There is something on your mind that hurts you. It’s not heartbreaking–it will not ruin your day–but it hurts like a splinter. Maybe it’s a mean neighbor’s comment. Maybe it’s a sad news story. Maybe it’s a C when you’d really thought you’d get a B. 

Talk to God about it.

There is something on your mind that makes you smile just a little. It’s not gamechanging–you will not update your status about it–but it makes the moment sweeter. Maybe it’s a perfect cup of coffee. Maybe it’s that really cute cat that hangs around your porch sometimes. Maybe your computer is running better even though you didn’t do anything.

Talk to God about it.

God is our Father. He exists in the sunlit moments when we sing praises. He exists in the storms when we’re drowning. He is the God of our mighty moments. Like any loving father, He wants to hear from us in these times. But He is also the God of our in-betweens. He is the God of the small things that make up a normal day. The God that made orchids also made grass–and where would we be without grass?

The Gift Of Loneliness Loneliness can be a gift. I know how painful it can be to feel alone. But God showed me one day that He has gifts tucked into my times of loneliness. The conversations I have with the Lord in my loneliness always lead me to more intimacy with Him. And the more intimacy I have with Him, the more compassion He stirs in my heart. You better believe when I walk into a crowded room, I look for someone seated alone and make sure she feels noticed. When I ease the loneliness ache in others, it is beautifully eased in me. Learning to be a noticer of others is a beautiful gift — not just for me but one that’s being developed in me. And one that makes me feel a lot less alone.
