@cheyenne-davis
No one knew how lucky he was more than Michael. āYeah. He says Iām his Jiminy Cricket. I get away with a lot and he..he takes care of me. Iām really lucky.āĀ
He was lucky when the focus came off of him. He was never very good at being the center of attention. āAre you almost done with school. I bet it would be nice to not have to do school and work at the same time.āĀ
He laughed at the dumb blonde comment. āMy mom says itās lucky Iāve got a nice disposition or Iād be the epitome of the dumb blonde joke.ā He chuckled. He realized that to someone else it might sound unkind, but that was just how his mom was.Ā
Their turn came at the counter and Michael turned his attention to the cashier. āCan I get a mini burger with cheese and an order of garlic fries. Andā¦ā He turned to Cheyenne, āwhat would you like?ā
Cheyenne raised a curious eyebrow at Michael's comment about his boss. He may have been incrediblyĀ self-deprecating but his boss was seemingly making up for it. Instead of expressing his thoughts, however, Cheyenne calmly flashed Michael a smile and offered his (mostly) unbiased support, "Nice."
"Oh, no. I've got about a year left." He supposed that a year wasn't that long but some had managed to complete their schooling in less time than that. It wasn't an option for Cheyenne though, he couldn't afford to put all of his focus into school. "Did some slacking off after gradation. Kind of making up for it now." Cheyenne paused, thinking over what Michael had said, "It'll be over soon, hopefully. I don't want to be a waiter for the rest of my life."
A smile cracked open his lips but he couldn't bring himself to make more than a scoff. "She's funny." It was a dry comment, you could almost detect the forcefulness of it. He was sure that Michael's mom was a decent person, though he couldn't be certain without knowing her, but the remark had hit a little too close to home for him. What may have been a sarky, but innocent, remark for Michael's mom could have been said with sincerity by Cheyenne's.Ā
His stomach growled while they waited in line. Cheyenne tried to stifle it by putting his hand over his belly but it was better to hope that the lunch crowd had covered the noise instead. When it came time for him to choose his lunch, he could hardly decide. Everything on the menu looked good to him. Finally, after much contemplation and silence, he ordered. "Just a regular hamburger, the works. A medium fry. Oh, and a large coke." Cheyenne looked back at Michael, he needed reassurance that what he had ordered was okay.
"Hair and makeup, huh? That actually seems really hard. Like you have to get things just right. People get particular about that stuff. Mr. Pruce used to have the same hairdresser for like years. One time he messed up and he was going to fire him and find someone new. I told him that was kind of mean thing to do and heās all like," he does his best imitation of Jackās English accent. āāMichael oneās appearance is very important. I am putting myself in the the manās hands and I must be able to trust him.ā I get it, but I told him it was still a dick move to fire the guy for one bad haircut. Luckily he usually listens to me when I tell him heās being a dick."Ā
He thought about Cheyenne and wondered if all people who did hair and makeup were easy going like him. He supposes they must have to be. āYou must have good hands.ā He immediately realized how that sounds and starts stuttering and backpedalling. āI mean you must work well with your hands, I mean ā¦Jesus, just shoot me know. You know what I mean. Itās precise work.ā He lets the heat in his cheeks die down again and then continues on with the conversation. āSo you cut your friends hair. Thatās really cool. Seems like theyāre getting most of the benefit and youāre doing all of the work. It would be very convenient to have someone come to your house to cut your hair. Not everyone can get out all the time, you know.āĀ
"Nah, Jack, Mr. Pruce, isnāt famous or anything. Mostly he deals with the money side of things. Deals with contractors and vendors and things like that. Heās like the king of the in house lawyers." He thought about how is job must sound to others. It always sounded like a personal assistant was a personal slave and to some extent he was. He did what Jack needed when he needed it. There had been more than one occasion where the what had been pick up a box of condoms and the when had been 3Ā oāclock in the morning. And it always made Jack sound like an asshole and, well, he kind of was, but he was also kind and always took Michaelās health seriously. "Yeah, thereās a fair amount of bitch work, like picking up his dry cleaning, but honestly I donāt mind. I like the work. My boss trusts me with a lot and I get paid well. But you know you shouldnāt say ājust a waiterā Serving is one of the hardest jobs I can imagine. I only have to deal with one asshole and heās an asshole with a heart of gold. You have to deal with many assholes all day long and youāre going to school on top of that. And when youāre not doing either of those, you moonlight as a hero, saving lives of hapless PAs."He laughed and followed Cheyenne into the restaurant.
