You can’t see where you’re going, and the apprehension is nearly overwhelming. “Please,” you beg, “just let me look. I’m going to trip and fall.”

Behind you, Loki tuts in disapproval. “I would never allow it,” he says. “Besides, you’ll ruin the surprise.”

“Surprises make me nervous, Loki.”

“Don’t you trust me?”

“Most of the time, yes.” He turns you abruptly, steering you down yet another hallway. You thought you’d developed a pretty decent mental map of the palace of Utgard after all this time, but he’s completely confounded your sense of direction. “Why is it so quiet? You didn’t banish everyone, did you?”

“What an excellent idea, darling. That would be an excellent way to get some peace and quiet, wouldn’t it? Imagine, the entire palace to ourselves…”

“You didn’t answer my question.”

“No,” he replies, and you can hear the laughter in his voice, “I have not banished everyone.”
