Ah- yeah. Ikebukuro… She was afraid to admit it, but in their time together, that place had begun to feel like a distant memory… She hated that. She would very much love to see Shinra again… But also, to see Shizuo, to see Anri, to see Simon… It’d be nice.

Celty could only nod along to his words for now, afraid to admit her feelings too loudly to herself for now. She did not miss the pause Yamato let fall mid-sentence, but chose not to comment on that for now, either. It was honesty that Yamato wanted, but Celty had found that she should still deliver it with some subtlety.

“Well, at the very least, I’m going to try..! I’m not sure how, or if we even can, but as long as there’s the possibility…”

Somehow, even without her powers, she felt less… Dead. She didn’t know if she was or not, but for now… She liked to believe that she was  fine, how true or untrue it might be.

“… But I must admit, I am unsure how long it would take, though I would believe quite a while. If we keep at it, however…

Uhm, but, Yamato-kun, that aside… You have never mentioned these acquantainces to me before, let alone by name. Is this Hibiki one of them? Because, you said it’d be fine if you get to see them again, so it sounds like you get along.”

Frankly, Yamato getting along with anyone else was a refreshing concept to Celty. She should try to encourage him in that as well, somehow.

A mild look of bewilderment appeared on Yamato’s face as he read the text Sturluson had typed up for him on her PDA. 

“Have I not mentioned him at all?” That was strange, especially considering how often Hibiki was on his mind. Of course Yamato mostly kept to himself, but even so it was odd he hadn’t mentioned Hibiki to Sturluson even once. he better change that. “I can tell you about him if you wish to know about him.”

Pushing any concerning thoughts on why he had failed to mention Hibiki from his mind, Yamato thought of a way to explain the intricate relationship they had. The fond memories he had of him were bittersweet now that they had been separated. 

“Hibiki made me realize that the potential to become someone strong and extraordinary can be present in otherwise ordinary people. Before the alien invaders known as the Septentriones came to eradicate humanity and Earth with it, he was just a normal young adult. During that ordeal he grew into a leader and I came to call him... my sworn friend.”

What the fuck is a trench coat?

No, seriously, she’d never heard that term for a coat like this before. She’d figured it’d be more along the line of a robe-coat or something like that, but a ‘trench coat’..? Nah, she had no idea what that was. Still, it was an answer to the question ‘what the hell you wearing’, so fair enough!

“I sure as hell ain’t ever heard that one before, but deal’s a deal. Anyways,” she grabbed the back of his coat once more from her kneeling position, wiggling it as she did so, “not all of us have lounge jobs like you, my aristocratic grumpy buddy! So let a poor lil street urchin help you out and demonstrate what I mean!

Now, if you start walking, surely you’ll completely understand the problem I’m talking about!”

This short interaction had given Mila plenty of information on what kind of person this human was. He was grumpy and super un-fun, which by extension made him incredibly fun to harass. Not only that, he was either rich-born, a pretentious politician, or a mage.

She hoped the latter, because it would be infinitely more interesting than the previous two options. She’d probe into that next, whether this guy liked it or not. He may have long legs and a bigger stride, but Mila had determination and a horrible personality, so she’d manage.

“Lounge jobs?” Yamato repeated, staring daggers at the elf who continued to harass him. 

He hadn’t sacrificed seventeen years of his life defending Japan and by extension the world from demons and alien invaders just to have his sacrifice be called a lounge job. Then again, there had not been a single time he had been thanked for his service so this kind of ungrateful behavior wasn’t new to him. 

“...You are wrong to assume that. Now let my trench coat go and nobody needs to get hurt.” The Demon Summoning App might have stopped functioning, but that didn’t mean Yamato could no longer put up a fight. As someone who valued power above anything else, his magic skills and strength were unmatched. “You would best not underestimate me.”

Ah… It was clear, that in the time that Celty had not seen Yamato, he absolutely… Hadn’t changed. The weird, maybe somewhat scary smile he gave her told her as much. Even so, Celty liked to think that she knew him well enough to at least be able to tell that this meant he was trying his best at being pleasant to interact with. Or, at least, something in that direction. Point was, he was probably trying his best, so she should encourage him on that, later. She took out her PDA from her biker suit, motions a lot less frantic now than they were before. She had caught his attention, so that meant all should be fine.

“That, we do.”

She didn’t feel the need to hold up the screen all too long; Yamato was a fast reader in her book, and was familiar with this form of communication by now. That is, if he had figured out they couldn’t talk telepathically anymore..?

“It is good to see you, but also not good, since it means you also must’ve woken up here suddenly, right..? But this place, it seems less troublesome than the previous one, I think. So maybe there’s actually the option of leaving..?”