The smell of fried food hit his nose and triggered almost instantaneous salivation. Ā He hustled to catch up to Cheyenne who was chuckling good-naturedly. He really liked that about this guy. He laughed easy and open. So many people were too serious all the time. They got behind a woman in a bright summer dress. That was something that always amazed him about San Francisco. You can see someone bundled in a ski parka walking next to a girl in a bikini and shorts. This year the city had decided to give spring a pass and go right into summer, with a slew of warm 75° days. āIām not really sure, but I keep thinking about getting breathe tattooed on my chest, but upside down so I can look down and remember.ā He reddened again when he realized how stupid that sounded. āNot that I need to remember to breathe, but I forget that Iām lucky if I can just do that. Ummm⦠do you have any that are special to you?ā He shuffled up the line as the girl began her order.
Cheyenne's nose crinkled as he thought about what Michael was saying. He had a point, people could be quiteĀ particular when it came to their appearance. "I've been reprimandedĀ before and It was kind of embarrassing but I'm more careful now." He kept listening to Michael, his eyes darting across the blond's frame as he followed his somewhat theatrical telling of a past experience with his boss. "Wow." Cheyenne responded, his expression was blank at first but quickly lightened up into a smile, "Dude, you've gotta be close to your boss. If I said anything like that to mine he'd probably fire me." There was no doubt about it. Cheyenne had never meant to get on his boss's bad side but he had a tendency to be rather loud and there was a week where he couldn't make it on time for the life of him and his reputation had yet to recover from it.Ā
Michael seemed to be stumbling over his words and Cheyenne was patient enough to let him get through them. He found Michael's slip ups kind of endearing, if not completely awkward. "Oh, right. I get you." Cheyenne laughed off Michael's remarks in an effort to not take them so seriously. He thought about toying with him, flirting around a bit, but the guy was already blushing harder than a spring flower. "I'm pretty decent. I've had a lot of practice. I didn't go into school until recently, but I've been doing this kind of stuff since I was in high school." Cheyenne bit his lip, he was almost ashamed of what he was about to say, "I can't really do things for free though, and I'm busy a lot, so unless they come into class it's not really that convenient for anyone."Ā
"As long as he treats you right, it's all that matters." As the words left his lips there was a dip in his stomach because he knew that what he was saying was true but it wasn't something he had always lived by. When you were put in situations that Cheyenne had been in, there were times when you had to take whatever you got, even if it wasn't ideal. "Plus, it sounds like a killer job."Ā He could feel his eyes widening as Michael praised him endlessly. Letting out a sigh, "Trust me, I'm just a waiter." Cheyenne wasn't used to this and to be honest, he didn't need his ego to be inflated. If anything, he felt like Michael needed to spend some time on himself.Ā "It could have been anyone, man." He didn't feel like a hero, Cheyenne could have easily kept on walking had he not looked up but then wouldn't be stepping into a restaurant with Michael, he would still be at the scene trying to recover from witnessing an accident.Ā
It seemed like Michael had given a lot of thought to what he would get a tattoo of. "Oh, good. I didn't want to make a 'dumb blond' joke." He nudged Michael with his elbow teasingly, "Nah, but really that sounds cool." The way Michael cut himself off made Cheyenne believe there was more to his idea but that he didn't want to talk about it. Cheyenne moved forward in line and turned so that he was facing Michael, "Well," His cheeks became rosy as he tried to avoid eye contact with Michael, "I'm sure they meant something at the time." He couldn't think of a single tattoo that had a heartfelt story behind it. "They're all pretty random. I've let people color all over me." Cheyenne had his favorites, and a few he didn't like to show people, but overall he didn't regret any of them.Ā
"You manage work and school? I donāt think I could do that. No scratch that, I know I couldnāt do that. School wasnāt really my thing anyway. What are you studying?" Cheyenne was more than just a lifesaver he was a truly interesting person. He also was easy going and didnāt seem put off by Michaelās nervousness which was a definite plus in his book.Ā
