This handsome guy had his first chiropractor appointment today and handled it like a professional. Did you know you can adjust horses knees? I e been around horses off and on for 25 years and just learned that today, it was wild. Big boy seems to be feeling great after getting cracked and I’m excited to see if there is any difference under saddle tomorrow.

Chiropractor was overall impressed with him given he’s only three months out from the kill pen and we have no prior history on my sweet old man. She did note some arthritis in his knees which is unsurprising when you account for the pigeon toes, slight bench knees and his age.

Also looks like he’s more of a liver chestnut under that winter woolly. Barn owner was even debating the possiblilty of a chocolate palomino...

It’s amazing what some good farrier work can do. There’s still some more work to be done but obviously it’s never good to do too much at once. Baby steps.

My excellent old man. This saddle is t a perfect fit but it’s a good temporary especially to just lunge in. He did great and even did better about accepting the bit today. This was my first time fully tacking him up and he handled it like an old hand and moved out pretty well.

He even accepted weight in the stirrups and me laying across his back from the mounting block with out moving a muscle. He didn’t seemed thrilled but he was good. Tomorrow, god willing, I’ll get to ride him for the first time!

My newest blm mustang had her first dressage show today. Absolutely blew me away. She’s been in captivity for 6 months, and has only been under saddle for about 3 months. She’s going to be a force to be reckoned with.

This is super common for dogs from combat situations. Military dogs, police dogs, ect DO retire with PTSD. And often, another companion animal will help them just like Pixie does here. It’s almost like an emotional support animal for retired veterans.

Chewy did great for the dentist yesterday too. He said Chewys teeth are in great shape, just really sharp so he filed them down. I asked for his idea on Chewys age and he put him closer to 18-20 and said that after 18 attempting to age by teeth it just about impossible.

Then he also pointed out that Chewy has a offset knee “real bad” on his right front leg, which is the one that toes in a bit more of the two. I knew he was slightly pigeon-toed when I bought him and debated the pros and cons of it before going through with the purchase but didn’t notice his knee. Nor did my friend who I brought with me. I really don’t think it’s as bad as this dentist made it to be, I think he was just being ugly about me buying from a kill pen honestly. Plus we were in a stall and Chewy was laid back on the wall, head being held up by a crutch drugged up to be floated and he wasn’t straight in the stall at all so I kind of just doubt his assessment. He probably does have a slightly offset knee but I don’t believe it will be a problem. I’ve worked him lightly W/T/C in the round pen and he’s never made a lame step yet.

Besides, I’m just looking for a trail horse that I can enjoy and love on right now and Chewy has the right mind and clearly enjoys my company and I enjoy his. Even if he is 18 instead of 15/16 like we thought, big whoop. Vaquero was 18 when I got him and he was excellent and I rode him for five years with no issues. I took the dentists comments really personally to be honest, but I’ve also come to realize that I don’t care if he thinks I’m an idiot for buying Chewy. Chewy spoke to me for some reason and I went into objectively and looked at multiple horses before deciding on him. So far this horse has given me no reason to doubt him or my choice. I have no regrets.

On a positive side, my friends are coming out Sunday to try saddles on him with me and hang out which is nice because I haven’t seen a few of them in at least a year. ❤️

The most excellent Cookie Monster was very well behaved for the vet today. Took all his shots like a champ and I’ll give him a round of QuestPlus tomorrow just to make sure we’re good to intergrate with other horses this weekend when he comes off quarantine.

Also he let me pick out all four hooves loose, in his field, with no fuss. He’s such a sweet, levelheaded boy, I keep wondering how he wound up so close to shipping to Mexico.

Vet is supposed to be here sometime after lunch today. BO is supposed to text me about 30 minutes prior to Chewys turn so I have time to get out there, definitely a nice plus to working only 10 minutes away!

Fingers crossed he remembers his manners and does well. He’s a good boy, so I’m betting we’re ok but he seems to get a bit anxious when there’s lot of activity still.
