STRUCTURE

photo one:

This photograph of the front of the civic centre was a challenge to get as I had to make sure I got a time of day that it wouldn’t be busy but also a day where the weather was nice but when the sun was out the building was very busy and I wasn't allowed to take, so the only days I was allowed to go to this location which I knew no one else in my college would of captured this was the only modern building here. For this image my settings were F-stop F/4.0 with an ISO of 800 and my shutter speed at 1/1600, I used these settings to give me a steady focused and well detailed, although the weather is the biggest down fall in the photograph but the light isn’t too harsh but is dull, I do like how areas are still highlighted and some are still shadowed which gives the image a 3-dimentual look. If I was able to do this photo shoot again with a older building I would of done it a lot better with better weather conditions, one thing I like about it being rainy is the ground reflects some of the building.

This was one of my favourite photograph as i loved the green against the natural nude colours of the building make the photograph really stand out again the weather was my biggest let down when it came to this project as i had to wait until it was quiet for me to do photographs. my settings for this image were f-stop, f/3.5 an ISO of 320 and a shutter speed of 1/1600 this gave enough light into the camera to make it the perfect exposure not under or over. again i like how the shadows and highlights are in the right place. my favourite thing about this image is the window on the right side of the building as it reflects the threes and the greenery onto the building.

In this photograph i have captured for structure work being done i thought this would be a unique and interesting thing to capture for my structure project, when doing this photograph i found it really challenging as when i went to straighten it, it just didn't look right. my down fall again was weather since the rain was hitting Livingston so trying to get a day when it wasn't busy and nice outside was a real challenge. my settings for this photograph were F/5.0 an ISO of 200 and my shutter speed 1/1600 the reason for these settings to gave me a well exposed image  without it being over or under exposed. one thing i would change if doing this project again be photographing the image a lot more straighter and also to get it photographed of a sunnier day.

This photograph was taken in the inside of the building the way i had to capture this image was different because its slanted one way slanted going down meaning that one window is closer to the ground than the other i kept the image the way it was when i shot it. i love the atmosphere the photograph brings the highlights and shadows are really what gives photograph a 3-D affect. my settings for this image were f/5.0 an ISO of 250 and a shutter speed of 1/400 this gave the image a strong shadow and let enough light to come in to brighten the image perfectly. if i were to do this photograph again id do a different angle.

the last photograph in my structure photoshoot was the stairs inside the building, this was a challenge to get a photograph of as the civic centre is a court so trying to get the stairs photographed without people walking down or up. although i was allowed to photograph when people were leaving so this was one part of the building i found hard to get a quick correct exposure image of. i like the way the stairs go they are well positioned in the building and don have a lot of colour to them except the blue glass where the handrails are which gives the stairs a clean professional look. my setting for this photograph were f/3.5 an ISO of 2000 and shutter speed set to 1/400 this give me a perfectly exposed image without any over highlighted areas, one thing i wish i could change would be the weather to get a warm bright look to the image. if i were to do this again id definitely do a more sunnier day.

Illuminate Evaluation 

This image I captured during my illuminate project, this was a real challenge for me to be able to photograph an image like this in this sort of location the timing was perfect the location was great only problem I had, was the lights from surrounding areas hitting my object. Another issue I came across when doing this project was illuminating the subject without getting light trails bouncing from the car being captured by the camera. I had to be careful when photographing this photo as I had to make sure I didn’t pick up any noise which I kind of did catch, but to get the image I got, I used an ISO of 6400 which is a very high ISO and is the reason why I got noise in my photograph. Other settings I used for this photograph was f-stop of f/32.0 which is a very small aperture I done this to prevent less light getting into the camera to stop the photograph being too over exposed. I think used a shutter speed of 1/8, which is a slow shutter speed I done this again to make sure I had enough time to light my object without making the image over exposed. If I were to do this project again I would probably do it a lot differently I would pick the same location but different area where there is a lot less light that falls onto my subject and so I will be able to use a lower ISO.