"Oh, Iām a personal assistant. I sort of work for Twitter, but really I work for Mr. Pruce. I do whatever he needs me to do personal or work related. KInd of a glorified maid, secretary, butler, valet kind of thing. Itās hard work, but I like it. I like feeling useful and I meet a lot of people. And I love my boss. He gave a kid outta high school a job that I had no business getting." He thought a moment about his work/home life balance. "Itās definitely a round the clock kind of job, but I canāt blame the job. The reason I donāt have a social life is ācause Iām a dork, who and, I donāt know, I guess itās easier to just work a lot."Ā
"Donāt get me wrong, Iāve happily lived with my mom for the last 21 years. It was just time, I guess. I didnāt mean to suggest it was bad. I had to prove to myself I could do it, that I donāt need to be taken care of." He had a moment where he knew heād said to much and nervously checked his hearing aid.Ā
He was happy when the topic switched to Mill Valley. āYeah itās just up 101 about twenty minutes or so. So basically Iāve been in San Francisco my whole life too. Mom spends so much time in the city I always wondered why she didnāt just move here. Itās a really quiet place and well, Iād be lying if I didnāt say it was lot more, ummm whatās the word. Itās kind of one of those places that used to be kind of a hippy nature town and now a lot of rich people live there. Itās a nice place to grow up though. Lots of trees and creeks and trails. I like the city better though. Itās just so alive and noisy and eccentric, you know?āĀ
Michael couldnāt help the delighted laugh that burst out as Cheyenne quickened his pace, pulling ahead of him and turning to walk backwards while telling the spider story. He admired the tattoo on the guyās elbow. āNah, I like it. Besides you were startled not scared, right?ā He chuckled easily as he opened the door to Super Duper. āI like your tattoos. Havenāt been brave enough to get any.āĀ
"Yeah." Cheyenne nodded his head, "I'm studying hair and makeup. It's not like a regular college." He couldn't imagine going through more conventional schooling. High School was enough of an experience for him and he didn't want to waste his time with classes he didn't need. It wasn't like he could afford them anyway, he was barely scraping by already. "Sometimes my hours suck or overlap but the classes are pretty fun." Cheyenne lifted his hand and patted Michael on the head, "And I get to experiment on willing participants."
"I have no idea who that is." His lips turned into a grin before he started to laugh, "Is there a Social Network style movie about him?" It seemed like Michael had made something of himself and Cheyenne could find that admirable. Cheyenne was finding it hard to ignore the way Michael put himself down though. He didn't appear to be that bad of a guy so he didn't understand why he didn't have anything nice to say about himself. The blond was doing a hell of a lot better than Cheyenne and he was only a year older than him. "But it's kinda wicked. I'm just a waiter." Cheyenne thought of Michael's job a bit more before continuing, "He doesn't give you like Bitch work though, right?"
Cheyenne understood where Michael was coming from even though he didn't relate much. He had stopped trying to prove to anyone that he could take care of himself when it became apparent that it was actually a part of his life. "Oh, yeah. I mean, you've gotta grow up sometime." Cheyenne shrugged, "It's okay. I'm not bothered. I've thought about leaving before but it's not something in my future right now. I'd probably fall on my face without a home to come back to." Or, and this was more likely and he hated to even consider it, he'd come back to find his mom face down and in trouble. It was an image that often popped up when he thought about leaving and it was one that kept him around.
"Sounds like a nice place to live." It really did and he wasn't sure if he had an excuse for Michael's mom but he tried to come up with one anyway, "Maybe it was just too much for her? It is pretty loud, like you said, and it can be a problem for some people." Cheyenne chuckled, "Oh, man. Yeah, it's so lively here. I don't think I could handle living somewhere else. It'd be way too dead. Plus, I'm noisy as fuck so I'd just annoy people if I lived anywhere else."
