpoint the overarching lesson I gleaned from this article, I would say that becoming a viral success is almost entirely based on a combination of creativity of the campaign originators and a vacuum for that kind of humor in contemporary society. Some of the campaigns were new, like The Blair Witch Project, while others were seemingly hits by being in the right place at the right time, such as the Will it Blend project. All other things aside, I envy the man who gets paid to have a six-month holiday.

Both the Wikipedia article and thefuturebuzz.com explained what and how viral media campaigns function. Both articles mention the importance of environment: targeting a specific audience within a specific social context. They mention that an important part of any campaign is to start the process through an existing community. Instead of establishing a line of communication specifically for the advertised product, they suggest tapping into resources like Facebook and Reddit for pre-fabricated audiences waiting to receive your newest take on the chicken sandwich.

It’s so true they need to utilize an existing community. And doesn’t that make it easier, anyway? Instead of trying to create a network, it’s already there. I think it’s a way easier way for companies to market and it’s more effective. So it’s a win-win for everyone!

Viral Marketing Readings

Viral marketing is the use of preexisting social media outlets to advertise and/or market an idea or product by spreading it similarly to a virus. The point is the spread the message quickly and to appeal to many people along the way. The new form of viral marketing is therefore marketing through social media. “Viral marketing is the concept, social media is the tool” (wired.com).

               For this to be accomplished, three things must be in place: the right message, messenger, and environment. The message must have a “must-see” element to it. This will allow the messengers to pick up on it. There are three messengers that are needed for a viral message, and they are market mavens, social hubs, and salespeople. Market mavens are information specialists who see the message and then post it on their social network. Social hubs have large social connections and can act as a “bridge” between different subcultures. Salespeople will take the message and make it more sell-able so the social hubs will pick it up and distribute it. In terms of the environment, it is important that the timing and context be just right.

               Viral marketing only works if those that see the message on the web want to spread it. And the message only spreads if it is “seeded” properly; that is, it must be put on the right social media pages and be seen by the right people to get it to spread. Often successful campaigns use as many social media outlets as possible (I know that is what I plan on doing).

               It also only works if you get people to feel something, and so making a story is usually the best bet. Feel something, and you are more likely to press the “share” button. Once this happens, a viral campaign is most successful only if it doesn’t stop. Creating sequels often ups ones viral marketing to the next level.

               I’m not sure how I am going to pull this off, but with these readings, I do have a little more knowledge of how to get my Project three to go viral in the world of sorority girls.

Wow, I feel like you did a way better job than I did, haha. I really like how you split it up into three sections: message, messenger, environment. I was super scatter brained about it.... But the bridges is a good way to describe it. Often we think of corporations as separate “other” entities. But with social media, we can realize that their a conglomeration of people just like us. It creates a personal connection across an impersonal media.

So essentially, viral marketing is just utilizing social media and other populer web bases to promote your work or product. Instead of doing arduous work to promote yourself, you just use popular places and post the product there. So, instead of all the work of hiring someone to advertise for you on some other media, you can promote yourself on tumblr, twitter, facebook, etc. The goal is just to get the seer to think about the product. Awareness is the key to selling. Essentially, it sparks the viewer’s interest and lets them know that there is something out there that is worth their attention. Viral marketing creates a chain of advertising that begins in one place and flows form person to person as they share it with each other. In effective viral marketing, viewers share it with each other. Essentially, they do the advertising for you. If it effectively sparks their interest, through humor, or some sort of other feel-good measure, it will spread by itself. But how can this be done? Well, as one of the articles mentions, it’s about the story, not the product. But really, that makes sense! We don’t want to listen to someone sell us a product. No, we want something that will make us laugh or cry. We want those Publix holiday commercials that make us cry. We want the Bud Light commercial about the horse and the puppy that gives you the cute fuzzies. The goal isn’t to sell the product, directly. The goal is to make you think: “Hey, remember that adorable commercial with the puppy and the horse during the super bowl? Who made that? I want to find it on youtube and sob all over again.” This is where psychology meets marketing. But that’s a whole new spiel for later (but I’m nerdy so I think it’s a fascinating subject). But you can’t just put a video on youtube and expect people to find it, no matter how good it is. So you have to seed it. To seed it, you basically have to promote it on social media. That sounds redundant to put promoting and social media in the same sentence, since putting it on social media alone is promoting, but it makes sense. Have you ever seen Taco Bell’s tweet responses? Sometimes they’re downright sassy. They have nothing to do with tacos, but it leaves you thinking, dang, their attitude is as spicy as their tacos. And doesn’t that work better in the long run?

Surprise Rough Draft

Quite frankly I think that any discussion of personal political views is a terrible idea. Politics is one of those things that can quickly ensue an argument that makes situations out to be very black and white, even when they’re not. As a newly registered voter with the opportunity to vote in a highly public election next year, I can’t help but notice some of the broad trends that happen in our nation’s political system.

                                I’m only 18 years old, freshly in college, and pretty much have no idea about what actually happens in each televised political debate. What I’ve gathered from reading about things online, watching SNL skits (which I realize aren’t exactly reliable, but they do exaggerate actually tendencies), and general knowledge I’ve accrued over the years about the government. But honestly, I’m scared as a new voter in this country.

