into the spider-verse has some of the most dynamic, fluid, colorful, beautiful, and expressive animation i’ve seen in years
dreamworks and disney and etc etc have all been fighting each other to see who can animate the most eyelashes and make fabric swish right in the wind
animation has just become a contest to see who can mimic real life (which kind of defeats the purpose lol)

The writers making toothless act like a dog is so uncomfortable to watch. It doesn’t trigger my trauma I just don’t care about dogs at all. I don’t find them cute. I miss cat toothless
I do too. I always feel some regret about Dean’s move to make Toothless more dog-like in HTTYD 2. I understand Dean likes dogs, so I see why he did it from his interests and biases. Unfortunately, for me it took away the Toothless I fell in love with. I can’t connect to the dog-like Toothless mannerisms. I say it would’ve been better to stick with the character mannerisms they made for Toothless in first film… for consistency of personality if nothing else (and there’s something to said the audience did fall in love with Toothless as he was in HTTYD 2010!). Making Toothless more dog-like in the second film retroactively takes away my joy of Toothless in HTTYD and GOTNF, too. Beyond my own non-dog personality, it’s also a trope I feel has been overdone, maybe to the point of a gimmick in many animated features: an oft-used, somewhat uninspiring maneuver to turn any random animal into a dog to make it endearing for audiences.
Toothless was initially animated with inspiration from cats, dogs, and horses, but with a heavy emphasis on cats because of his key animator. And that type of body language in Toothless did change with HTTYD 2, where you see in the script Toothless’ actions being described like a dog’s several times. We can make in-universe explanations for Toothless’ personality growth, and I have made my own in-universe explanations for it… but I still acknowledge the meta reasons for what they are, and they do bother me.
Not to be a negative nancy here. It’s just how I feel emotionally about Toothless. I’ll admit these feelings as truth.

#what’s sad about this is that this is actually what Hawaiians had to do when the western culture took over #a luau was a sacred practice #until the westerners took the concept and had the audacity to change it into a time to stuff your face with food and put on grass skirts and coconut bras and dance the hula #and when they had these events, they didn’t even let actual Hawaiian people in #so to make money to take care of themselves, the Hawaiians were hired to work in these disgraceful events to clean up after the tourists like slaves only to make less than a buck #so good job disney for doing your fucking research and educating these people #sadly, this still goes on even until today and it makes me sick

Let’s not credit just Chris Sanders for this. This happened because they cast actual Hawaiian Actors like Tia Carrere and Jason Scott Lee to play Hawaiian characters, and allowed the actors to have input into writing the characters’ lines.
This sort of authenticity comes from accuracy and authenticity in casting choices. The fact that Chris Sanders as direct/writer facilitated that does not mean he gets credit for the actors’ experience.
This is why diversity and representation in media matters.

the dropped sub-plot was that lilo hated tourists, which is why she goes around taking pictures of them like they were attractions instead of people; like how they took photos of locals
similarly there was a deleted scene where she scares tourists off of a beach by sounding a false tsunami siren to watch them run screaming deeper in the lore that kid thats a prick to her, mertyle, is the daughter of the person who runs the megamart and crushed a lot of other local businesses- when they have to do a hula to tell a story mertyle actually uses it to describe the low prices, where lilo does a hula about a traditional creation myth that was important to her mother. you may notice both lilo and nani are on first name basis with both the coffee shop owner and the fruitseller, there is big disparity between the locals and foreign interest businesses relegating them to just be tourist industry

Do the people getting upset at the new HTTYD movie not realize that toothless’ species is most likely near extinction?
So far toothless is the only one in existence, apparently. You would think dragons that powerful would be causing chaos everywhere, especially given how stealthy they are and how notoriously hard to kill they are (back when they still killed dragons, that is).
The fact that Hiccup’s people haven’t been completely slaughtered gives a good indication that there just arent that many to begin with.
It would make sense for the creators to give him a love interest, not necessarily for the mushy romance aspect, but for the fact that IF HE DOSN’T FUCK HIS SPECIES WILL MOST LIKELY GO EXTINCT FOR GODS SAKE.
Did none of the people complaining about the new lady dragon even consider this fact? The entire movie is most likely gonna be about getting toothless to mate to save his species while hiccup thinks about his own family situation or some shit.