"That's it!" He agreed with a heavy bob of his head, "Startled." Cheyenne slipped between Michael and the door and entered the burger joint. "I'm not sure brave is the right word. Some might say reckless. But I don't listen to those people." He winked as he waited for Michael to catch up. "I've probably got enough for you. We can share them." Of course he was joking but he wasn't going to push tattoos onto the guy. He didn't want to make Michael feel bad for not having any. "But, if you were to get one, what would you want?"
"Cool. So Cheyenne you live in the city or are you visiting?" If it wouldnāt make everything worse he would slap his forehead with his palm. What would he do next? Talk about the weather? He couldnāt help cringing at the thought. "Iām sorry. I donāt really have much of a social life. Basically I just work and umm well, work, but donāt get me wrong. Iām pretty grateful. Itās a miracle I have the job so I really should be grateful. And itās my own fault that I donāt make the time for having a social lifeā¦"
He looked over at Cheyenne and realized that he had been rambling on about stuff the guy really didnāt want or need to hear about. āUmmm, yeah, so do you live here in the city? I just moved from Mill Valley a few months ago. I like it and the commute is definitely better. Also probably good Iām not living with my mom anymore. Not that itās a problem living with my mom. Sheās great and not really ever home anyway, but still twenty-one year olds with jobs probably should leave the nest right? The city is a lot different than Mill Valley though soā¦ā
Dammit he was rambling again. This time he did smack his forehead. āSave me again will ya? Just take over the talking for a bit while I try to be a normal person. Did you really fall because of a spider?ā
"I've pretty much lived here my whole life. There's been a few other places that I've temporarily called my home but I always end up back here." He had never considered leaving San Francisco. It was the perfect city for him to live in and after doing some mild traveling he came to the conclusion that it was the only place he was meant to be. "It's fine. I'm actually worried that someone might catch us. My friends probably think I've been blowing them off and here I am having lunch with you." His words were half in jest but there was a hint of sincerity too. "I'm usually pretty swamped between work and school."Ā
Cheyenne couldn't hold back his curiosity any longer, "What's your job? Like what keeps you from having a social life." It seemed pretty serious, whatever it may have been, and definitely several steps above being a waiter. He didn't want to knock his job though. It didn't pay a lot and the hours could be exhausting but it got him through each month and that was enough for him.
He couldn't help but chuckle as Michael babbled on about not wanting to live with his mother. "Um, I live with my mom." Cheyenne didn't want to admit to a total stranger that his mom was more dependent on him than he was of her but he couldn't resist bringing up his living situation. "We've lived in the ame house for as long as I can remember. I don't think we've ever moved." He could think of countless times where they almost lost the house but they had always managed to keep it and he was grateful for that. It wasn't much but it as better than living on the street. He had tried it once and decided never again.Ā
"Oh, really? I've never heard of it. Is it like a small town or something?" Cheyenne was going to feel rather stupid if it was a place he should have recognized, especially if it was nearby, Ā but he couldn't stop the words from spilling out of his mouth. His curiosity got the better of him. "How's it different?"
Cheyenne quickened his pace and switched positions with Michael, he was now walking in front of him but was walking backwards so that he could see the blond's face. "Hah, yeah. It was under a step and it tried to jump out at me, or something, it may have just been there. It just scared the shit out of me, and I'm not even afraid of spiders." He pulled up his sweater sleeve to reveal a web tattooed onto his elbow, "Might as well get it removed." Cheyenne adjusted his sleeve and turned himself around so that he was walking alongside Michael, "Anyway, I fell. Scared some guy. Hella embarrassing. And my ass still hurts."
"No? I donāt think so. I think mi hermano would laugh at me if I told him I wanted to try and switch something I cared deeply about to something of lesser value ā it is not the point of lent. But, sorry⦠que? Que es un smorgasbord? I-Iāve never heard that word, actually, but a buffet does sound good right now. Do you know if thereās one around? I-I donāt think Iād want to go alone, but I am not opposed to the idea of bringing a new friend along with me."