The hint of a smile on Yamato’s face faltered as Sturluson began “speaking” of this new city they had found themselves in. Crossing his arms, he shared with her what was on his mind.

“I had hoped that we would meet again at Ikebukuro where you would have been reunited with your fiance and I with my...” There was a pause as Yamato tried to come up with the right word to describe Hibiki and the others. “...acquaintances, but it seems we must wander aimlessly through the streets of yet another strange and unfamiliar city.” 

Back in Amaranth Sturluson had convinced Yamato to look for his own purpose in life (or death, rather) now that he was no longer bound to the duty of the Hotsuin family, but his sudden arrival at Stella City had left him no time to think about what it was he wanted to do. 

“Will you be searching for a way out of this city? If so, allow me to join you. Having to take up the Hotsuin duty again would be quite the burden on me, but if it means I would get to see Hibiki again then so be it.”

Nope… This wasn’t any important information either.

Shinjuurou waved another piece of film around as he held it up. With his back leaned against Berry Bulletin, he figured he should further investigate the items he found on his body when he had woken up. Maybe if he tried viewing the strips in different types of light, he would be able to find something valuable, but.. it proved not to work that way. He let out a sigh as he rubbed his hand through his hair.

His focus was, however, quickly shifted when he noticed someone familiar pass by. Shinjuurou’s jaw dropped in disbelief, but considering they were right outside the City Council, where presumably Aries and Stella were active; he wasn’t too surprised. Thus he quickly followed, making sure to not lose sight of him.

“Hotsuin-san.“

Adaptability was a skill Yamato had perfected over the years. To not just be in command of a mission to destroy an alien invader, but also be on the front line to carry it out required an incredible amount of leadership and flexibility. 

Adapt or perish, now as ever, is nature's inexorable imperative. 

These words by H.G. Wells were especially true to Yamato. Would he not have lived by them for all his life, he would no longer have a life to live anything by. 

Even here in this strange and unfamiliar city Wells’ words held true. Being fully aware the first step to getting control over the situation was to gather information, Yamato hadn’t hesitated to grasp onto his first lead. 

He had been on his way to the City Council to demand a word with Aries and Stella when a familiair voice had called out his name. There were few people Yamato would willingly sacrifice his valuable time for, but this voice just happened to belong to a person whose presence he didn’t terribly mind.

“Detective,” Yamato greeted Shinjuurou, a hint of playfulness in his voice. “You look well... albeit lost. Is that film?”

Mila made a little twirl in motion of the coat being pulled from underneath her boot. What a grumpy fella! Well, not much to do about that, and she sure wasn’t gonna let it ruin her day! Nuh-uh! Because, after all, sir over here hadn’t answered her question the way she’d wanted, so he wasn’t going to leave anytime soon until he had, that was for sure.

“Hey there, Sourpuss! That’s a snarl over there that’ll make any girl cry when laying eyes upon you!”

“Anyways sir-ee, you damn well aware that that sure as hell wasn’t the answer I was looking for, now is it! So here I’ll go, let me reiterate that little thing again so this time you can hear. Get that stuffing outta those ears now,”

She made another twirl in the opposite direction, after which she crouched down on one knee, gesturing with both her arms at the others coat.

“The hell this thing you wearin’?! I ain’t ever seen this fucking thing before. It’s so long! It’s so dangly! Everything’s so long and dangly; you’re long and dangly! It makes no sense to wear! You’ll just trip and fall and get murdered and die.”

Yamato scoffed at the attempt to get under his skin. His faith in humanity which had been restored because of Hibiki’s hard work was still in tact, if only because the person in his way didn’t seem entirely human.

Her features told him she had to be at least part elf. Her blond hair made him think of Titania, but her attire as well as her attitude confirmed that she wasn’t the fairy queen in question. He supposed he could humor her for a bit, at least until he had decided if she was dangerous and should be disposed of.  

“This would be a trench coat. I have yet to experience the hardships you describe. I find this attire to be quite comfortable.” Yamato had tripped over his coat when he had been younger and just been made the chief of JP’s, but she didn’t need to know that. “Fulfilling my duty would be unpleasant if my clothes had the same stench as yours, I imagine.”

For someone waking up in an indescribably weird place, Mila was taking all this surprisingly well. To be fair, the Folfex elves weren’t native to the world Mila was born in in the first place, but rather arrived there through some magic mumbo-jumbo incident. Not that it had much to do with Mila; she was born from an elf and human, after all, and very much in the world that Folfex didn’t actually come from. What did she care about her elven home? Not a whole lot, actually, but it made appearing unannounced in different places in, what Mila assumed, different worlds, was not something that she deemed out of the ordinary.