Peace Photo 1- This image is of a ornament that would be place at a grave stone, this is a beautiful thing as resting someone to peace and leaving kind words talking about how much they mean to you and you know they are at peace puts the person leaving there in peace too. A lot of people see grave yards as a peaceful place which I like that the words are really kind and makes me feel soothed about laying someone down to rest. I like that on this plack there’s a angel looking down to a flower which is a another peaceful thing in my eyes, flowers are a way to show love and a little happiness. This would be something I would use for my peace project after loosing someone I love but being able to put them to rest makes me happy. If doing this image I would use a blue or green background this would really make the colours/details within the stone stand out. The lighting would be a challenge when it comes to this kind of photograph as you want to get the light into the darker areas without with lighter areas being over exposed but this would be an interesting thing to capture. Photo 2-  This photograph is of a memorial which looks as if it could be a war one. This image I find really interesting for the fact on how it was made for example I like the rustic figures which are in front of a globe which gives the stature a lovely burst of colour this statue has a lovely silver looking frame with a beautiful looking bird made out of the same material as the figures at the front. This is an interesting way to show peace as how it come across as a way for saying thank you to all the fallen soldiers who thought for the world so we fall could be in peace with each other although war still happens theres still hope that peace will happen. If I was to do something like this for my peace project i would use a purple background as i want to use a dark colour but not use black, using this would really bring out the colours/material stand out. The lighting for this image would be easy for me to get as i would have a two light set up one being on the background and the other being aimed from the table up to the statue this would light up the globe perfectly and the rest would be perfectly exposed.  photo 3-  The buddha is a really interesting statue as its one of the most peaceful looking thing to look at, when prying to this god you do it in peace and get everything out asking for forgiveness which is a very peaceful thing to do. in this photograph the buddha is looking off to the side which in this photograph fits in well as it leads the eye to the pipe which most people feel peaceful about having a bit of tobacco which relaxes some people. If i was to do this photograph for my project i would use a blue or purple background this would make the buddha stand out from the background this would also be due to the lighting as well as i will want to highlight the dark areas but not casing shadows onto the background so ill have to use a background light to really make the buddha eye catching. For capturing thing kind of image i want to almost do a low angle shot so i can make the buddha look a bit bigger than it really is. i also like that there isn’t much colour in the image only got the bottom if the pipe colour really stand out as well, they have also used a white background which again makes the objects stand out.  photo 4-  This photograph is also really peaceful to me for the flowers being played on a lovely wooden background and the colours of the flowers really make them stand out. The flowers which have been use look like ones you’d see on an advert for a holiday somewhere peaceful and I also like that there's no harsh light or colours used. If I were to do something like this I would probably use wood as well to give a natural look or use sand to really bring out the flowers with simple colours. I would use one light for this as I want the photograph to have a 3D look so having shadows would achieve this perfectly. Photo 5- For my final image I went for a warm dark image this is because it remind me of Christmas where your opening gifts and having candles burning at night with reds this gives me peace as it remains me that the year is almost over and to enjoy the time you have this really looks peaceful that you can have set up and read a book next to. If I were to do this photograph I would maybe bring more light to the reds to make them stand out more and would use a black background to really focus on the subjects. I feel this would be a successful image because you have the candle light and the flame dancing which is lighting up the rest of the image.

I have two plans for my artisan project:

•One plan is to go to a guitar shop and shoot short clips of a guitar being fixed or made. I will be looking at fine details of the wood, the shape, the strings, and the finer details I will be making sure I get the tools used for these details and what they use to shape the guitar. I will also be looking at different camera angles for example close ups, medium shots and maybe long shots of the surrounding area of where the work is being done, other angles would be low angle/high angle, over the shoulder, panning and tilting. Camera techniques used would be deep focus, shallow depth of field, POV shot, whip panning. These camera angles and techniques would fit well with this plan as getting the shots of the guitar and the making of it.