"Oh, I'm not really familiar with lent. I wasn't raised with any kind of religious beliefs. It's like a buffet. Maybe Scandinavian? But it's just a bunch of different kinds of food together. I think. Um, there aren't that many good buffets around here. I guess there's Curry Village, if you like Indian food? But I wouldn't totally recommend it or anything. There's a seafood grill place around here too. I'm pretty sure it's Japanese. If we can find a place though, I'm up for going with you. No one wants to eat alone. At least I wouldn't, it's kind of sad."
"Jeez, I canāt believe I was just about to walk off into the street. Seriously who does that?" He paused to make sure that Cheyenne was following along. "Well, me I guess. Iāve got about twenty things running through my brain all the time and I donāt always stop to just see whatās going on around me. My mom says Iāve got brains, Iām just not very situationally smart. I remind her that I just about flunked out of high school so according to the system Iām not anything smart."Ā
As they passed by the dry cleaners he had a sudden thought. āHey do you mind if we stop here for a sec.ā He would have normally stopped and actually let the guy answer, but he was just feeling so excited he kind of forgot. āItāll just take a minute I promise.ā He turned from Cheyenne to the elderly woman behind the counter. āMrs. Hernandez can I leave these here for a bit. Iām going to have lunch with my friend and I donāt want them to get all wrinkled. Pretty please. Iāll bring back some french fries from Super Duper.ā He smiled at her widely already knowing the bribing was unnecessary. She agreed and reached over the counter to pinch his cheek. Which had him blushing when he turned back to Cheyenne. He quickly left the dry cleaners trying to will the heat in his cheeks away.Ā
"Sorry about that. Just didnāt want to wrinkle the bosses shirts. Letās get those burgers now."
Cheyenne's eyes widened as Michael seemed to beat himself up. "Hey, it happens? Shit, the other day I fell in front of some guy that I didn't even know. All because of a spider." He could laugh about it now, and even then, but he thought it might make the guy feel better. "But you graduated right? So, that's cool." Cheyenne had never been an outstanding student but he got by with decent enough grades. "If you're willing to learn then you're probably not that stupid." He didn't have a giant ego but he definitely didn't feel self conscious about much. Part of him hoped that his optimism would rub off on Michael.
As they walked along the sidewalk he found himself stopping abruptly. His mouth opened to give Michael an answer but he was cutoff before he could say anything. Cheyenne followed Michael into the dry cleaners and waited for him to finish with his exchange. It had never occurred to him before, but Cheyenne had never been inside one. He didn't have any clothes worth preserving and he usually just crammed as much into a washer as he could. It didn't take him long to realize that Michael wasn't there for himself though and that got Cheyenne thinking about the man's desk job again. Once Michael was facing him, he could tell that he was blushing and Cheyenne offered a smile in response.
"It's okay." He shrugged off the disruption because it wasn't really an inconvenience to him. Cheyenne had been on his way home but he didn't know what he would eat when he got there so it wasn't like Michael's delay was getting in the way of anything. "Awesome. Lead the way, man. I'll follow."Ā
"Hi Cheyenne." He thought the young man would turn him down, but was pleasantly surprised when he got an acceptance. "Really, cool. I usually just end up eating at my desk. This is gonna be great."Ā
He turned and looked up the street to where a Super Duper Burger sat calling out to him. āHey you okay with burgers?ā He couldnāt remember that last time heād actually sat down with anyone to eat. Michael was a little embarrassed at how excited the prospect made him. He didnāt even know this guy. He figured if he was a jerk he would have just let him walk out in the street though.Ā
He laughed at Cheyenneās statement. āShit, yeah. I guess a creep would be the type to say āhey donāt worry, Iām not a creep.ā Iāll just have to prove it then. Come on. Now that Iām thinking about food, Iām starving.ā
His bottom lip dropped briefly, he thought he ought to say something about the stranger's desk job but the words weren't coming to him. Cheyenne didn't want the guy to have to eat alone, again, it didn't seem right.