Oh man, if only grandma knew, she’d so be on this shit. But she wasn’t here, and Mila was, and frankly? Time to make the best of this fucking situation.

She only half read the letter she’d received from the sheep before she was out the door and on the streets, checking out every little thing she deemed interesting; which was a lot, ranging from the sheep to the people to the rocks and the trees. She found several things were much like she was used to at home, so she had no doubts about being able to get used to this place.

What most caught Mila’s attention though was everyone’s peculiar fashion. Here she was, walking around in full armour and travelling boots, and everyone else had such different types of clothing! It was very intriguing. 

Most intriguing, however, was this one specific guy’s clothing, because it was so suuuuuper dreary! It’s all black! You’ve got all these people in neat purples and blues and reds and greens and happy yellows, and this fellow walking around in only black, with a coat way too long and a super long string hanging from whatever his type of shirt was. And so many things, just hanging from there- it was just too unpractical!

She raised her foot as he walked by, and stepped down on his coat.

“Hey, gloomy McSmugface! The hell this thing you wearin’?” A dress shirt? A tie? A long-ass coat? Never heard of those before!

Shortly after arriving at Stella City, Yamato had already come across something troubling. The functions of his cellphone seemed to have been limited. His calls to Sako and his other JP’s subordinates weren’t coming through and trying to start the Demon Summoning App had resulted in the program crashing. 

After getting the same error message seventeen times, Yamato had decided to start looking for a solution elsewhere. His first stop was going to be the City Counsel. There he should be able to find this Aries and Stella which had been mentioned in the letter which he had received upon his arrival. He, however, couldn’t have thought he would cross paths with the biggest trickster in the city on his way there. 

“Watch your step, vixen,” Yamato snarled, grabbing his coat by the hem and swiftly pulling it from under the stranger’s feet. “This is my work attire, what of it?”

If there was something Celty had learned from… Previous happenings, it was that collecting information about your situation was done best in locations where people could go about their daily business, preferably in a relaxed manner. People were much more willing to talk then, both to her and to eachother, so it made it easier to find any answers to questions she had.

Presumably, this Stella City had a place called Starlight Garden, which sounded to Celty like such a place as she was looking for. At the very least, it couldn’t hurt to check it out, right? Any information was better than none; and even if she could get none, it couldn’t make this situation even worse than it already was.

So off she’d gone, in search of Starlight Garden. It had taken her a while, but eventually she found herself at the place she’d been looking for, sitting on a bench and carefully watching people pass by, trying to listen in to their conversations without truly eavesdropping on things she shouldn’t hear. She just wanted to know about the city; she didn’t feel like breaking people’s privacy.

It was when she saw a glance of familiar silver hair that she was shaken from her quiet listening, jumping up from the bench she sat on and pointing at him.

“A-ah! Yamato-kun?! So, then- he’s here too?!”

She did her best to wave him over, as he had seemed not to react to her thinking out loud. Was that another thing related to this place? After all, she was unable to use her shadows properly, too…

Few people had the ability to stand out as much as Yamato did at any given time or location. He was like a black and white rip in dimensional time and space in the otherwise colorful place that was Starlight Garden. Would anymore of his overwhelming presence seep into the roots of Stella City, the flowers surrounding him were sure to wither. 

Anyone who would have the pleasure(?) of laying their eyes on him would only have one question on their mind: why was he here? Yamato was wondering the same thing himself. Having woken up in a strange city, he had gone outside and headed for the nearest garden in the area. Surely there was something that could be of use to him there. 

What, or rather who, Yamato found in Starlight Garden came as a pleasant surprise to him. Approaching the dullahan who was so desperately trying to catch his attention, he gave her the closest thing to a smile he could muster. 

“Ah, Sturluson-san. We meet again.”

Yamato had not been feeling like himself since arriving at Amaranth. With each new day came the horrific realization there would always come another. For how many months had he been mourning the loss of his own life now? Death had taken everything from him. In return he had received an eternity he hadn’t asked for. 

One could say he was going through an identity crises at the moment. Unsurprising, really. Even the best of the best (which Yamato considered himself to be) would have a hard time overcoming this. 

And yet, Yamato was an opportunist. His identity crises aside, he had learnt many things about this place. While he had yet to discover the reason for being here, he was satisfied knowing what he knew for the time being. Perhaps it was finally time to start researching other things. Perhaps it was finally time to learn about himself.

From Yamato’s understanding the best way to get to know yourself would be to determine how you are different from others. This approach, however, required a skill he did not posses: socializing. Which brought him here, unknowingly scaring people away with his strong gaze in Star Gardens. 

