@chickens-at-the-point
Summer time is busy time at the Point. Dug up our potatoes today. Not a ton of them, but not bad for my first attempt with potatoes. Next year I'll be better prepared. 47 or so potatoes. Yum! 😋 Not pictured - all the sugar snap peas because the kids ate every last one on the walk back to the house. 🤦♀️
So funny story. And by funny I mean strange and a bit gross.
I started tilling up the garden and expanding it further than it has been in years. It probably hasn't been this big since my FIL lived here as a kid. Anyway, the tiller started acting up and my husband tells me to stop it, I had a big root or clump of dirt stuck in there.
He starts trying to unwedge the root and jumps back saying "uh, that isn't a root. Get the kids away from here."
Y'all, it was a fucking mummified cat. I thought he was kidding so I checked and yup. God knows how long it had been there.
So now we're wondering if someone in the family really had it out for this cat or it just met an unfortunate end.
Apparently Snickers thinking this egg laying thing is a game 🤷♀️
Fairy eggs are always a cute surprise, but not when you're trying to collect fertile eggs for hatching!
The egg at the bottom is her normal egg size. That tiny thing to the left is the egg she gave me. 🤦♀️

I realized that the size is hard to judge because it's next to other eggs, which can vary. To give you a better idea of just how tiny this egg is, here it is next to a quarter... It’s the same size 🤣

First snow
Roughly 15 days until the next batch of babies hatch, and it occurs to me that I'm going to need an actual coop for them. They would fit in the big coop, but my bigger chickens are not exactly nice to the bantams. The current bantam coop won't fit everyone so it's time to build another!
My husband usually gets these jobs, but he's already busy installing cabinets in the kitchen so I'm going to attempt it myself.
I'm working on the frame. So far I have built the front and back wall. Time to run to the store for more wood so I can get started on the bottom and sides. Thank goodness the price has come down a little.
Hatched out 7 of the most adorable cochin babies and sent them off to their new home. So sad to see them go, but they are going to be loved for sure. Next batch of eggs are in the incubator, and I'm planning on keeping some for us 😃
Picture of freshly hatched baby for tax.
Oh my goodness hurry up I want to meet you 😭😭😭
It's that time again! The first egg just pipped.
That means even though I KNOW it can take a while day for the chick to hatch, I will now begin obsessively stalking the poor thing and worrying that something is wrong.
Every hatch, no matter what. I should know better, but nah. Hatching is the most exciting thing.
So what if Christmas is in 2 days...I have babies hatching!!!
I have been Blessed™️

Counting down to hatch day!
10 bantam cochin eggs. There were 11, but we had an early quitter. Hatch day is Christmas, assuming they don't show early. I have heard that's common with bantams.
Stopped baking cookies long enough to go outside and gather eggs... and it seems like one of our young pullets finally started laying! What a weird time to start 😂 and such a tiny egg!

We aren't getting as many eggs as we did in the summer, but I'm not complaining. I wasn't expecting any this late in the year!
Bony🌺
2 days ago I went to check on the chickens and was heartbroken to find that our 2 three week old chicks had managed to squeeze out of the run away from mama and the protection of the flock. One was completely gone, and the other had been injured by whatever attacked them.
Baby had a puncture wound on her back and was not walking but was cheeping loudly. I took her inside to clean her up and put something on her wound, hoping she would perk up and walk. I was really hoping it was just shock.
It's been two days now and she still can't walk or get around. She can't get to her food and water without help, but she'll flap her wings like anything. Baby is very vocal and lively, just... can't use her legs. We are still hopeful that she will heal as it doesn't seem that anything is broken.
We are spending the day at my father in law's house, but I couldn't leave her at home with no way to even feed herself, so she is coming with!
Here's hoping she walks again one day.