•My second idea for my artisan project is going into a tailoring dress shop and shoot them putting together one of their dresses this would be a interesting plan if done correctly. This shop is a little shop so I know it will be a challenge to get alot of shots but I know that it would be a great thing to be able to capture. I would be doing alot of different angles in this plan for example getting close ups, over the shoulder, POV shot, mid shot, long shot of the shop, and many more for my camera techniques deep focus, panning/tilting, shallow depth of field and some more. I think this would be a strong artisan project as it would be different than stuff I’m use to doing so I’ll be contacting the shop to talk to them about coming in and doing this plan.

These five artisan clips are very interesting to me as they are visually appealing and also unique in there own ways. 

•The first clip is about shoe making which I found pretty unique on how it has captured the person making the shoe from the very beginning to the end but keeps it interesting with the different camera angles and the speed each of the clips are captured. 

 This really drew me in and made me look into the different way I would of went into this video getting close ups of the threading and the textures of the shoe capturing the detail making the person viewing the video understand .ore about the details and the effort that goes into making the shoes. I like how the video is focused on the person making the shoe but also the equipment used and the layout of the room. 

The angles and techniques used for this video, are panning, close up, medium shots, deep focus, high angle shot, over the shoulder shots and many more this I find very interesting and would like to use these kind of angles and techniques in my artisan video. This has inspired me to go into the idea of looking to do a “fashion” artisan. 

 •For my second artisan research video I looked into Jewellery making more in fact a necklace being made this video caught my eye for being a vibrant and pretty necklace being made within minutes when looking into the video more I noticed that it’s mostly shot using the high angle shot then after the necklace has been made and displayed I noticed it’s a frontal view point but the camera doesn’t move much although it was visually interesting it is let down with the camera techniques and angles. 

 If I was doing something like this I would focus on the gems being used the wires going in them and how the metal bends and the texture of the metal. Although I find this visually interesting I wouldn’t do this type of artisan for my project. 

 •The third video that I selected was of a guitar being made and marked in a very unique way this I found was very interesting to watch and learn how the person making the guitar and putting his own twist on it by carving the details with the small tools. If I was doing something like this if be getting shots of the person shaving the wood down to the right smoothness and size and show the curves within the grain of wood. 

Once the guitar is finished I would do a lead up where I look let the camera follow the stings up the guitar then look at the fine details at the top then zoom out a little showing the neck down to the body capturing as much detail as possible. There wasn’t many camera skills and techniques in this video but I did see, panning, zoom outs, over the shoulder and many more but not a lot. 

•Another one of my research artisan video clips is tailoring which I found pretty remarkable to watch this clip of someone making a bit of clothing marking the areas where the person will add more materials or sewing the fabric together I saw the way they you do certain things such as small creases and folds of the fabric without making any mistakes. The camera techniques and skills are really bring out the details of the clothing, examples of the techniques are close ups, zoom outs, flash clips and front level shots.

WHO AM I?

photograph 1, objects significant to me

This photograph is of my favourite little pets, both of the chinchillas are shared with me and my partner but both mean alot to me due to the love they give back, Sebastian is in the back and Carlos in the front. I’ve always wanted chinchillas since I was young but my mum always said no, I got into a relationship and we have been together for a while now and we both decided to get one each the biggest reason we got two is because they keep eachother company if we aren’t around if you single a chinchilla they can get depressed and pass away which was a interesting fact to learn as we done more research we look for some to buy and then we found these two boys at a few weeks old we loved them at first sight. After a few weeks we got them handed to us and me and my partner have never laughed and played with something so small and teaching them how to live and to make sure they get their sand baths without getting water on them when getting a drink so these pets were really unique and that’s why they are significant to me as they have value and a story behind them. The settings I used for this photograph were a shutter speed of 1/60 with the ISO at 6400 and f/5.6 I used these settings one because chinchillas are fast at running and two I wanted to get as much detail in their fur and faces as possible, I do know that Sebastian isn’t as in focus as Carlos I meant to do that the reason being is Carlos is the more friendly chinchilla he loves attention and to be photographed as Sebastian isn’t he likes his space and will cuddle when he wants to. I used the ISO of 6400 as I wanted to get enough light into the camera without picking up noise and also for getting in the contrasts of the fur of the animals, I feel this was the best setting to use as it gave me a perfect image without any grain or nice picked up.

