The Atacama Desert in Chile is the most arid non-polar region in the world. Evidence suggests it may have received no significant rainfall for a 400 year period from 1570 to 1971, and many weather stations placed there have never seen rain. Scientists believe it may be the oldest desert on earth.

A mummified Chilean woman with tattooed breasts. She died in northern Chile over 3410 years ago. The warm desert air mummified her body, which was buried in a seated position. This allowed body fluids to drain away through gravity. (Source)

After 40 years of dormancy a Chilean volcano sent a huge plume of ash into the sky. Volcano Calbuco, in the country’s south, had laid dormant for more than 40 years when it suddenly erupted in April, causing thousands to flee.
