i was only slightly joking when i said it was the end of an era. for 2021, i am revamping my studyblr since i am finally starting university. so, this is my (re)introduction to the studyblr community!

about me

my name is yesenia and i use she/her pronouns

i am a first generation student, meaning no one in my family has gone to university before me

i am queer and poc (mexican but born and raised in america)

i am majoring in mathematics and planning to minor in teaching

i know three languages: english, spanish and french (all of varying fluency)

I've been enjoying some cool weather while the seasons change!

Adjusting to a new city and new department at the same time has me feeling very disoriented. On the bright side, I really do feel like going to graduate school was the right decision for me, and I really think I'll do well once I get settled. It'll just take a few months... or years, haha.

Below the cut is a beautiful poem, "i love you more than the law will let me" by Jacqui Germain. I highly recommend the read.

I've somehow managed to get myself really busy this week, so I'm trying to use the little times in between to do something language learning related, even if its just for 15-20mins. I continued with the finnish2go podcast, working over the transcript (i'm trying not to show much of it since its paid content but :'D) Also read a couple pages of Little Women!

Today in the morning I went to a job fair with a girl I met last week, and even tho I knew the companies were not much of my area and honestly haven't prepared for it, we attended an interesting workshop and got out cv photo taken, so it was worth it. Also met with another friend in the afternoon for a walk. As you can see in the pic, fall is coming!! I love the colors but it's starting to be actually cold 🤧

Also lets ignore yesterday's post had today's date, i wrote it already past midnight and I just realized lmao

it's an accessibility tool i made for myself because i needed it, which basically lets you focus on one sentence at a time as you read large blocks of texts (books, articles, etc.). it offers different highlight styles, some of which use gradients to help guide your eyes from the start of the sentence until the end. you can move forward and back pressing the buttons or using ALT + left and right arrow keys if you use it and you find it helpful please tell me about it so i can have the motivation to keep improving it. i love knowing people use my tools

Do people know about Vocational Rehab? If you're USAmerican they have this in every state.

It's a program that helps disabled folks access education, training, and employment. For FREE.

You only have to be disabled to qualify (autism, ADHD, mental illness, physical illness, etc) and they cover very broad categories of disability. You do NOT have to be officially diagnosed yet when you walk in - they will even help pay for your diagnosis if you are struggling w disability.

I applied with my suspected autism and fibromyalgia, and they paid for 100% of my formal autism assessment.

Once your disability is established they will give you career counseling to learn about your interests and skills, and depending on the plan you create with your caseworker they will then help with school or finding employment. They paid for 100% of my college tuition and books, and even provided a laptop for me to use.

You do not have to pay anything for this program. If you make above a certain income, you will have to contribute to educational costs but will still receive assistance.

They will also help with the cost of things like mental health counseling while you work towards your goals, clothing for interviews, etc.

They cannot discriminate based on your race, gender, or sexual orientation.

They won't make you do excessive meetings.

They will allow you to do meetings with your caseworker remotely.

They will not drug test you.

They want you to succeed.

I'm sure that individual experiences vary but my caseworker was exceptionally easy to work with and very kind.

Vocational Rehab is a phenomenal resource every disabled person should be aware of. Here is the list of offices in every state:

Govt. Shutdown PSA

During the shutdown if you visit any National Public lands (parks, forests etc) PLEASE take everything you brought in with you. This is a most important time to "leave no trace." Any trash you have bring it home with you. Don't even leave it in the bins if you can avoid it.

Those trash bins aren't emptied by your local public works sanitation department. They're emptied by the National Parks/Forest workers. And if they're furloughed right now then that job isn't being done.

Please help keep our public lands as clean as possible - well always - but especially during this time of shutdown.

And please TELL OTHERS.
