Near The Lighthouse is a blog of two travel photographers and writers Alex Mazurov and Anastasia Glebova, who spend most of the time exploring northern regions and extreme destinations. In their own words:

Photography and traveling are essential in the life we share. Trying to perceive the world during our trips, we got a strong desire to show it in a way we see – so we started to share our first travel shots. We went further every day, reached more distant places and shot more pictures until one day we realized that not only capturing but also storytelling is what we really enjoy.

There’s an awesome camp where girls train to be firefighters

Firefighting is a profession dominated by men — of the 10,500 in the FDNY, only 52 are women. Camp Fury is hoping to change that. The summer program, started 8 years ago, introduces girls to the skills necessary for becoming a firefighter. This summer it’s being held in Chesapeake, Virginia. Firefighter Mandy George is already seeing results in the girls.

Simone Biles is officially a superstar and a scientific marvel.When Biles pulls off her signature move, her distance from the floor is basically equal to her height. She gets that high up on the strength of her muscles, propelling herself with enough speed and kinetic energy to actually reach that height. And the way she lands literally seems to defy physics.