"Yeah, I'll eat a burger." Cheyenne would probably eat anything if it was said to be food and put in front of him. Being picky would not have suited him well as he was growing up. He would have starved to death.
Cheyenne smirked as Michael spoke, "Okay. Guess I've gotta see for myself." He slipped his phone into his back pocket and followed behind the blond. "Yeah, hey, I'm really hungry too, now that you mention it."
"Is there anything youād like to suggest? Something along the lines of orange chicken and egg fried rice with extra vegetables? I didnāt think becoming a good Catholic meant I had to be removed from my favorite foods."
"Is it too late to change your mind? Like 'oh no sorry I didn't mean Chinese food. I meant carrots'? Maybe you could get away with going to a buffet. They advertise a certain kind of food but most of the time it's just a smorgasbord of inauthentic food but it's so frickin' delicious."
"Seriously man after everything, that would have been a monumentally stupid way to die." He felt himself shaking a little, a delayed reaction to the dump of adrenaline. Ā "I gotta stop trying to do ten things at once. Hey, umm hi, Iām Michael the idiot you just kept from getting pasted by a cab." He ditched his phone and stuck out his hand. "Is there any way I can say thank you? Can I get you lunch or something. I mean this was actually supposed to be my lunch break anyway." He knew he was rambling a bit as the lunch break crowds moved around them to cross the street as the light had now actually turned green. "Iām not a creep or anything. I promise."
Cheyenne bit his lip as he tried to stop himself from grinning. "Yeah, of course. Stupid way to die. Worse than like slippin' on water. Now we can walk away with cool stories. I wouldn't want to see you get hit by a car. That'd be an awful thing to live with. I'm glad you're alright. So fuckin' glad."Ā
He took Michael's hand into his own and gave it a shake. It was oddly formal. Cheyenne was used to casual introductions. "I'm Cheyenne."
His ears perked up at Michael's offer. He didn't want to take advantage of the guy but it wasn't easy to pass up a free lunch, especially when you couldn't remember the last time you ate. "Um, wow, yeah? I mean if it's not too much trouble. It'd be kind of killer actually. I'm cheap."Ā
A chuckle reached his throat at the last comment, "Wow, man, that's not suspicious at all." He teased a bit before letting go of Michael's hand.
With his cell phone in one hand, Mr. Pruceās dry cleaning in the other, and his mind trying to remember the number to the IT customer service department of Logitech, Michael wasnāt really paying attention to where he was going. Just as his foot went over the curb there was a hand pulling back and out of the way of an angry honking taxi cab.
"Wow, oh man. That was close. Thanks. Thanks. I think maybe you just saved my life."
Cheyenne had just happened to look up from is phone when he saw another guy stepping off the curb. A bright yellow taxi was whirling his way and Cheyenne couldn't hold back from instinctively grabbing the blond stranger. There was no time for words, only actions.
"Holy shit." He covered his mouth out of shock as he listened to the other man's gratitude. "No problem, dude." His heart was pounding against his chest but he couldn't imagine how it must have felt to almost get hit by a car. Cheyenne was clumsy but never to the extent of near death.
"Yup, I am, been one for three years now. Most of the time, I enjoy what I do, but sometimes⦠There are just some people who really donāt know how to behave. Drunk adults and bratty kids? I can kind of see the similarities, but then again, Iāve never really had to deal with drunk adults⦠Iām assuming that youāre a bartender, then?āĀ
"Oh, that's cool. It's like they left their manners at home, right? Unfortunately there's not much you can do. I try to keep a smile on my face because I don't want to lose out on getting a tip. I wouldn't recommend it. Kind of sucks, actually. No, not really. Just a waiter, kind of like you, but I work at a club. It's not a permanent thing, I hope, but it gets some bills paid and stuff. And, hey, I'm Cheyenne. Have I told you that yet? I don't think I got your name either."
"So, I gave up Chinese for lent, but itās actually killing meā¦"
"I'm sure you can find something else to eat?"
