âIt smellsâŠlike barbequeâŠyou can usually request a cook at an area next to the buffet to make ribs or stuff like that to eat. You donât have to ask me for permission, Reynault. If anything, you can turn around and Iâll guide you inside.â
As she said this, Ivara walked into the restaurant, gently tugging Reynault for him to follow so he could get a better view of the food being cooked. She notified the host at the front desk about needing a booth for two, as the man simply nodded his head and escorted them towards their seats. Not only were their seats away from other guests, providing some form of privacy, they were literally close to seeing the buffet food in its shimmering glory.
âEverything here is self-served, including drinks. Just notify a busser to gather any dirty dishes at your table. I hope you enjoy your meal with us.â After giving a small bow, the host simply walks back towards the front desk. Ivara sat on one end of the booth, bowing her head as if to give prayer. âTraveler, I pray that we donât get kicked out of this buffet. Let these two Titans enjoy a good meal without judgement on how much we serve ourselves.â A small laugh escaped her lips before looking at the blonde across from her, partially wondering on how much heâll eat. âIf they havenât kicked me out, surely weâll be fine.â
Reynault sat across from her and clasped his hands. âI am the Wall, stronger than steel, mightier than man, hungrier than I have any right to beâŠTraveler bless, here goes nothing, amen. Letâs eat!â And then he was up again, already moving toward the buffet, waving Ivara after him.
He managed to play it cool with his first plateâfor, indeed, it was only his first plate. It consisted mostly of meats. It wasnât long before he was back at the booth, plate in one hand and drink in the other. Should he have waited for Ivara? Maybe. After a few bites, Reynault glanced around for her.
Ivara scooted out from her seat and followed behind, giggling a bit from part of his prayer, as the smell of the food made her stomach growl impatiently. While noticing Reynault walk back towards the booth, she decided to give into temptation and grabbed three plates to load up: the first plate consisted of rice noodles and lo mein, the second had fried chicken and sausage, and the third plate with mash potatoes, gravy, and corn.
The small Titan slowly walks back, balancing the three plates onto one arm, with drink and utensils in the other hand. Once placing everything onto the table, Ivara seated herself back down, ready to devour everything in sight. Noticing how much she brought back compared to Reynault, she nervously laughed while rubbing the back of her neck. âEheheh~ Probably shouldnât have my stomach dictate how much food to get.â
Reynaultâs head tipped back in a full-bodied laugh. âOh man, Iâve done that a few times. I got some mean looks last time, though, so now I just get one plate at a time.â He pauses to wolf down a few bites of pork. âAnd I get a lot of plates. Iâm gonna be in and out a lot.â Another bite, and a satisfied hum.
The average civilian probably wouldnât be able to tell, but Reynault was making an effort to eat at a relatively reasonable pace, or as close to a reasonable pace as a stereotypical hungry Titan could get. He did eye a few items on Ivaraâs plates, making mental notes for his next trip up.
He was halfway through the plate before he spoke up again. âSo howâd you find out about this place?â
Ivara tried her best to not go through plates in seconds, but the minute Reynault asked that question: goodbye rice and lo mein plate. She sighed, bittersweetly, on how the dish was savoury yet gone too soon, as she looked up at the Titan across from her; his effort going unnoticed. Granted, the first time they cooked together, she ate normally due to wanting to leave leftovers, but with buffets- and sometimes the cafeteria- she was long gone.
âIronically, the ramen shop guy told me. After going through bowls like crazy whenever Iâd train periodically with Anton, I think the owner thought a buffet place would suit me better than having to keep up with me wanting more food in seconds. God, I apologized so much that day, and was honestly embarrassed.â Ivara took a sip from her beverage, the memory alone starting to hinder her appetite, as she placed the cup down on the table and laughed a bit; would that convince him that she was alright?
Reynault bit his tongue; while he, personally, found the story pretty damn hilarious, something seemed a little off with Ivaraâs reaction. Maybe she was still embarrassed.
He looked up for a moment, then shrugged. âRamen guyâs loss.â A bite of something steak-like. âSeriously, what kind of restaurant sends you to another restaurant, just because youâre eating food and paying money?â Another bite. âMm. I mean, come on, itâs not like we donât pay.â
Reynaultâs fork scraped across an already-empty plate. â...Merde. Clearly, this and the ramen guy are both actually the fault of...really sneaky Hunters, probably. Yeah, sneaky hunters! Cayde probably pays the ramen guy to keep his stall a Hunters-only thing. Or something.â
chevalier-on-the-wall:
âIt wonât be too long, Sky,â Reynault offered. His speech was already clearer; the welts on his face must be going down, thanks to his Ghostâs efforts. He plopped down on the ground, eagerly awaiting the chance to see his âinternet fameâ.