This seems to be a narrative genre based off of the idea that the author is conveying her emotions and fears. It’s kind of a story of her feelings. The purpose is to voice her feelings about voting. She knows that she isn’t the only one who feels this way, so the audience is the newly 18 individuals who can now vote but don’t really know how to make such an important decision and how to find the information to make that decision. The appeal seems to mainly rely on pathos because of the first person aspect and her willingness to share her sentiments. The tone is a little hopeless and the voice is one of a confused new adult. I was actually surprised by the design of the spacing in the paragraphs. It’s a unique structure and I was intrigued by how the structure connected with the writing. I think it’s a good parallel between the black and white of the first paragraph and the grey area of confusion in the second. I can tell the research just by the general reasoning and evaluation of the world around the author.

9 Month Old Puppy Surpasses Trump in Polls

Born and raised in a log cabin in North Carolina, Pupy, a 9 month old Golden Retriever, has risen as a potential presidential candidate with booming popularity. Statistics show that Pupy’s support is upwards of 24.3% of the voting population as of 7:59 am this morning, and the numbers continue to skyrocket. Pupy’s think tank, The Doge, has discovered that a large portion of voters are sleep-deprived college students in 8:00 am classes. 

To find out more about Pupy’s candidacy, we had reporters take to the streets of college campuses and to Washington D.C. One ardent supporter of Pupy on FSU’s campus voices her favor of Pupy: “I don’t know. He just makes me so happy. He’s loyal, loving, caring, giving, adorable, and fuzzy. I don’t think any other candidate fits the bill. But Pupy... There’s something special about him.” 

Another important political figure in D.C., who chose not to be named (but their name rhymes with Boe Jiden), speaks highly of Pupy: “Well, I’m not going to say if it’s our current president or not... But during at least one presidency within the past 6 years, Pupy maintained an important role in the Cabinet. In fact, the president hardly made decisions. Pupy always came to the rescue.” However, this speaker also had his doubts about Pupy. “He’s not the same as he used to be,” he continued. “He’s not as fuzzy and he’s not peeing on the carpet as much. He’s losing that flare of spontaneity that gives him his uniqueness. I think he’s getting old too fast.” 

Others have also voiced their disapproval of Pupy as president. One college student, who clearly has no heart or soul, used profane language to describe that Pupy is only a dog and how in the world could a dog be president. Another Washington official said that, “I don’t think Pupy could beat Trump because Trump is my dawg.” 

The support outweighs the doubt. Pupy continues to climb the polls and the Doge think tank predicts an outcome favorable to Pupy.

Chapter 9 BBG Reflection

Chapter 9 of BBG is all about revising and remixing your work. 

I know this is early but ya girl is trying to get her life together in these final short weeks left of the semester

I haven’t completely given up yet!

This chapter started out like how the majority of the chapters in BBG start out: reiterating information that we’ve already been exposed to/ already learned. For the most part (theres always an exception) most of us wouldn’t be in this class if we didn’t know how to revise our work already, most of us had to make revisions to our work after we met with BB during conference weeks. The section that discusses revision based on peer review shouldn’t come as a shocker to any of us because we’ve reviewed the work of our peer review groups for project 2 (S/O to my peer review group for being awesome!)

The part of the chapter that is the most important and applicable to us at this time is the part about remixing your work into different genres. Although it seemed like the most important section of the chapter was a little short compared to the part concerning revisions, the most important thing to take away from it is to understand which genres will be most effective. Determining which genre will be more effective is all dependent on the audience, rhetorical appeals, and purpose. 

Cant wait to see you guys on Tuesday and see the ideas that everyone has come up with for their project 3!

Chapter 9: BBG 11.8.15

While reading Chapter 9 in BBG, the majority of the information stuck out to me. Probably because I have heard most of it before, considering we are in the final weeks of the semester. When it came to Project 2, it is not an understatement when I say that peer reviewing helped me  craft my paper into something that I was truly proud to submit for grading. I relied on peer review to push me to make my paper the best that it could be. As I begin to work on Project 3, I see why the latter part of the Chapter is very important, specifically the checklist at the very end. There are many questions to consider when taking on such a large volume of work. While working on such a large project, I think it is easy to almost forget the most basic purpose of what you are creating. If the purpose is not clear to us, then how will it be clear to those we are trying to reach? The purpose goes hand in hand with the target audience. Are we trying to inform? Persuade? Convert? Or maybe a little of both? These basic questions then lead into the question of style and design. What genres are going to be the most effective. I know I will be asking myself all of these questions as I move forward with my project.

I focused more on the latter half of the chapter, so it was good to see a post with an emphasis on the first half! Peer review is definitely helpful and I always send big papers to certain people to read for me. I’m super glad they put those questions for peer review in the book because now I know what to ask whenever people read my papers.

Chapter 9 BBG Reflection

First of all, this chapter was 20 pages? Score. 

But really, let’s get to why this chapter is important.

I definitely think that the last segment about remixing your work is key to what we’re doing in this class. And of course, the best way to show how this remixing process works is to give an example. If any of you are struggling like I am to figure out how to put your topic into a relatable form that your audience would like, then this chapter is a heaven sent. What I’ve been confused about is if I should change my emphasis when I put my work into different genres and medias. In the book, the person turned their movie review into a 10 reasons powerpoint that was super persuasive and very informal. Yet, they got that from a review. So the possibilities are endless. You just have to unlock them... and I have to not be so narrow minded about the project’s possibilities. So it was really helpful to see a working and accurate transformation in the book. Hopefully I can accomplish it in the same way!
