2016 in a nutshell
I canāt believe Iām reblogging this three months later with entirely new context
Hi everyone! This is an illustrated guide I made as part of my co-admining work at The Middle Eastern Feminist on Facebook! It will be published there shortly.Ā The technique that is displayed here is a genuine one used in psychology - I forgot the name and couldnāt find it again so if you know about it, feel free to tell me! Some could say: āYes but you can use that technique for instances of harassment other than Islamophobic attacks!ā, and my reply is: Sure! Please do so, it also works for other ātypesā of harassment of a lone person in a public space!! However Iām focusing on protecting Muslims here, as they have been very specific targets lately, and as a French Middle Eastern woman, I wanted to try and do something to raise awareness on how to help when such things happen before our eyes - that way one cannot say they ādidnāt know what to doā!Ā Iād like to insist on two things: 1) Do not, in any way, interact with the attacker. You must absolutely ignore them and focus entirely on the person being attacked! 2) Please make sure to always respect the wishes of the person youāre helping: whether they want you to leave quickly afterwards, or not! If youāre in a hurry escort them to a place where someone else can take over - call one of their friends, or one of yours, of if they want to, the police. It all depends on how they feel! For my fellow French-speakers: I will translate it in French and post it on my page as soon as I can :) Please donāt hesitate to share this guide as it could push a lot of people to overcome bystander syndrome!! Lots of love and stay safe! PS: I you repost this cartoon of mine on twitter or instagram, please add me in the post so I can see it, with @itsmaeril :)
This is one of those things that will get funnier the older it gets.

Iām not into politics. I donāt LIKE talking about politics because to discuss politics I feel like I have to give up some of my humanity.
but I wanna address the attitude of people dismissing the genuine fear that people have regarding the cheddar cheese man winning the election.
First of all, the people who are neutral or excited about the apocalyptic presidency cheering for change is undoubtedly in the position where they are not touched by these changes. People who respond positively or neutrally about about the election results watch the world burn like itās Saturday cartoon because they donāt live in it. But for those who do live the nightmares they are allowed to be fearful and stressed over the outcome of the future, or one they might not have. You do not have the jurisdiction to justify or dismiss peopleās reaction whose bridges are hung over fire while you float on cloud nine.
Secondly, while the orange man may not be able to unleash his apocalyptic plans over america, people are allowed to mourn over what his win means to the country. He is a monument of Americaās sleeping giant that is the white supremacy and bigoted mindset that half of American voters rectified. The fact that he won is just a shadow cast onto the marginalized groups of America reminding them that racism, sexism, etc is alive and well. The people of America are allowed to mourn not because of him specifically, but what he represents. Dismissal of this fear saying āhe wonāt even be able to do anything,ā is irrelevant because he has already done something and that is reigniting the bigotry that is within the American people.
Lastly, people are allowed to cut ties with āpeople with differing opinionsā if those opinions boil down to stripping others of basic rights as a human being. At this point, āopinionā is a vanilla description of what could easily be malicious intents. Why would anyone criticize others for cutting contact with those who deny them of basic human rights?
Arguments like ānow is not the time to be dividedā in an attempt to bring non-Trumpkin supporters closer to their counterparts should not even exist considering Americaās always been divided. How do you think pumpkin man won the election?
Without guilt-tripping, people are allowed to react negatively to this electionās outcome. The people who like to watch the world burn are those who do not live in it.
With that being said, people with superiority complex in ārationalizingā the situation to being ānot as bad as it is,ā not in comfort of others but to invalidate their reaction, are not as ārationalā as they seem. Not āintellectualā enough to see outside the scopes of their floating island of safety and thus can be dismissed altogether.
TL;DR: people care about things that affect them. Stay in your damn lane and let people react to shit that matters to them before you break that fucking glass slipper of white ego that you stand on.

āMy Hijab Has Nothing To Do With Oppression. Itās A Feminist Statementā
Not all Muslim women cover their bodies. Not all Muslim women who do are forced to do so. Like freelance writer Hanna Yusuf, who chooses to wear a hijab in a daily act of feminism. In a new video for The Guardian, Yusuf challenges stereotypes by setting out to reclaim the choice to wear a hijab as āa feminist statement.ā
For more on on how the hijab helps women reclaim their bodies watch the full video here.

I am not Muslim but I am so glad to see this because honestly I had never ever thought about it this way, I feel like Iāve been so ignorant, my eyes and mind have been opened