He had come here out in the open to meet with commoners, but not a single one had sought any socialization with him for the past two hours! Before his death he couldn’t have cared less about being ignored, but now in his death he kind of did. Although he hated the thought of it, he realized nobody was going to converse with him at this rate. There was only one thing left to try... Seeking out interaction himself.

“Hey, you,” Yamato halted a random stranger. The stranger in question turned to him, curiosity written on his face as clear as day. Now that Yamato had his attention he had to go for the kill and show this boy he was serous about having a conversation with him. 

Yamato started the conversation in the only way he knew: speaking the very first thing to come to mind. Unfortunately for everyone involved, the first thing to come to Yamato’s mind was far from an acceptable conversation starter. 

“How did you die? Tell me in detail.”

Papers fluttered to the floor as Yamato suddenly awakened from his slumber. Disoriented, he took in his surrounding as he wiped drool from his face with the back of his hand. He was sitting behind his desk, high piles of research papers surrounding him. Holding back a yawn, he lazily reached for one of the papers and skimmed over his notes. He gently placed the piece of paper back down before pushing that pile of paperwork to the floor as well.

A month’s worth of research and he had nothing to show for it. No new points of interest. No breakthroughs. Just irritation and hours of his precious eternal time wasted. He had hated every minute of it. 

At this point he wasn’t even sure what he was trying to prove. Perhaps he was looking for an excuse as to why he had turned even more bitter since arriving at Amaranth. There certainly had been some changes to him personalitywise, but he wouldn’t dare say if they were for better or for worse. 

It were the sounds of someone knocking hard on his front door which pulled him out of his thoughts. His first few steps were a bit wobbly as he went to answer them. On his way the person at his door knocked again. 

“Yes, yes. Patience,” Yamato mumbled, more so to himself than anyone else. Once he finally opened the door he was greeted by a familiair “face”. “Ah, Sturluson-san. Good...” --Yamato looked up as he tried recalling the time he did not know-- “...day. What brings you here?”

Mutual respect? Ugh. That wasn’t something Shinjuurou really felt like shooting for. To be honest, interaction with people in general was very tiring, especially if they were someone like Jae-ha. The detective pondered about it when he was in the bathroom and decided to wash his face.

Perhaps Yamato was right. Maybe he should work on relationships with people. He might have had lost faith in Earth’s humanity, but who was to say Amaranth wasn’t better? Perhaps he could actually build solid bonds in this world. What if he could make friends?

Upon that thought, Shinjuurou exited the bathroom and had a short chat with a waitress behind the register. She was smiling, stroking her hair behind his ear and flirting a little. It was probably a service she gave every customer, yet Shinjuurou felt mildly uncomfortable with it. Nice people in general did that to him. He tried to smile back and returned to Yamato soon.

“Time to leave.” Shinjuurou told him as he dug into his pocket and took out a cigarette. He was rather quick to put it in his mouth.

“Don’t worry, I paid for us already.” He followed up and took his own crème brûlée in his hand, digging into it with a small spoon. “A client just called me to meet them, so I’d prefer to leave soon.”

And then he casually walked towards the door, as if everything was fine and nothing was off. Nothing at all.

“Tell me more about this training a dragon thing on the way, though?”

Shinjuurou was a lucky man. Because Yamato’s back had been facing him while he had been talking to the waitress behind the register Yamato couldn’t catch Shinjuurou in his lie. Or rather, Yamato suspected something was off, but he had no way to prove it. 

If trusting Shinjuurou on his word turn out to be a mistake only time would tell. While it might not be a wise decision, Yamato didn’t raise an objection as followed Shinjuurou out. Yamato made a mental note to himself to make  Shinjuurou come with his to this place a second time just to see if he had actually paid for them both. If he hadn’t, Yamato would know soon enough. The reactions of the staff of this restaurant by seeing their faces would speak for themselves.

The talk of training dragons momentarily forgotten, Yamato raised a question on what he thought to be more interesting. 

“Might I join you? I would like to know what your client has to say and work with you on this case if there turns out to be one. Although I wasn’t a detective before coming to Amaranth, I think I could be of service to you.”

“I have my ways of making a person talk.”

ethoxyethane requested Hotsuin twins, with the prompt of rivalry.

I apologize if this contradicts what Miyako Hotsuin is supposed to be like, given she doesn’t appear in the game or at all, I have no idea what she’s supposed to be like besides Yamato except with a female body.

There was also the fact Yamato didn’t want to hurt Shinjuurou, but of course anything hinting at Yamato having feeling was better left unsaid.