ItâŠwasnât pretty. He definitely saw the appeal in it, but he could feel Torch cringing. It caught him off guard, since he was a newer Guardian, his connection to his Ghost still forming.
Between that, and the way Skyler reactedâŠdiving in to save him, even though it was unnecessaryâŠit all left him feeling odd. Reynault had been goofing around, trying to be amusing, but all heâd accomplished was distressing the people he cared about.
âIâŠwasnât thinking,â he murmured, all his mirth gone. He wasnât sure if he was talking to Torch or to Skyler; maybe both. âI didnât mean to make you worry.â
Skyler wasnât paying much attention to Juungrucâs video, instead glowering down at the grass beneath them.
âI wasnât-!â the Titan snapped before taking a deep breath and rising to his feet. âI wasnât worried.â His words were softer, but still clipped. âLetâs just finish checking for Vex activity and report back.â
Skylerâs Ghost appeared then, peering at his Guardian critically. SkyâŠyou canât start shutting people out again.
Iâll be fine, The Sentinel replied as he checked his hand cannon. I justâŠwanna get out of here.
Juungruc watched the Titan retreat down the path, his mischief all but wiped away. Tucking his Ghost away, the Awoken turned to Reynault and patted his shoulder. âDonât worry, Rey, I donât think heâs pissed at youâŠitâs justâŠâ
The Hunter chewed on his lip, considering his words carefully for once. âSome Guardians are still kinda messed up over losing theirâŠyou know, immortality; even after the Red War.âÂ
Having to live without the Light, no matter how briefly, had been a shock to everyone. However, Skyler seemed to have been affected by it more deeply than most.
Juungruc leaned in closer, lowering his voice. âDuring one of our first Crucible matches, I saw him knock the helmet off of a Guardian on the other team. I thought he was just gonna bash her head in and be done with it, but he froze. He couldnât do it. Nearly had a full-on breakdown before Gryphon convinced Shaxx to stop the match.â
The Awoken got to his feet, offering a hand to help the wounded Titan up. âJust, donât tell him I told you that, âK?â
Reynault frowned under his helmet as he listened. The War was still fresh in his mind, too, with all its scars, even now. Of course a Guardian would be scared of losing a friend, of course a Guardian would be terrified of their own mortality, of course a Guardian might be reluctant to kill or condemn to death someone, anyone, who could be considered part of humanity.
And Reynault had run in, like the idiot he was, convinced of his own immortality, or maybe trying to reassure himself he still had it.
Now, he was just convinced heâd really screwed the pooch on this one.
He listened to Juungrucâs anecdote of the Crucible with increasing worry. There had to be some way to make it better, right? Or at least try? He had to try.
âIâm going to try,â he murmured inside his helmet. When he heard Torch make a curious mechanical chirp, he explained:Â âItâs my fault. Worried, angry, or whatever heâs feeling, Iâve got to try to make it better.â
Reynault then leaned over to whisper to Juungruc. âHey. How do I make it up to him?â

âNot bad for your third flight!â Blaine grins giving the other Titanâs shoulder a soft slap before squeezing it. âReally, you did wonderfully. Iâve seen ace pilots do worst.âÂ
It wasnât a lie either. Blaine had watched an elder guardian grind his ship into the side of the hanger once before. All the while, Reynault had landed nicely without incident.Â
âOpen up the doors, huh? Iâll take care of your lovely bird.â He patted one of the metal walls gently. They still had their âdateâ for later. Blaine lingered for a moment, trying to decide if he should give Reynault one last chance out of it. All things considering, it seemed like the right thing to do. Reynault obviously had a few comfort issues when it came to flirting and the closeness.Â
Blaine smiles reassuringly, even if he did back out Blaine couldnât be made with the other Titan. âIâll see you in a few hours huh?â
Reynault let out a breath he didnât know he was holding. He did it. He landed a ship--on his own! Mostly. Kind of. Close enough. He did it!
âAh, youâre just buttering me up,â Reynault teased as he hit the button to open the hatch. The doors creaked with rust, but otherwise worked without incident.
And then that question. He paused, looking up at the ceiling, then nodded, slowly at first, then more resolute. âIn a few hours. Call me when youâre off work, and I can meet you?â
Torch, resigned, hid away in his Guardianâs armor.
