Warning: sappy post ahead. It was right here in this building, 4 years ago, that I was bitten by the zine bug. I found out about San Francisco Zine Fest 2014 just a day or two before it happened and decided to throw a zine together last minute and just go. I’d never made one, and I called it You Are Not Special. I thought I would just give it to whoever seemed cool, and had no idea zine trading was such a thing. Well, I made some new friends that day & came home with a handful of new zines feeling very inspired. It was over 2 years of non-stop zine making later that I finally felt like I had a strong body of work and tabled at my first zine fest, EBABZ 2016. I stayed up most of the night before, was nervous as hell because I wanted everything to be perfect and made myself sick as a result, probably from stress, lack of sleep and being in a large crowd with lots of germs. But the more zine fests I did the easier it got and the more fun I was able to have. My favorites so far were Tijuana last summer and San Jose back in April. I didn’t sell a whole lot today (actually sales-wise, today was my worst zine fest ever) but I don’t do this to make money, my zines aren’t the types to ever make money, and I love them. I love the welcoming atmosphere of zine fests free from the gatekeeper mentality that kept me for so long from pursuing things I wanted to pursue. I love meeting internet friends in person. I love free bananas and dogs sleeping under tables. I love trading and giving freebies to people just because I like them. I love DMing people I meet at zine fests months later for art advice/tips and not feeling weird about it. I love zines and I love SFZF. Thank you SFZF, you changed my life, and I’m a better person because of you. SFZF forever! It’s finally happening, guys: Chicken Milkshake Zines is now taking submissions for Lonerchicks zine volume 2! Lonerchicks is a zine for, by and about women who travel alone. Submit your travel writing, art, photography and anything that falls vaguely into those three categories to: [email protected] by Sept. 5th, 2018. One of my earliest zines, the idea was to get drunk and make an abstract doodle in 10 minutes or less and use said doodles to illustrate a short poem I wrote. It’s not the happiest zine but making it was lots of fun.