This image that I’ve captured for my place that means something to me was the kelpies the reason I picked this place is because when I was in high school I done higher photography where I have a project to capture built environment images this was one of my locations ever since I went here I loved how they changed colour at night and how big they were and how they were crafted I just fell in love with them and the look of them during night. This was a popular image for me back in my school days as I didn’t have the best camera but I still pulled off amazing photos with it. So when I saw this project to do a place that I liked a had a few places in my mind but this was by far my favourite it was also the first time my papa had taken me to a place to get photos and to work along side him as he was using his fancy camera. My settings for this image was an shutter speed of 1/13, ISO at 6400 and a f-stop of f/5.6 this helped to pick up a black background and a pop of colour from the kelpies themselves which I think makes them stand out A lot more. I used my ISO setting that i did again to get a lot of light into the camera considering that i was shooting at night the bad thing about this as you normally use a big ISO but this can cause a lot of noise within a picture especially when it comes to night photography but cause of my low f-stop and shutter speed it never picked up any noise.

This image is a self portrait, I’m not the type of person that likes getting their photo taken but who is. I’ve always wanted to become a photographer since I was little and I knew it was never going to be easy I had to have early starts get myself ready with my hair and make up done, this image was captured early morning getting ready for college I was proud of myself as I get up at 6 am to make sure that I get to the places I have to be on time cause that’s what photography is all about I have to make sure my equipment is ready. The reason for this image was stressed I was panicking as I couldn’t find one of my usbs so instead of throwing my house about to find it I thought I’d capture this moment, the reason the shadow was behind me is because something was taunting me the fact I couldn’t find this small USB which had work from school on it but I always back up my things. I captured this image in a way we’re my face and background is out of focus but everything else is the reason behind this is although I couldn’t see it or find it I could tell you what was on it and the fade of my shadow is the bad feeling leaving me. My settings for this photograph was set to a shutter speed of 1/60, ISO 400 and a F-stop of f/4, the reason I used these settings is because of the ISO used brought in some light into the image but not a lot of make it grainy so using the shutter speed that I did let in more light into the camera without making it over exposed.

SEEING THE LIGHT  Photograph 1, Window lit image,  This photograph was captured using overcast light through a window this natural light was hard to work with as with over cast light you don’t want the light to be over exposed in certain areas and not enough light hitting other areas a big part when taking this kind of photograph can work if you angle you put you model this rule goes for any type of lit image but with window light you want to be able to pick up catch lights and have a perfectly balanced light in the whole image, for me to be able to get my catch lights and for light to hit the other side of my model i used a reflector on the right hand side of the model to get less shadowed areas with more detail. My settings for this photograph were set too 1/125 for shutter speed using an ISO of 400 with an F-stop of F/4.5 these settings gave me a well exposed image but it was a little over exposed at the hair where I should of maybe burned to be a little darker but I wanted to use a light haired mode for my photos. photograph 2, frontal light, This photograph was captured using frontal light, which is where my model is angled toward the light but not looking directly towards it. This type of light fit my model well as it really brought out the colours, tones and highlights of the skin one thing I was worried about the glasses reflecting the light back into the camera causing light flare but cause of the settings I used there wasn’t any light flare picked up. The settings I used for this image were an shutter speed 1/250 with an ISO, 100 and f/5.6 these gave a perfect exposure. One thing I would change about this photograph would be, maybe to have the model in a different area where there wasn’t too many objects in the back ground so maybe if I zoomed in more or had more depth of field it would make the image look Alot better. photograph 3, back light, This photograph was captured using the same model on the same day just a different type of light the light source is falling onto the back of my model although they are facing to the side ways this gave a nice sunlight outline of my model which fit the photograph perfectly. One thing I would change about this image would to brighten the side of the model by using a bigger reflector to really get the light to bounce back and light that area up. My settings for this photograph were shutter speed set to 1/200 with an ISO 100 and F5 I needed to get enough light into my camera without making the lit side of my model over exposed and the other side under exposed I think next time doing something like this I would dodge and burn areas to get a detailed photograph. photograph 4, side light This photograph was captured using side light and a reflector, the light was coming from the top of a building falling lightly onto my model I used the reflector to highlight the right hand side of my model and to reflect light into his eyes. This was a very interesting photograph to capture not only asking a homeless person to model for me but to see emotion within his face and the sadness that he faces day to day I was surprised when he gave me permission to use him as my model and I was happy with the outcome of the image as well. One thing I done when editing this image was to enhance his eyes to bring more life into the image I felt this really brought the photograph out more and really eye catching when it came to looking in the eyes of the model. My settings for this image was set to a shutter speed of 1/160 with an ISO set to 100 and and my f-stop being f3.2 this perfectly exposed my image and helped me to get the photograph I wanted to capture I wouldn't change anything about this photo not even the graffiti on the back cause I feel it brings some character to the photo.