âAw, come on, itâll be fun!â Reynault gave his chestplate a reassuring pat, as if his Ghost could feel it.

âCareful there, knight, I might get the impression you donât like swooning for me.â The Sunbreaker snickers.
Blaine grinned at that. Reynault probably didnât mean to admit the words, but Blaine loved hearing them all the same.
âInto the hangar, just like when we left. Theyâll have cleared the floor once you get an okay.â Blaine instructs, offering Torch a wink as thank you. There was no harm in trying to butter up the Ghost. Especially, if he didnât like Blaineâs flirting.Â
It doesnât take much time at all before they get the okay to land. Blaine giving Reynaultâs shoulder one more soft squeeze. Reynault had this. He was already showing the ability to become an excellent pilot. Â
Permission granted. Flight path clear. No other ships nearby, for this brief, perfect window of opportunity. Reynault began guiding the ship in.
He found his way to the cleared bay in the hangar. Then he lined the ship up, spending more time fiddling with his positioning than necessary, and scooted in. He came a little close to clipping a frame with one wing, but otherwise it was without incident.
The landing gear extended, and the ship set down. Reynault held his breath for a moment, not yet letting go of the controls. His eyes darted over the interface, trying to see if he was forgetting anything.
(Continued from here)
âOh, yeah. Duh,â Skyler cast his gaze away from the other Titan, face heating up in chagrin. âI guess I still forget sometimes.â
He didnât want to admit the shot of panic heâd felt when heâd heard Reynaultâs pained cries.
Juungruc stepped over to the pair, a sly grin underneath his helmet. âYou sure about that, big guy? Itâs not exactly flattering.â
âCanât this wait until after we finish the patrol?â Skyler interjected, a bit of an edge in his voice.
The Hunter shrugged, crouching down next to Reynault and pulling out his Ghost. âHey, this is future internet gold weâve got here! And besides, Reynault deserves to view his shining moment before anyone else.â
Skyler huffed, plopping down next to the rest of his fireteam. âAlright, letâs see it. But if those killer bees come back, you guys are on your own.â

Blaine chuckled, shaking his head, at the thought. Maybe, prop him up against the bar, or even just carrying him around the City over his head.Â
Reynaultâs quick to point out the Tower in the distance. Blaine had probably flustered him too much. Poor guy. The elder Titan almost was starting to feel guilty about it.Â
âItâs too bad weâre saying goodbye for awhile hmm? I could probably fluster you all day and never get tired of it.â Though, maybe not while Reynault was trying to land. That would be the last thing the two of them needed. Reynault accidentally crashing into the walls of the Tower hanger because of Blaineâs flirting. At least the thought of standing in front of the Vanguard for such a grievous crime was amusing, even if the days of work after wouldnât be.
âJust for a while,â Reynault assured. âItâs not going to be long. Then you can get right back to making my head swim.â
Did he just admit that? Oh, jeez. Next time they met, Blaine was going to lay it on him so thick. It would probably stay in the realm of harmless fun, though. Right?
Too late to do anything about it now. Reynault refocused on the flight path and the City ahead, starting to slow down the ship. âSo I just...dock? Where?â
âCity, this is unnumbered Guardian vessel, salvaged from the wilds,â Torch filled in as he opened the comm channel. âWe are on approach. Requesting permission to dock.â
Reynault gave his Ghost a grateful smile.

â° â â * "I got stung once and Iâm immune. Go ahead and sting me, bees! It does nothing!" (from: chevalier-on-the-wall; one-off interaction or thread, your choice!)
âUmâŠI donât think those bees are like the ones back on Earth,â Skyler cautioned.
The lush jungles of Venus harbored many exotic creatures; but these large, red insects swarming around the other Titan did not look like ones that should be meddled with.Â
âLeave him be, Sky,â Juungruc waved away his teammateâs worry from his perch in a nearby tree. âHeâs just trying to make friends with the bugs. Itâs cute!â
The Sentinel huffed, tilting his head back to regard the Awoken. âJuun, we donât know ifâŠwait a minute! Are you recording him?!â
Juungruc tensed, glancing at his Ghost. ââŠMaybe?â
Skyler rolled his eyes âYou have got to be kidding-â
âOk, ok, you got me!â The Hunter interjected, pushing himself off of the branch and onto the ground. âIâm just waiting for something hilarious to happen! Then we can upload this bad boy and itâll go viral! Think of the views!â
Even with his helmet on, Skylerâs utter disappointment was palpable.
