Day 9: What are your thoughts on Kurtis Trent? 

Well... think that’s pretty obvious already but... yes, I love him! I think he was the ideal ‘addition’ the series needed and at the time of AoD’s release, having a playable secondary character was refreshing and it’s nice that he was a character we all loved instantly. I know the team at Core had so much about Kurtis they wanted to tell us but, as we know, with the game being cut short it left us with very little but going by the scenes with him, he’s just quintessentially your favourite badass. 

He has a backstory that I find fascinating. He is a vital part of the AoD trilogy - and to this day it still baffles when people just dismiss him as an ‘unnecessary, boring and useless addition’. He was there for something to accomplish for himself to compromise the years he rebelled against his father and the LV, also to avenge his father and the people who worked hard to protect their order as well as their own. He’s silmutaneously very much like Lara but can be the complete opposite. They sort of cancel each other out but there is a pull between them - whether you see that as sexual, romantic or aesthetic, up to you. Either way, there’s something there. And it goes far beyond how they see each other, it’s what they were and why they did what they did. He’s also always seemingly several paces ahead of her and I love that. I also did mention in day 4 that despite his airy confidence, he shows a side of his character that he stays reserved.

I like his no-nonsense attitude, much like Lara, but he’s a typical onion with layers and layers of different personalities, I feel. Or just many secrets. He saved Lara’s ass as well and took the damage (literally. cries.) and usually the ‘hero’ beats the enemies - he couldn’t do hell in the end, it was out of his control but this leads to his abilities and why it’s such a shame the game was forced to cut a load of content. Because that would’ve been interesting to delve further into, both gameplay and story-driven wise. 

AoD was a gripping story alone with Lara’s narrative and to switch over to Kurtis, to get a touch of how why he was there, his purpose or just his thoughts in general. He definitely survived. We were in for so much more Kurtis goodness but -whispers dramatically and forces sobs down- it’ll never happen.