CLEAN WHITE

This image is one of my favourite photographs that I’ve taken, this photo was captured in the studio with a white backdrop scoop, three studio lights and two polyboards, this set up was great for this image as there was two lights on the back drop to really make the white background stand out and break off from the white in my models shirt. The other studio light was on the left side of the model so I could get the shadows in the image but not Alot to still be able to pick up the details of the right side of the face I did use the dodge tool to highlight the bottom of the right eye but other than that the other thing I done was making the image black and white. I put the two polyboards Infront of the two background lights the black side of the polyboard pointing towards the light and the white side pointing to the model this helped the light to only bounce to the background and not to travel to the model. Another thing I donne when editing this photo was to enhance the eyes by adding contrast and brightening them to really make the catch light stand out and eye catching to the person viewing the image. My settings when doing this photograph were an shutter speed of 1/125 with my ISO set to 100 and an f-stop of f10 this gave me a perfect exposure for the image I wanted to capture there isn’t anything I would change in this image and would love to be able to do this kind of thing again.

Shére project

1. Great depth of field

This photograph was taken with a great depth of field this is when the background is more in focus than the foreground giving an interesting look to an image this photograph was captured using these settings, shutter speed of 1/2500, ISO at 400 and my f-stop being f/4 these settings were perfect when it come to doing this image as it was perfectly exposed and was a great example for freeze motion and the great depth of field.

2. Shallow depth of field

This is when the foreground is in focus and the background isn’t this photograph is a perfect example of this, my camera was set to these settings, shutter speed of 1/500 with an ISO at 400 and my f-stop being f/6.3. Using this set up helped me to achieve the goal of getting a perfectly exposed image and also having the f-stop where it was and my focus on the shére helped me get the shallow depth of field affect which I think for this photograph well.

3. Freeze motion

This image was captured using a fast shutter speed of 1/3200 an ISO of 400 and an f-stop of f/4 these settings helped me freeze the ball within mid air to get a floating affect when in fact the object was still moving but the fast shutter speed captured it as if it was just handing there. This is a very interesting thing to be able to capture as you need to be able to focus on the object and pinpoint where it will end up as the ball is coming into frame using continuous shutter helps you get different stages of the balls movement and freeze motion this was my strongest image of the ball being in focus and it having a floating look which I thought would fit in with my freeze motion brief.

4. Enhanced movement

This image was taken when someone threw a ball from a high level down to my level which when capturing I focused on the wall behind and when the ball was coming down I used my continuous shutter to be able to the different speeds/movements of the ball. The settings I used for this kind of photograph were f-stop F/8, the ISO set to 200 and my shutter speed being 1/250 these settings gave me the perfect shot that I needed for my brief showing the enhanced movement of something falling from a higher hight which I found interesting as you can’t see the definition of the object shows how quickly it’s going and the camera isn’t focused on it.

5. Panning

This kind of photograph isn’t my strongest point and one I do struggle with but I gave it a try although I do want to get more practice in for this skill of photographing. My camera settings used for this image were shutter speed of 1/80 an ISO of  640 and my f-stop being set to f/9 . These settings gave me a well exposed image and a small shallow depth of field making the background blurred and cause I was panning the camera with the object it turned out really well.