âReynault, be careful!â He called over to the blonde, concerned. âFor all we know those things could chew through your armor!â
@chevalier-on-the-wall
With the firm belief in his own invincibility that can only come from being a Guardian, Reynault waded into the swarm of red insects, arms spread wide and bellowing challenges through his helmetâs speakers. âYou canât hurt me, bees! I am immune! I am your master now!â
A few of the irritated insects made little âplikâ noises as they bounced off his armor, unable to find purchase. It seemed like his armor would keep him safe from the swarm.
Until he took it off.
In an act of unprecedented, ego-inflated stupidity, Reynault removed his helmet, determined to prove just how impervious to bee stings he really was. âCOME AT ME, BEES!â he screamed through the barely-breathable atmosphere.
As the swarm swirled around him, one insect did indeed sting his exposed head, right on the cheek. And another got his ear. And another got his neck. He yelped in pained surprise each time, his confidence quickly evaporating in a frantic burst of phrases involving âputainâ. Each attempt to swat them away was in vain, as the swarm only grew thicker.
âSky! Juun!â Reynault called desperately, lungs partially sustained by his Ghostâs healing at this point. âThese arenât bees! HELP!â
âHoly crap!â Juungruc crowed, pointing excitedly. âHeâs taking off his helmet!â
âHeâs what?!â Skyler gasped, wheeling around. Sure enough, Reynault had thrown off his helmet in a display of dominance over the swarm of insects. Unfortunately, the bees (or whatever the hell they were) took the opportunity to strike without mercy.
âReynault, what the hell are you doing?!â The Sentinel cried, rushing over and yanking the other Titan back. The angered bugs turned on him then, jabbing their stingers into his armor.
Growling in annoyance, Skyler swung his arm and unleashed a burst of Void Light into the swarm. Many of the insects were instantly atomized, with the rest zipping away to save themselves.
Knowing that they wouldnât be deterred for long, Skyler picked up Reynaultâs helmet with a long-suffering sigh. He turned around and winced at the painful-looking welts that peppered the armorsmithâs face.Â
But at the same time, he couldnât help but chuckle pityingly at the poor Titan. âYou really showed them, Rey.â He secured the helmet over Reynaultâs head, careful not to aggravate his wounds.
Meanwhile, Juungruc had slumped against the tree, overcome by guffaws. âHe wasâŠhe was all like âHelp me, guys! Help me!â I got it all on video!â The gleeful Hunter wheezed, clutching at his abdomen. âOhâŠoh stars, it hurts!â
Reynault winced at the flare of Void Light, shielding his eyes. But once the swarm was gone, he was more than willing to let Skyler do whatever to him, with little more than pained groans of protest.
He was fairly certain he was looking at yet another stupidity-induced death, what with the combined stings and the lack of oxygen, until his helmet snapped back into place over his head. With his air supply restored, his beleaguered Ghost could focus on soothing pain and removing welts.
Wearily, he looked up at Skyler. âYou couldâve just let me die, you know. I wouldâve been alright,â he mumbled through the stings on his lips. Because...the other Titan had basically saved him, hadnât he? That was...weird. Reynault wasnât used to being rescued - at least, not without immediately running back into battle to cover for his rescuer. He wasnât sure what to think.
Juungrucâs laughter broke his train of thought. A recording? Not surprising. Luckily, Reynault was the kind of person to laugh at himself. âHey, can I get a copy of the footage?â
Cheval Mallet
âSounds like a plan.â Blaine nods. Though, he hadnât missed the Ghostâs little twitches and seemingly all-knowing glare at Reynault before. Blaine was under the impression the little sunshine might now like him whether Reynault knew or not. Not that the Sunbreaker was going to act on anything. After all, he was still pretty much a stranger.Â
Blaine laughs. Oh, he was going to push again.Â
âEven if you are. I can assure you that I donât mind at all you being my heavy burden.â Saying that wasnât laced in a bit of a sultry tone was an understatement. But what was Blaine to do? Reynault was the one who kept setting him up.
Reynault felt the hairs on his arms stand up. âAre you sure? I wouldnât mind if you just...propped me up, set me down, fling me over something....â There was no way to make this not sound suggestive, was there. Or maybe there was, and Reynault just wasnât thinking clearly. He didnât know. He didnât really care.
He did care when the City appeared on the horizon. âOh hey, itâs home. Time flies when you do, huh?â Much as levity was his default, he actually rather hated how heâd changed the topic. At least Blaine seemed very good at turning all his jests into come-ons. Maybe the other Titan would come up with another one.
