A man named Klaus Martens was a military doctor during the tragic times of World War II, in Wehrmacht, Germany. The Legend says that when the conflict ended in 1945, he was involved in an accident skiing in the mountains of the Bavarian Alps, and his ankle was injured. While in recovery, he realized that his army boots have not protected him well since the incident, and were very uncomfortable to the injured foot.
During the long and tedious days of rest and meditation, he occupied his sad thoughts into something useful, improving the army boots. Then, he manufactured them in soft leather, and air cushioned soles. The doctor tried to make a living selling the improved boots with no luck.
Germany still smoldering rubble of Allied bombing, when Dr Martens was walking on the streets of Munich in 1947 and found an old fellow student, another doctor, Herbert Funck.
Together they tried to rebuild their lives with new dreams, and became partners in the
footwear business. They undertake this task by stirring destroyed materials in dreaded Luftwaffe Airfields, finding the desired material, rubber debris.
The partners put on sale with great effort and scarce resources a small number of the new footwear.
Apparently by chance, a British shoe manufacturer, R. Griggs Group Ltd., contacted them and bought the patent rights to manufacture the boots in British establishments.
From there on, the legend ends and the rest is history: the brand succeeded worldwide.
